Het Northsea Jazzfestival 2009 vond dit jaar plaats van 10 tot 12 juli 2009 in Ahoy Rotterdam. Honderden concerten, honderden artiesten en tienduizenden bezoekers uit alle delen van de wereld. Op vrijdag 10 juli 2009, de dag dat ik het festival bezocht, waren er zo’n 18.000 bezoekers en dat voelde comfortabel – geen “dichtedeur” concerten – geen overvolle wandelgangen; op zaterdag en zondag was het aanmerkelijk drukker: zo’n 25000 mensen per dag en het festival was dan ook uitverkocht.

Eerlijk gezegd …….. het concert van Hank Jones, dat gepland stond op het Northsea Jazzfestival, was voor mij één van de belangrijkste redenen om dit jaar voor de vrijdag te kiezen. Afgelopen jaar zou Hank zijn 90ste verjaardag vieren op het Northsea in een concert met Roberta Gambarini en Roy Hargrove, maar moest toen het concert aflassen vanwege gezondheidsproblemen. Dit jaar was hij er gelukkig wel ……… zonder Roberta en Roy, maar met zijn trio waarin Georg Mraz en Willie Jones III.

Hank Jones werd geboren in Vicksburg, Mississippi op de laatste dag van juli 1918 als de oudste van een stel muzikale broers: Thad en Elvin. Thad Jones werd bekend als trompettist en bandleider van o.a. de Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra ( haar opvolger stond, wat een toeval, als Vanguard Jazz Orchestra gepland in het voorafgaande concert in diezelfde Hudsonzaal) en Elvin Jones kreeg bekendheid als slagwerker bij o.a John Coltrane. Ik heb hem, vlak voor zijn overlijden, mogen zien optreden met zijn Jazz Machine, op ditzelfde Northsea Jazzfestival, in juli 2002 nog in Den Haag.

Hank Jones groeide op in een muzikale familie in het stadje Pontiac in Michigan, hoewel zijn vader, die streng religieus was, jazz absoluut niet zag zitten – zeker niet op zondag: He thought Jazz was a bad influence because back then it was associated with places of ill repute and people of questionable backgrounds ( = Hij zag Jazz absoluut niet zitten, aangezien het toendertijd werd geassocieerd met plaatsen van verderf, bevolkt door mensen met een twijfelachtige reputatie.), citeert Don Quellette Hank in het begeleidende boekje bij de CD For My Father. And he was right. I was always running into people like that, but I was also able to disassociate myself from that part of the scene ( = en hij had gelijk. Ik kwam in contact met dat soort mensen, maar het lukte me om er niet bij betrokken te raken). Hij ging als professional spelen, op het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog bij Hot Lips Page, waarmee hij in november 1944 op een serie Continentals zijn platendebuut maakte. Zijn eerste opnamen onder eigen naam maakte hij voor Clef in 1947. In de jazzscene van New York speelde hij met musici Coleman Hawkins, Howard McGhee, Andy Kirk en Billy Eckstine. En hij speelde in de beroemde Jazz at the Philharmonic concerten, georganiseerd door Norman Granz. In april 1952 speelde hij met de JATP in het Kurhaus in Scheveningen en een paar dagen later in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Sinds de jaren vijftig speelde Hank mee op een ontelbaar aantal opnamen en hij werd een geliefd begeleider voor jazz en andere populaire muziek. Eén van zijn laatste platen maakte hij met Roberta Gambarini, getiteld You Are There; de muziek die vorige jaar op het Northsea centraal had moeten staan.

Hank Jones had deze keer zijn trio meegebracht naar Rotterdam met George Mraz op bas en Willie Jones III op slagwerk. Georg Mraz, de in Tsjechië geboren bassist, begon zijn carrière in de jaren zestig bij het S & H Quartet ( genoemd naar Spejbl en Hurvínek, die de club exploiteerden, waar ze vaak optraden) en is, sinds die tijd, in heel wat ritmesecties op platen terug te vinden. Het was schitterend om hem eens in een kleine bezetting bezig te kunnen zien. Willie Jones III, jarenlang slagwerker bij Roy Hargrove, is een welbekende gast in de Porgy en Bess jazzclub in Terneuzen; de laatste keer dat ik hem zag speelde hij bij Roberta Gambarini in maart 2009. De Romeinse III achter zijn naam is om zich te onderscheiden van twee illustere voorgangers, beide jazzmuzikant en Willie Jones geheten.

