Strange Fruit

The song Strange Fruit, written by Lewis Allan, might be the most pure blues song ever written. It was written by a Jewish teacher, Abel Meeropol ( under the pseudonym of Lewis Allan, who had seen the pictures of the hanging parties that were the order of the day in the deep south of the States. The racial discriminiation in the so-called Bible Belt was still a gruesome fact. Billie Holiday received a copy of his poem from Abel Meeropol himself, who also composed the music, but her record company then Vocalion, didn't want to release it. Billie Holiday recorded it for Commodore April 1939 and I have it on a great Commodore LP titled The Greatest Interpretations of Billie Holiday ( GXC 3143).
Billie's interpretation of this song is great - I don't know a better version. I'm glad that I can show you a film fragment where you can see her singing it.

Another interpretation was recorded by Nina Simone during the 1960s. Her version is used in the film fragment below. The last fragment is by Nia, four years old, although I suppose that she's too young to understand where she's singing about.

Both Frank and George could tell me that the film I was refering to in my Bud Powell contribution somedays ago, was Round Midnight. I had made a contribution about that film in a previous blog. Congratulations !!

Het lied Strange Fruit, geschreven door Lewis Allan, is ongetwijdeld de meest pure bluessong ooit geschreven. Het is geschreven door de Joodse onderwijzer Abel Meeropol ( onder de schuilnaam Lewis Allan), die hierin de dagelijkse lynchpartijen van blanken tegenover zwarte arbeiders aan de kaak stelde. Hij had hiervan foto's gezien. Deze ophangingen waren in het diepe zuiden van de VS in die tijd aan de orde van de dag. Deze gruwelijke vorm van rassendiscriminatie werd vooral zichtbaar in de zgn. Bible Belt, het gebied met streng religieuze bevolkingsgroepen. Billie Holiday kreeg het lied uit handen van Abel Meeropol, die er ook muziek bij geschreven had, maar haar platenmaatschappij, Vocalion, zag er niets in . Commodore wel en zo nam Billie Holiday dit nummer op in april 1939. Ik heb deze versie op een schitterende Commodore LP getiteld: The Greatest Interpretations of Billie Holiday ( GXC 3143).
De versie van Billie is onovertroffen - ik ken geen betere versie. Ik ben dan ook blij dat er een filmfragment bestaat waarop Billie haar versie laat horen.

Een andere versie is die van Nina Simone uit de jaren zestig. Haar lied is gebruikt als achtergrond bij een kort filmfragment. Ten slotte wil ik jullie nog de versie van Nia laten horen, vier jaar oud; al betwijfel ik of ze weet waarover ze zingt.

Zowel Frank als George konden me vertellen dat de film waarop ik in mijn bijdrage over Bud Powell doelde Roud Midnight was. Ik heb hierover in een voorgaande blog over geschreven. Gefeliciteerd !
