Northsea Jazz Festival 2013:  Een begrip voor tienduizenden jazzliefhebbers uit de hele wereld .... De 38ste editie al weer. Elk jaar weer een (lang) weekend om naar uit te kijken. Voor Keep (it) Swinging werd het dit jaar de zaterdag - Zo'n festivaldag leest  als een hoofdstuk uit een rijke jazzgeschiedenis met optredens van Kenny Barron, George Mraz en Lewis Nash -
Willie Jones III met Eddie Henderson en Justin Robinson en Rein de Graaff met Peter King en Alan Skidmore.  Als toetje een spetterend optreden van Michel Camilo en Tomatito. Mijn Northsea
2013!

Earlier this month there was a homage to violinist Hernán Oliva in Argentina celebrating the Centennial of his birth. Members of the string swing conjunto Hot Club de Boedo lead by guitarist Waldo Fonseca took part in the arranged live performance.

Nat Adderley  ....... de broer van ...... Gedoemd om zijn leven lang letterlijk en figurlijk in de schaduw te staan van zijn grotere broer Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Jarenlang speelden ze samen tot het overlijden van Cannonball in 1975, waarna hij alleen verder moest ......  er voor zorgend dat zijn altsaxofonist net zo kon spelen als zijn grote broer ........ Timeless bracht het Nat Adderley Quintet met Vincent Herring op altsax uit 1992 opnieuw uit in haar serie Timeless Jazz Legacy.

To me, it's about touching people, making a difference .... If they hear something that makes them smile, that's what it's all about. Healing comes through that. Yoron Israel, US drummer, recently released a jazz album entitled Visions, dedicated to the music of Rhythm and Blues star Stevie Wonder ... whose compositions are jazz compositions .... Yoron states. A great album of a rather unknown sideman in this part of the world, which needs further recognition in Europe .....  but a sought after percussionist overseas.

The 2011 North Sea Jazz Festival , one of the most extensive covered jazz festivals of the world, was scheduled from Friday the 8th up to Sunday the 10th of July, 2011 at the Ahoy building in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). I joined the festival on Sunday the 10th of July and I love to share with you two great concerts, both scheduled at the Madeira hall: The Peace Hotel Jazz Band and the concert by piano legend Barry Harris. Today the Peace Hotel Jazz Band.

The Old Jazz Band Peace Hotel as it is named officially, better known as the Peace Hotel Jazz Band was added only a few weeks ago to the festival schedules. This Shanghai based orchestra was labelled by the festival as "de oudste (jazz)band" ter wereld (= The oldest (jazz) band of the world). Well, I leave that to them, as I know that our Dutch (Original) Victoria Band from Breda claims to be the eldest one, founded in September 1924, with trumpet player Willy Smith as its first director, as the house band of a Breda high school. Well, never mind, dear bought and far fetched are dainty for ladies, the saying goes. The Peace Hotel Jazz Band is, for 30 years, the house band of the recently restored to the nines Shanghai Peace Hotel, an almost colonial art-deco hotel.
At the Madeira I sat next to a man who had heard the band in concert in 1999 while for business in Shanghai and he loved to hear them in concert again.
The band had six members ( and a vocalist) and featured at the Madeira stage Jibin Sun on saxophones, Honglin Gao on tenor saxophone, Mengqiang Lu on trumpet, Jingyu Zhang at the piano, Mingkang Li on bass and Zhengzhen Bao on drums. They had invited a Chinese woman vocalist, whose name I missed ( something like Yesnen Cheng) who lowered the average age of the men on stage with more then dozen years I guess.