De meeste nummers die het trio speelde, waren standards uit het American songbook, zoals dat heet; nummers als Blue Minor, Lady Luck, Recorda-me, Lament, Stella By Starlight en Round Midnight. Het werd een memorabel concert, van een 91-jarige gigant op de toetsen, die nog steeds moeiteloos een volgepakte zaal muisstil weet te krijgen; wat jammer dan, dat het irritante gerampetamp vanuit andere zalen doordringt tijdens de stille momenten.

Ik wees in een eerdere blog al op het feit, van de strenge beveiligingsvoorschriften en het feit dat “gewone mensen”geen digitale camera “met afneembare lens” mee naar binnen mochten nemen. Jacques Los, redacteur van de jazzblog Draai Om Je Oren zag zich zelfs genoodzaakt het festival helemaal te boycotten. Gelukkig was ik vroeg in de Hudsonzaal aanwezig en maakte ik de soundcheck mee van het drietal. Het is goed te weten, dat ik een T-shirt aan had, met daarop de hoes van de LP “Something Else”; de plaat, die 50-jaar geleden door Cannonball Adderley met zijn kwintet werd opgenomen met o.a. Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones en Art Blakey. Toen Hank Jones na de soundcheck het podium verliet ontdekte hij mijn T-shirt en stak zijn duim omhoog. Mijn dag kon niet meer stuk………..

The North Sea Jazz Festival 2009 was scheduled on the 10th up to the 12th of July 2009 at Ahoy in Rotterdam. hundreds of concerts - hundreds of artists and ten-thousands of visitors from all parts of the world joined the festival. Friday, the 10th of July 2009, when I visited the festival, 18,000 visitors made it feel comfortable – on Saturday and Sunday, with almost 25,000 visitors each night, the venue was jam-packed. Today the last review of the North Sea Jazz Festival with the concert by Hank Jones Trio. To be honest ……… Hank Jones’s planned concert was one of the main reasons to decide for a Friday visit to the festival. Last year he would have celebrated his 90th birthday with Roberta Gambarini and Roy Hargrove, but he had to cancel that concert due to health problems. This year he was scheduled with his trio featuring Georg Mraz and Willie Jones III.

Hank Jones was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on the last day of July 1918 as the eldest one with two musical brothers, Thad and Elvin. Thad Jones became famous a trumpeter and band leader of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra ( its successors, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra were playing the previous concert at the Hudson) and Elvin Jones became known as a skilled drummer in recordings and performances with great names as John Coltrane. I heard him in a concert with his Jazz Machine, at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, July 2002.

Hank Jones raised into a musical family in Pontiac, Michigan, although his father, who was deeply religious, didn’t like him to play Jazz, especially on Sunday: ……. He thought Jazz was a bad influence because back then it was associated with places of ill repute and people of questionable backgrounds: Don Quellette quotes Hank in the liner notes of For My Father. And he was right. I was always running into people like that, but I was also able to disassociate myself from that part of the scene. He started to play professionally after the Second World War with Hot Lips Page. He is to be heard as pianist in the Hot Lips Page Septet on a Continental recording session ( November 1944). In the New York Jazz scene he learned other jazz musicians and performed with them: Coleman Hawkins, Howard McGhee, Andy Kirk and Billy Eckstine. And he became part of the famous Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, organized by Norman Granz. He made the first recordings under his own name in 1947 for Clef. In April 1952 he played with the JATP at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen ( The Hague) and a few days later at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Since the 1950s up to now, Hank Jones played in innumerable recording session and became a sought after accompanist for both jazz as non-jazz musicians. One of his latest recordings is an album with Roberta Gambarini, titled You Are There; the music of that album should have been spotlighted in last year canceled concert at the North Sea festival.

Hank Jones brought his trio to Rotterdam with George Mraz on bass and Willie Jones III on drums. Georg Mraz, the Czech-born bass player, who started his career in the 1960s in the S & H Quartet ( named after Spejbl and Hurvínek, who runned the club they played) and is to be found in the rhythm section of numerous jazz (hard)bop albums. Great to hear him playing in this small setting. Willie Jones III, drummer in Roy Hargroves groups for years, is a well known guest at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen (south west part of The Netherlands) and the last time I heard him was in the Roberta Gambarini concert March 2009. Being the third Willie-Jones-in-jazz he uses the Roman III to indicate that.

