North Sea Jazz 2008

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

The North Sea Jazz Festival 2008 has been scedulded at the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam for the 11th up to the 13th of July 2008. Hundreds of musicans will perform during those three days. I hope to visit the festival on Friday, because I found some great names I hope to see live in concert.

This year the theme of the festival is Vocals in Jazz, but the only vocalist I really love to hear is Roberta Gambarini. Her performances at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( in the southwest part of The Netherlands), were great events, so I hope to take a quick glance at her. She will be part of the so-called Hank Jones 90th Birthday Concert, sceduled at the Hudson Hall, with Roy Hargrove and, of course, the eminent grise at the piano Hank Jones, who hopes to reach the age of 90 at the end of this month. Roy Hargrove needs no further introduction here - he's a regular guest at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen.

I found a small fragment with these three great musicians at a previous concert.

Other great names I love to hear are Herbie Hancock, who plays with his quintet, featuring Dave Holland and Chris Potter; Segio Mendes and Terence Blanchard, who will play with Tom Scott and the L.A. Express. Also Joey DeFrancesco, the great Hammond B3 Organ player will be in that band, which also includes the son of legendary trumpet player Nat Adderley, Nat Adderley jr. at the piano.
Terence Blanchard
And what to think about the Ron Carter Quartet featuring Stephen Scott ?... or the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio?
There is one band I hope to hear for the very first time: the Bik Bent Braam. I am fascinated by this Dutch piano player Michiel Braam since the 1990s, but I never have heard him in concert. I found a small fragment of this band I love to share with you as an overture to the concert.

See you Friday in Rotterdam !!

EDISON NOMINATIONS
A few days ago I pointed you to the Edison Jazzism Publieksprijs - the ten best Dutch Jazz Albums nominated for that prize. You can find a
list of 10 nominations, with great names in Dutch Jazz like Benjamin Herman, Josée Koning, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Michiel Borstlap and Rik Mol. You can give your voice to the best album in that list. I'm very proud to let you know that Rik Mol, the trumpet player, is a very good choice, not only because he lives here in our region ( in the province of Zeeland in the southwest part of The Netherlands), but because he has his own sound and probably will end in the top 3 of this list: Make your choice !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