These men were invited to visit the prestigious Rotterdam jazz festival as part of a documentary that will be made. A film crew recorded the concert, but also the trip of the old boys and the story of their lives. The eldest of the orchestra, trumpet player and band leader Mengqiang Lu was born in 1921, which learns that they lived in China during the Japanese oppression at World War II and the Chinese Revolution by Mao Zedong. It might be, that the documentary makers have had the successful 1998 documentary Buena Vista Social Club by Wim Wenders in mind, but any comparison won't hold. The Cuban veterans of the Buena Vista Social Club played their music in a long Cuban musiccal tradition - these six men of the Peace Hotel Jazz Band are just unique, even in China, playing a kind of western music the hotel manager may have heard years ago in prestigious hotels elsewhere in the (western) world. To be clear - they didn't play jazz music, nor traditional jazz as heard during the 1920s and 1930s in the US and Europe. Maybe you could say that they tried to play jazz-related music - a kind of western entertainment music you could here in hotel lobbies and Tea-dansants during the 1930s. Music on the edge of jazz ...... For a short moment I had to think about a May 1981 concert at the Turfschip in Breda by the Neptune Band of Zimbabwe, that played a kind of authentic unspoiled "New O Orleans style" music and surprised and caused confusion the audience .............

The concert by the six Chinese musicians could be split in two parts. Half way the concert, which was scheduled for half an hour, but lasted almost an hour (!), the young Chinese guest vocalist joined the band, which gave the band's music a boost ....... During the first half they seemed to be a bit nervous and insecure - obvious due to the culture shock, as their only concerts outside their safe band stand at the Peace Hotel seem to have been a few years ago at the Hua Ting Hotel, a few block away, for some weeks as the Peace Hotel was restored. The music they played were stock arrangements and although they played some unspecified tunes I could recognize standards like Perdido, Glenn Miller's In The Mood, Besame Mucho and As Time Goes By. Due to nerves, I guess, the audience was regaled with some unexpected blue notes and even a piano solo Cecil Taylor, who played on the same piano in the same hall two years ago, would have liked, but the men on stage had the time of their lives ........... They really enjoyed the applause of the audience, as if they were not used to play for so much people that listened intently and forgave their untuned notes now and then .........The Chinese vocalist was introduced after half a dozen tunes as a guest vocalist and she forced the band in the role of the accompanist, a part that might have been written better for the band. Fact was that she had a pretty voice. She sung four traditional songs from the 1930s and 1940s like Give Me A Kiss, Flowers in the Night and Fly Me to The Moon. The Peace Hotel Jazz Band finished their world debut outside the Shanghai Hotel lobby with a special surprise for the Dutch audience, as our Chinese vocalist announced, and .......... it was. I've never heard (Als de Lente komt dan stuur ik jou) Tulpen Uit Amsterdam( = Tulips from Amsterdam), or Tulpen Uit Rotterdam as the announcer mangled the title, played with so much enthusiasm as a thank-you to the audience that had listened so attentive and full of sympathy. Be sure, the festival surprised us with this great authentic band.
For me it was a great start of (my) North Sea Jazz Festival Sunday - I had the time of my live too - with tears in my eyes............
We are so lucky that visitors of the Peace Hotel loved to share its hotel band on film. Love to show you the orchestra at the Shanghai bandstand some years ago, with the same opening tune as in Rotterdam 2011.

The North Sea Jazz Festival of Rotterdam, was scheduled from the 8th up to the 10th of July 2011. Jazz fans complain that they hardly can find the music they love to hear between all those scheduled rap, soul and rock concerts ... The festival loves to surprise, they say, and on its last day, Sunday the 10th, they did with the Chinese Peace Hotel Jazz Band from Shanghai; six aged musicians, who played their dated music, had the time of their lives. The Peace Hotel Jazz Band debuteert op Northsea Jazzfestival (Nederlands) The Shanghai Peace Hotel Jazz Band debutes at North Sea Jazz Festival 2011

Het Northsea Jazzfestival editie 2011, het grootste overdekte jazzfestival ter wereld, heb ik horen verluiden, zit er weer op. Het stond gepland van vrijdag 8 tot en met zondag 10 juli 2011 in het Ahoy-complex in Rotterdam. Dit jaar was ik er op zondag 10 juli en over twee bijzondere concerten, toevallig beide in de Madeira, wil ik graag in de Keep Swinging blog aandacht besteden: het concert van de Peace Hotel Jazz Band en dat van pianolegende Barry Harris. Vandaag aandacht voor The Peace Hotel Jazz Band.