Most of the tunes played by the trio were standards like Blue Minor, Lady Luck, Recorda-me, Lament, Stella By Starlight and Round Midnight. It was great to learn how these great musicians could get the audience as still as a mouse – only the irritating sounds from the near by concerts were disturbing.

I pointed in a previous blog to the severe security measures and the fact that the ordinary visitor were not allowed to bring in a professional camera. Jacques Los, blogger of the (Dutch) Draai Om Je Oren blog even had to boycot the festival. Well, to make some pictures I was early in the Hudson, when the men were doing some sound checks. You should know that I wore a T-shirt with the cover of the Cannonball Adderley “Something Else” cover, the 50 years old Cannonball Adderley recording, on which Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey play as side men. When Hank Jones returned back stage he saw my shirt and he gave thumbs up – it made my day

Tijdens het laatste weekend van maart vond een mini Jazzfestival plaats, getiteld Summertime, zomertijd, georganiseerd door de altijd actieve vrijwilligers van de Huiskamer van de Jazz, Porgy en Bess in de Noordstraat in Terneuzen. Op zondagmiddag trad de Italiaans-Amerikaanse zangeres Roberta Gambarini op met haar kwartet en, dankzij een toevallige samenloop van omstandigheden ( een afgelast concert) kon ook Roy Hargrove met zijn kwintet aanwezig zijn; genoeg elementen dus voor een meer dan geslaagd muzikaal weekend in Porgy en Bess.

Op zaterdagavond trad Roy Hargrove op met zijn kwintet, bestaande uit de oudgedienden Justin Robinson op altsax en Montez Coleman op slagwerk en de nieuwkomers Joel Holmes aan de piano en Ameen Saleem op bas. Zelf kon ik die avond er niet bij zijn, maar ik hoorde van hen die wel zo gelukkig geweest waren, dat het kwintet, samen met muzikanten van Roberta Gambarini ( Willie Jones III en Cyrus Chestnut), er een waar feest van hadden gemaakt. Op zondagmiddag was het de beurt aan Roberta Gambarini en haar kwartet. De in Italië geboren zangeres, die nu al meer dan tien jaar in New York woont speelde al vaker in Porgy en Bess. Ik herinner me haar in een concert in november 2003 met de veteraan op bas Jimmy Woode gehoord te hebben; de inmiddels overleden bassist die met Duke Ellington, Count Basie en Billie Holiday opgetreden heeft. In oktober 2007 zag ik haar weer met haar kwartet, nu met pianist Kirk Ligtsey. Deze keer had ze weer gekozen voor ervaren musici, Cyrus Chestnut aan de piano, Neil Swainson op bas en Willie Jones III op het slagwerk.

Cyrus Chestnut begon piano te spelen als kleuter thuis in Baltimore en al zesjarige speelde hij al tijdens een kerkdienst. Op zijn negende jaar kocht hij van zijn spaargeld zijn eerste LP, namelijk "Monk's Greatest Hits", met daarop titels als Epistrophy, Ruby My Dear en Crepuscule With Nellie. Mijn eerste kennismaking met de muziek van Cyrus Chestnut was in de film Kansas City waar hij een door Count Basie-geïnspireerde pianist speelde in een schitterende boogiebattle, een duet op twee upright piano's met Geri Allen. Tien jaar geleden, april 1999, trad hij op in Porgy en Bess met Benny Golson, in een concert dat ik nooit zal vergeten.

Willie Jones III speelde vele jaren bij Roy Hargrove en maakte deel uit van zijn werk-kwintet. In de RH Factor imponeerde hij door samen met Jason Thomas aan synchroon drummen te doen. Indrukwekkend. In de jaren negentig speelde hij bij Arturo Sandoval en Horace Silver. Hij speelde vanaf de jaren negentig bij Roy Hargrove en een paar jaar geleden werd hij gevraagd als drummer te komen spelen in een all-star groep rond Herbie Hancock. Het Romeinse cijfer III achter zijn naam is om hem te onderscheiden van twee andere jazzmuzikanten met dezelfde naam, namelijk de uit Chicago afkomstige pianist Willie Jones en slagwerker Willie Jones jr., die bij Thelonious Monk speelde. Al deze heren zijn geen familie van elkaar. Zelf hoorde ik Willie Jones III voor het eerst met het Roy Hargrove Quintet in januari 1999, waarbij Larry Willis piano speelde. Zelf kiest Willie Jones III meer voor een rol op de achtergrond; hij lijkt zelfs wat aan de verlegen kant. Groot was de hilariteit bij een deel van het publiek, die het opmerkte, toen hij zondag in de tweede set van het podium liep in de veronderstelling dat het concert afgelopen was. Hij was er zelf beduusd van, maar kon er gelukkig zelf ook de grap van in zien.

