Coleman Hawkins and the Ramblers

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Coleman Hawkins by Boy ten Hove ( from Boy ten Hove's caricatures - Ate Van Delden (2006))

On the 4th of February 1935, 72 years ago, Coleman Hawkins recorded with the Ramblers Dance Orchestra a set of recordings that would become the most important recordings in Dutch jazz in the 1930s.

Coleman Hawkins don't need any introduction I guess, as he became the most important tenor saxophone player of the XXth century, who could make a bridge between the traditional swing and more modern bebop jazz styles. He played with all great musicians until his death in 1969.

In the early 1930s Hawkins played in the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. In 1934 he traveled to Europe for an engagement with the Hylton band. The tour with the Hylton's became a great success, so he decided to stay in Europe. In February 1935 he performed in The Netherlands with The Ramblers and recorded five tunes on the 4th of February: Some Of These Days, After You've Gone, I Only Have Eyes For you, I Wish I Were Twins and Hands Across The Table. These recordings were released on three Decca records. Annie De Reuver sings on three of the tunes.

Coleman Hawkins toured around Europe and recorded with The Berry's ( Switserland ) and Django Reinhard and Benny Carter in Paris in April 1937. In the meantime he recorded several times with the Ramblers ( in Laren - The Netherlands) ( Aug. 1935 and April 1937), with Freddy Johnson in Hilversum (The Netherlands - Summer of 1937) and with his trio in June 1938.
In 1939 he left for the US, just before the Second World War spread its wings over Europe.

Although he had been out of the country for more then five years ( no www, MTV or satelite TV at that time) the readers of Down Beat chose him as the Best Tenor Player before the end of the year. What a musician !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

In februari 1935 trad hij op in Nederland met De Ramblers en nam hij op de vierde van die maand vijf titels op: Some Of These Days, After You've Gone, I Only Have Eyes For You, I Wish I Were Twins en Hands Across The Table.