Het concert van de Peace Hotel Jazz Band, eigenlijk voluit The Old Jazz Band Peace Hotel (er schijnt ook een Young .... te bestaan ) was nog maar een aantal weken geleden aangekondigd. Dit uit Shanghai (China) afkomstige orkest werd door de festivalorganisatie bestempeld als "de oudste (jazz)band" ter wereld. Deze vaststelling komt van de Northsea-organisatie, want ik heb daar zo mijn twijfels over. Volgens mij claimt de Bredase Original Victoria Band oudere rechten, want deze (Original) Victoria Band werd opgericht in september 1924, met trompettist Willy Smith als haar eerste leider, als huisorkest van een scholierenvereniging van het plaatselijk Gymnasium. Maar goed, niet zo belangrijk, immers, wat je van ver haalt is lekker, zegt het spreekwoord. De Peace Hotel Jazz Band is al dertig jaar het huisorkest van het onlangs grondig opgeknapte Peace Hotel in Shanghai, een soort van oud koloniaal art-deco hotel, waar vaak westerse toeristen ondergebracht worden.
In de Madeira zat ik naast iemand die de band in 1999 heeft horen spelen toen hij daar op zakenreis was - begrijpelijk dat hij deze bijzondere groep opnieuw wilde meemaken tijdens een concert.

De band bestaat uit zes (bejaarde) mannen en een zangeres. Op het Madeirapodium bestond het orkest uit Jibin Sun op saxen, Honglin Gao op tenorsax, Mengqiang Lu op trompet, Jingyu Zhang aan de piano, Mingkang Li op bas en Zhengzhen Bao op slagwerk. Ze haden een Chinese zangeres uitgenodigd, waarvan me de juiste naam niet bijgebleven is ( het klonk als Yesnen Cheng), die, alleen al door haar aanwezigheid, meteen de gemiddelde leeftijd van de band substantieel naar beneden wist te brengen. De mannen waren uitgenodigd om op te treden op het prestigieuze Rotterdamse Northsea Jazzfestival als
onderdeel van een documentaire. Een filmploeg legde het concert vast, maar ook de reis erheen en de verhalen van hun levens ........ De nestor van de band, trompettist en leider van de band Mengqiang Lu schijnt de oudste te zijn van de groep en is in 1921 geboren, al las ik ergens anders dat de slagwerker de oudste was ........ doet er niet zoveel toe - de gemidddelde leeftijd van de bandleden ligt boven de 75; feit is dat ze alle de Japanse overheersing gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de Culturele Revolutie van Mao Zedong aan den lijve meegemaakt hebben - mooie gesprekstof voor de documentaire.
Misschien dat de documentairemaker geïnspireerd is door de bekende succesvolle documentaire uit 1998 van filmmaker Wim Wenders, getiteld Buena Vista Social Club, maar elke vergelijking tussen de Super-Abuels uit Cuba en deze bejaarde Chinezen gaat mank. De Cubanen immers zijn veteranen in een lange Cubaanse muziektraditie, terwijl de mannen van de het Peace Hotel een soort "westerse dansmuziek" spelen op Chinese wijze bereid, waarvan het hotelmanagement waarschijnlijk decennia geleden bedacht heeft, dat westerse toeristen daar op zitten te wachten. Om het even duidelijk te stellen - de Peace Hotel Jazz Band speelde geen noot jazz noch jazzmuziek, zoals die in de jaren twintig en dertig in Europa en Amerika moet hebben geklonken. Misschien is de term jazzgerelateerde dansmuziek hier beter op zijn plek, maar dan wel op Chinese wijze bereid - muziek op de grens van jazz en geen jazz. (Wat dat betreft paste het naadloos in het concept van het festival). Heel even moest ik tijdens het concert denken aan dat historische concert in november 1984 in het Turfschip in Breda van The Neptune Band of Zimbabwe, het voormalige Rhodesië, gevormd rond de Argentijnse tandarts Papa Cesar Fratantoni.............. deze groep bracht toendertijd op het Bredase Oude Stijl Jazzfestival verwarring en verbijstering vanwege hun pure onbedorven soort New Orleans jazz, die ze ten gehore brachten: Hier falen gangbare maatstaven, zei wijlen Pim Gras als voorzitter van de jury, meen ik me te herinneren ....