Neil Swainson was nieuw voor mij. Ik had hem nooit eerder horen spelen, maar wist van zijn reputatie als vaste bassist van George Shearing in de jaren negentig. Hij ontpopte zich tijdens het concert als een stille, maar gedegen bassist op de achtergrond, die op voortreffelijke wijze Roberta begeleidde.

Eigenlijk was deze tournee bedoeld om het nieuwe album van Roberta Gambarini, getiteld So In Love, te promoten, maar dat komt door onvoorziene omstandigheden pas in mei uit. In de eerste set werden er verschillende nummers van het nieuwe album gespeeld zoals de Johnny Griffin' compositie The JAMF's Are Coming, That Old Back Magic, Get Out Of Town en Estate, een nummer ooit beroemd gemaakt door Joao Gilberto. Tijdens deze eerste set bewezen de muzikanten dat ze op ervaren wijze de aangeboden nummers uit het American song book repertoire professioneel konden spelen; nummers als No More Blues, You Don't Know What Love Is en Lover Come Back To Me en een schitterende uitvoering van Bess You Is My Woman Now uit de Porgy and Bess Suite van Gershwin. De tweede set begon met I Fall In Love Too Easily en het Dave Brubeck nummer ( nee, Cyrus, niet Take Five !!) In Your Own Sweet Way. Verder werd het nummer Lush Life vertolkt, geschreven door Billy Strayhorn en Roberta en haar mannen verzorgden een perfecte uitvoering. Roy Hargrove (Porgy en Bess - maart 2009) (foto: Hans Koert)

Toch miste er wat in het concert tot dan toe – dat werd pas duidelijk met het nummer On The Sunny Side of the Street, dat het concert een onverwachte wending gaf doordat Roy Hargrove kwam meespelen. Hierdoor werd het spel losser en kregen de muzikanten zelf meer plezier op het podium en dat merkte je in hun spel. Montez Coleman nam tijdens één nummer het drumstel over van Willie Jones en Joel Holmes nam de plaats van Cyrus tijdelijk in achter de toetsen.

Het geheel kreeg het karakter van een jamsessie, waar weinig vaststond en veel kon. Na On The Sunny Side of the Street volgde het nummer Rhythm-a-Ning van Thelonious Monk, het nummer Never Let Me Go en een schitterende uitvoering van If You Could See Me Now, dat ook op de nieuwe CD staat, waarin Roy Hargrove en James Moody gastrollen vervullen. Met het nummer Body and Soul werd het concert afgesloten, niet nadat iedere muzikant nog eens even alles uit de kast had gehaald, inclusief een hilarisch scatduet van Roberta en Roy.

Een wervelend slot van een toch vrij mat begonnen concert. Vooral in de tweede helft van de tweede set bleek maar weer eens wat een geweldig trompettist, zanger ( Watch out, watch out riep Roy, toen Roberta hem met om zijn zangkunst prees) en ballad-vertolker op de bugel hij is. Maar bovenal is Roy een sfeermaker, die zich in Porgy en Bess volledig thuis voelt, wiens aanwezigheid, op het podium, de vonken doet overslaan naar zowel de musici als het publiek. Bedankt daarvoor Roy; zo hoort Jazz te klinken.

Dit mini Jazzfestival "Summertime" (de naam was niet toevallig gekozen omdat in dit weekend de zomertijd begon) was het laatste jazzconcert in Porgy en Bess van dit seizoen. Een seizoen met weer louter hoogtepunten, namelijk Rik Mol, Robin Verheyen, Jeff Hamilton en Tamir Hendelman; het Rein De Graaff Trio met Pete Christlieb en Ferdinand Povel, het Pierre Courbois Vijfkwarts Sextet, Benjamin Herman en Ernst Glerum en een swingend nieuwjaarsconcert met Rony Verbiest en de Cauter familie.

