Johnny Griffin (1928-2008)

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.) Saxofonist Griffin (80) overleden. ( = Saxophone player Griffin (80) passed away ) ( Source: Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant 26th of July 2008)
The death of Johnny Griffin was no breaking news in our local news paper yesterday. Only a small message somewhere on the bottom of page 8.

On Friday 25th of July 2008 Johnny Griffin passed away at his house in Mauprevoir in France at the age of 80, due to a heart attack.
He belonged to the great legendary tenorsaxophone players of the 1950s and onwards and I found a great jam session that proves this. On the Blue Note recording A Blowin' Session Johnny Griffin plays his instrument in his septet beside his collegues on tenor
Hank Mobley and John Coltrane. It is really a great Blue Note recording, reissued in 1999 in its Rudy Van Gelder Edition. The other members of that 1957 septet were Art Blakey on drums - in whose Jazz Messengers Griffin played. Lee Morgan on trumpet, like Wynton Kelly (piano) members of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and Paul Chambers bass. Four tunes were released on the originally album; the Rudy Van Gelder Edition reissue has an extra 11 minute version of Smoke Stack, which has, as the liner notes read, a more characteristically urgent improvisation by John Coltrane then the originally 10-minutes take. I love to play this record especially for both two versions of Smoke Stack.

Blue Monk by Johnny Griffin and Artyur Taylor Quartet (feat. Johnny Griffin tenorsax - René Urtreger piano - Alby Cullaz bass - Art Taylor drums ( French Television (ORTF presented by André Francis)
I remember this little giant on the tenor saxophone in a concert May 2002 at the Chassé Theater in Breda in the south of the Netherlands, together with the Rein De Graaff Trio, featuring Rein De Graaff piano, Marius Beets bass and Eric Ineke drums. A great performer, although in his 70s already - great solos and always joking on stage.
A second concert I remember was Johnny Griffin with the Roy Hargrove - Cedar Walton trio featuring, except the mentioned players, Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson and Alvin Queen, both two skilled accompanists. This concert was scedulded in the Jan Steenzaal at the Congrescentrum in The Hague at the North Sea Jazz Festival July 2002. In 1994 Johnny Griffin was one of the tenor player invited for the album Roy Hargrove with the Tenors of our Time in tunes like his own composition When We Were One and Cyrus Chestnut's Greens At The Chicken Shack.( Verve523019)

Do It by Johnny Griffin and the Super Swing Machine of Gérard Badini (1996)
There is one think I still blame myself for, that I didn't realize that Johnny lived in Holland for a long time, almost around the corner in Bergambacht at the Kerksingel, while I lived in a village nearby.
If there is a all star band above, I'm sure there will be kept a place for Johnny and his tenor in the front line. I'm sure we'll hear about that !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
Saxofonist Griffin (80) overleden.

In 1994 was Johnny Griffin één van de tenorsaxofonisten, die Roy Hargrove uitnodigde voor zijn album Roy Hargrove with the Tenors of our Time, waaop hij zijn eigen compositie When We Were One en Cyrus Chestnut's Greens At The Chicken Shack mocht spelen ( Verve 523019)