Het concert van de zes Chinese muzikanten kun je eenvoudigweg in tweeën splitsen. Toen, halverwege, de schone Chinese zangeres opkwam en begon te zingen, kreeg het orkest een geweldige lift ...... Tijdens de eerste helft van het concert waren de mannen nerveus en onzeker - waarschijnlijk ten gevolge van de lange reis en de cultuurshock. Bedenk dat ze waarschijnlijk al decennialang nooit echt buiten de deuren van hun vertrouwde werkplek in het Peace hotel gespeeld hebben, dan die paar weken dat ze, wegens de verbouwing in hun eigen hotel, uit moesten wijken naar het Hua Ting Hotel een paar straten verderop. Ze speelden voornamelijk van bladmuziek, zonder enige swing, van standards als Perdido, Glenn Miller's In The Mood,
Besame Mucho en As Time Goes By, waarbij zenuwen de pianist en de saxofonist tijdens solo's parten speelden, zodat allerlei ongeplande blue notes of valse akkoorden zo af en toe het oor van de kritische luisteraar tergden ........... Het was haast aandoenlijk te zien hoe ze steeds opgelucht meeklapten met het publiek als de eindstreep van een nummer gehaald was ........... Ze hadden, zonder twijfel de dag van hun leven ........... Een avond, een trip, om nooit te vergeten. Je kon merken dat ze verbaasd waren over die grote zaal vol mensen, die aandachtig en begripvol hun verrichtingen volgden - die aandacht zal in de lobby van het Peace hotel wel eens wat minder zijn.
De Chinese zangeres. die vertelde dat ze normaal nooit met de mannen optrad, zong mee op een viertal populaire Chinese nummers uit de jaren dertig en veertig en het was ontroerend om te zien hoe de mannen op de eerste rij, gewapend met Braziliaanse percussie-instrumenten (made in China) genoten van de evergreens en zachtjes meezongen. Ze bracht nummers ten gehore als Give Me A Kiss, Flowers in the Night en Fly Me To The Moon. De Peace Hotel Jazz Band eindigde haar optreden met een verrassing: The Peace Hotel Jazz Band will now play for you a special tune that will surprise you (= De Peace Hotel Jazz Band zal nu afsluiten met een speciaal nummer voor jullie, dat je zal verrassen ........) waarschuwde de zangeres, die overigens een zeer fraaie stem had. Als een soort bedankje voor het publiek, dat het concert braaf had uitgezeten, werd de zaal vergast op een Chinese bewerking van het nummer Tulpen Uit Amsterdam, of Tulpen Uit Rotterdam, zoals de presentator die de bands aan- en afkondigde, de titel verhaspelde. Het Northsea Jazzfestival dat de laatste tijd nogal eens als kritiek te horen krijgt, dat er bijna geen jazz meer te horen is tijdens het festival ( I haven't heard Jazz, zou Barry Harris in het volgende concert teleurgesteld opmerken), bewees in ieder geval, dat het festival ook de bezoekers wil verrassen ........... en dat had het mij gedaan .............. Ik had geen mooiere start kunnen bedenken voor mijn zondagse festivaldag ........ met tranen in de ogen!
Gelukkig hebben reizigers de Peace Hotel Jazz Band, toen ze een paar jaar geleden in het Hua Ting hotel speelden in Shanghai, vastgelegd op film - geniet dus van hun muziek op locatie ........... Voor de opnamen uit Rotterdam zullen we moeten wachten op de documentaire.