In the last weekend of March 2009, a Mini Jazz Festival, titled Summertime, to label this opportunity, was organized at the cozy Huiskamer Van De jazz, the Living Room of Jazz in the Noordstraat in Terneuzen. On Sunday the Italian-American vocalist Roberta Gambarini was scheduled with her quartet and, thanks to a lucky coincidence, also Roy Hargrove could be present with his quintet during the weekend. On Saturday Roy Hargrove brought his new Quintet to Terneuzen, featuring Justin Robinson on alto saxophone and Montez Coleman on drums as some old hands and Joel Holmes at the piano and Ameen Saleem on bass; both newcomers in the band. Although I couldn't be at this concert I learned that Roy and his men had a party on stage, together with some musicians in the house from the Gambarini Quartet, Willy Jones III and Cyrus Chestnut. On Sunday afternoon Roberta Gambarini was scheduled for a concert with her quartet. Roberta Gambarini, the Italian born vocalist, has been performing in Porgy en Bess several times before. I remember her on a concert November 2003 with the late Jimmy Woode, the veteran bass player and in October 2007 with piano player Kirk Lightsey.
This time she brought some great musicians, like Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Neil Swainson on the bass and Willie Jones III at the drums.

Cyrus Chestnut started as a piano player in his hometown Baltimore and his first concert ( during a service in a church) was when he was six years old; when he was nine years old he got inspired by the Thelonious Monk album "Monk's Greatest Hits", with tunes like Epistrophy, Ruby My Dear and Crepuscule With Nellie. My first introduction to Cyrus was in the film Kansas City where he played some great tunes as a Count Basie-inspired pianist in a great piano boogie duet on two pianos with Geri Allen. Willie Jones III played with Roy Hargrove for a very long time and was his regular drummer man for years. In the RH Factor he impressed with Jason Thomas in synchronic drumming. In the 1990s he played in the bands of Arturo Sandoval and Horace Silver. He played with Roy Hargrove since the 1990s and a few years ago he was the drummer man in an all-star group around Herbie Hancock. The Roman number three ( III ) behind his name wants to distinguish him from Chicagoan piano player Willie Jones and drummer Willie Jones jr., who played with Monk himself; all three are no relatives at all. I heard Willie Jones III for the very first time with Roy Hargrove's Quintet, January 1999 ( featuring Larry Willis). On stage he always seems to be a bit shy; keeping himself in the background. Half way the second set during this Roberta Gambarini concert in Porgy en Bess he had part of the audience laughing, unintended, as he wanted to leave the stage before the concert had finished; it embarrassed him! Neil Swainson was a new face for me, although I knew that he performed with George Shearing for years ( late 1980s up to the late 1990s). I learned during the concert that he is a very skilled bass player doing a good job in accompanying Roberta Gambarini.

In fact this concert tour along European and Japanese venues, was scheduled as a promotion tour for her new album So In Love, which will be released in May 2009. In the first set she sung several tracks from this new album, like the Johnny Griffin' composition The JAMF's Are Coming, That Old Back Magic, Get Out of Town and Estate, a tune made famous by Joao Gilberto. In this first set the four musicians showed that they are a group of skilled musicians in playing ballads from the American song book repertoire; in tunes like No More Blues, You Don't Know What Love Is and Lover Come Back To Me and a great performance by Roberta singing from the Gershwin Porgy and Bess Opera Musical Suite Bess You Is My Woman Now. With the tune On The Sunny Side of the Street the concert took an unexpected turn as Roy Hargrove joined the quartet. Montez Coleman stood in for Willie Jones and Joel Holmes took Cyrus's chair behind the keys for one tune.

A great jam session on stage with tunes like the Thelonious Monk standard Rhythm-a-Ning, the tune Never Let Me Go and a great performance of If You Could See Me Now from Roberta's new album, on which James Moody and Roy Hargrove are to be heard as guest musicians.
The well known tune, Body and Soul , became the final number of the show, in which all members of the quartet ( including Roy) could show what they are made for.

This concert, specially the second part, learned what a great jazz musician Roy Hargrove is, a great soloist on trumpet and maybe even greater on his flugelhorn in ballads and he sings too ( ....... watch out watch out !), but above all things he can get the mood for the show - he can transform each performance to a little party for both the musician on stage as the people in the audience. Thanks Roy for that !! That’s where Jazz is made for!

This Mini Jazz Festival "Summertime" (what's in a name - This weekend we went over to summer time in this part of the world) was the last activity for this winter concert season: Great concerts were organized in Porgy en Bess withRik Mol, Robin Verheyen, Jeff Hamilton and Tamir Hendelman; the Rein De Graaff Trio with Pete Christlieb en Ferdinand Povel, The Pierre Courbois Vijfkwarts Sextet, Benjamin Herman and Ernst Glerum and a great New Years concert with Rony Verbiest with the Cauter family.