Het Northsea Jazzfestival editie 2011 zit er weer op. Hoewel het festival nogal wat kritiek van jazzliefhebbers krijgt, die hun geliefde muziek maar moeilijk meer kunnen vinden tussen alle rap, soul en rockgeweld, wil het ook mensen verrassen en over grenzen heen laten kijken. Op zondag 10 juli 2011 lukte dat prima met de Chinese Peace Hotel Jazz Band uit Shanghai; zes bejaarde muzikanten, die hun even gedateerde muziek probeerden te slijten ...... de mannen hadden de dag van hun leven ........ en Keep Swinging ook; tot tranen geroerd .... Keep Swinging deelt graag dit soort verrassende concerten. NORTH SEA JAZZ 2010: A REVIEW

Last weekend, the North Sea Jazz 2010 festival, scheduled from Friday the 9th up to Sunday the 11th of July, 2010 was characterized by the tropical temperatures inside and outside the halls and, of course, the FIFA World Cup 2010 Final between the soccer teams from The Netherlands and Spain and as you might know: Holland reached the second position and Spain was one but last.Bob Brookmeyer (North Sea Jazz Festival 2010 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

I visited the festival on Saturday, the 10th of July, 2010. Like most festival in the past, the Hudson hall is for me the place to be - the first concert was by the Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra.

Bob Brookmeyer, now in his 80s, suggested to start a new project: to install air conditioning. Although known for playing the valve trombone in the 1950s with great names like Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, as one of the founders of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band and conductor of the Danish Radio Big Band, he only played his instrument for a small intro in the first tune - as the leader of his New Art Orchestra he conducted the band sitting on a high chair with his back to the audience marking the accents of the music with some finger snaps......

All tunes played that evening were compositions by Bob Brookmeyer, or as he said: I'm involved with most of them. Most compositions had great harmonic structures - personally I love to hear a more swinging big band .... Well, never mind - Ruud Breuls, our Dutch trumpet player and member of the New Art Orchestra learned that he is a great soloist. Bob had dedicated one of his compositions to his grandson, whose birthday was celebrated in Rotterdam. He surprised his grandfather during the concert with a bouquet of flowers........

The second band at the Hudson was the Ornettte Coleman Quartet. Ornette, now 80 years old, was the Artist in Residence of the festival- On Friday he performed with an original member of his trio Charlie Haden and the son-of the late Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman.

At the Saturday concert he played with his regular quartet featuring Al Mac Dowell on electric bass, Tony Falanga on double bass and his son Donardo Coleman on drums. Ornette is a legendary alto saxophone player who upset and divided the jazz scene during the 1960s with his new free style music experiences.

Now, fifty years later, he sounds more sophisticated ( or did my ears changed?) playing his white alto saxophone and trumpet ( and violin on one tune), but he still loves to surprise the audience.Mari Okubo (North Sea Jazz Festival 2010 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

What to think about the Japanese vocalist Mari Okubo, who has, Ornette Coleman says on her website, one of the most beautiful voices coming from a human being. Mari seemed to look out for the permitted limits of the audience, imitating a fufu zela or what so ever .....

The third band that was scheduled at the Hudson, seemed to be a small All-Star band itself: Bobby Hutcherson on vibes; Cedar Walton at the keys; David Williams on double bass and Eddie Marshall on drums.

Bobby Hutcherson, one of the last of the vibes players is known for his part in the classic Eric Dolphy album Out Of Lunch and his Blue Note albums, like Dialogue and Night in Barcelona ( with Hariold Land). Nine years ago I heard him before with the McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, at the Congresgebouw in The Hague.

Cedar Walton, which I heard before with Roy Hargrove ( Porgy en Bess - February 1998) and the Johnny Griffin & Roy Hargrove + Cedar Walton Trio at the Congresgebouw in The Hague ( July 2002), performed in the past with names like J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan and still is a sought after accompanist.

David Williams performed in the past with great names like Charles McPherson, Duke Jordan, Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, Art Pepper, Slide Hampton, and, of course, with Cedar Walton.

Drummer Eddie Marshall played with Charlie Mariano, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Dexter Gordon and recorded with Bobby Hutcherson, like on the 1977 Blue Note album "Now".

Bobby Hutcherson learned that he is still a gifted instrumentalist, fighting against his asthma ( It seemed that a fan near his feet didn't bring much lightening), joked with the audience and had them laughing, while the rhythm section learned what great musicians they are. It was, for me, one of the high lights of the evening.

Visiting the North Sea Jazz Festival means that you have to make choices. So I missed some great concerts I loved to have joined, like the Kenny Barron Trio with David Sanchez which played for a packed Madeira hall and the David Sanborn - Joe DeFrancesco - Steve Gadd trio. I've heard parts of these concerts and I'd love to hear more - a good reason to return next year.

I was just in time to join the presentation of the award ceremony of the Dutch Jazz Competition. The winner of this prestigious award for young jazz players was The Castel / Van Damme Kwartet. Jasper Van Damme, born and raised in our region Zeeland ( like Rik Mol, Jan Menu and the Feen Brothers) also received the Norma prize for Best Soloist 2010. I hope to hear these four promising musicians ( Thierry Castel (piano), Jasper Van Damme ( saxes), - Sven Happel (bass) and Mark Schilders ( drums) once in concert.

Each year ten thousands of jazz fans world wide look forward to visit the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. It's the biggest jazz indoor festival in the world. On Saturday the 10th of July, 2010 the Hudson hall in the Ahoy building in Rotterdam was for me the plays to be. I joined three concerts with only great names as a living encyclopediae of jazz history: Bob Brookmeyer, Ornette Coleman, Bobby Hutcherson and Cedar Walton. I love to look back to that evening ..... NORTHSEA JAZZ 2010: EEN TERUGBLIK

Afgelopen weekend stond in het teken van het 35ste Northsea Jazzfestival ( 9 t/m 11 juli 2010) en de finale voor de wereldbeker voetbal in Zuid-Afrika. Ik bezocht het festival op zaterdag 10 juli 2010. Voor mij was de Hudsonzaal deze keer the place to be, omdat de programmering grote namen beloofde - een reis door de geschiedenis van de jazz. Het eerste concert was dat van het New Art Orchestra o.l.v. Bob Brookmeyer.

Bob Brookmeyer, nu een breekbare oude man van in de tachtig ( maar eenmaal op zijn kruk een inspirerend bandleider), suggereerde om als eerstvolgende project te kiezen voor ........ airconditioning gezien de tropische temperaturen in de zaal een prima suggestie. Hoewel beroemd geworden door zijn spel op de ventieltrombone in de jaren vijftig met musici als Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band ( hij was één van de oprichters) en dirigent van de Danish Radio Big Band, bleef het instrument, behoudens een korte intro op het eerste nummer, in zijn houder staan.

De stukken, alle composities van Bob, konden me niet allemaal boeien, maar solisten zoals onze eigen Ruud Breuls op trompet lieten horen begenadigde solisten te zijn. Zittend op zijn hoge kruk, met zijn rug naar het publiek, schijnbaar moeiteloos het orkest leidend ( met een vingertje werden haast achteloos de accenten aangegeven) werd vooral appèl gedaan op de schitterende harmonische verbanden en slechts af en toe werd het publiek getrakteerd op swingende big band, iets wat ik graag hoor. Eén van de composities werd speciaal uitgevoerd vanwege de verjaardag van zijn kleinzoon, die opa, na afloop, verraste met een bos bloemen.

Het tweede optreden in de Hudson was het Ornettte Coleman Quartet. Ornette, nu 80 jaar oud, is Artist in Residence, was inhoudt dat hij tijdens het festival in een aantal concerten te horen is. Zo speelde hij op vrijdag met Charlie Haden, bassist uit zijn beroemde trio en met Joshua Redman, zoon van de onlangs overleden Dewey Redman, die ook deel uit maakte van Coleman's groepen.

Tijdens het concert van zaterdag speelde hij met zijn reguliere kwartet met Al Mac Dowell op elektrische bas, Tony Falanga op akoestische bas en zijn zoon Denardo Coleman op drums. Ornette is bij leven al een legende vanwege zijn experimentele opnamen uit 1960 waarbij hij de toenmalige jazzscene in beroering bracht en een stijl creëerde, die de freejazz zou gaan heten.

Nu, vijftig jaar later, klinkt zijn muziek iets meer gepolijst ( of zijn onze oren veranderd!), maar weet hij met zijn witte altsax en trompet ( en incidenteel de viool) toch nog steeds met zijn optreden het publiek te verrassen. Wat te denken van de Japanse zangeres Mari Okubo, volgens Ornette Coleman One of the most beautiful voices coming from a human being (= Eén van de mooiste menselijke stemmen). die hij als speciale gast had uitgenodigd en die met haar stem als een fufu zela de grenzen van het toelaatbare opzocht.

De derde band op het Hudson-podium was bijna een All-star band te noemen: Bobby Hutcherson zittend achter zijn vibrafoon; Cedar Walton aan de piano, David Williams op bas en Eddie Marshall op slagwerk.

Bobby Hutcherson, één van de laatste van de grote vibrafonisten, hij speelde ooit mee op het klassieke Eric Dolphy album Out Of Lunch, is vooral bekend geworden om zijn Blue Note platen, zoals Night in Barcelona ( met Hariold Land) en Dialogue. Negen jaar gelden hoorde ik hem al eens bij het McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, toen nog in het Congresgebouw in Den Haag.

Cedar Walton, die overigens, las ik, met zijn kwartet al op het eerste festival in 1977 present was, is voor mij ook geen onbekend meer. Ik hoorde hem eerder in Porgy en Bess bij Roy Hargrove ( februari 1998) en het Johnny Griffin & Roy Hargrove + Cedar Walton Trio in het Congresgebouw in Den Haag ( juli 2002). Hij speelde in het verleden met bijna alle grootten in de jazz ( J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan en Roy Hargrove om even een onvolledig lijstje te maken en dat vooral omdat hij zo'n geweldige begeleider is.

David Williams, ook zo'n gezochte muzikant vanwege zijn solide basspel begeleidde namen als Charles McPherson, Duke Jordan, Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, Art Pepper, Slide Hampton, en natuurlijk, Cedar Walton.

Bobby Hutcherson, pontificaal gezeten achter zijn reusachtig instrument, liet horen dat hij nog steeds een begenadigd instrumentalist is - grappen makend met het publiek maar vechtend tegen zijn astma ( een ventilator naast hem op de grond bracht weinig verlichting), wist hij het publiek in te pakken en af te leiden van de vaak schitterende solo's van de ritmesectie. Dit concert was voor mij één van de hoogtepunten van de avond.

Als je kiest voor het Northsea betekent dit onvermijdelijk keuzes maken en aan sommige concerten kun je dan alleen maar ruiken en wellicht concluderen dat je een kans hebt laten liggen. Eén zo'n concert, waar ik even achterin van kon genieten was dat van het Kenny Barron Trio met David Sanchez, die in een volgepakte Madeira speelde en het David Sanborn - Joe DeFrancesco - Steve Gadd trio, waarbij ik alleen nog een plaatsje helemaal achterin op de tribune kon scoren - niet de meest comfortabele plek om van zo'n optreden te genieten. Volgend jaar beter denk ik dan maar .........

Bij toeval was ik precies op tijd in de Volga om daar de bekendmaking en uitreiking bij te wonen van de Dutch Jazz Competition. De winnaar van deze belangrijke aanmoedigingsprijs voor jong Nederlands talent werd het Castel / Van Damme Kwartet. Jasper Van Damme, geboren en getogen in Zeeland ( net als overigens Rik Mol, Jan Menu en de Feen Brothers) ontving eerder de solistenprijs 2010. Ik hoop deze groep, met Thierry Castel (piano), Jasper Van Damme ( saxen), Sven Happel (bas) en Mark Schilders ( slagwerk) een keer live te kunnen zien spelen.

Het Northsea Jazzfestival behoort voor tienduizenden jazzfans uit Nederland en verre omstreken tot een vast ankerpunt in het jaar. Zaterdag 10 juli 2010 waren in de Hudson zaal in het Ahoy complex in Rotterdam een aantal indrukwekkende concerten gepland waarvan ik er drie bezocht. Een terugblik op een tropisch heet Ahoy met Ornette Coleman, Bob Brookmeyer, Cedar Walton en Bobby Hutcherson - een rij namen die thuis hoort in een eregallerij van de jazz.

Als je het leuk vindt om te lezen over dit soort legenden uit de jazzgeschiedenis, maar ook over nu geheel vergeten helden uit een ver verleden, vraag dan de nieuwsbrief.
