In May 2011 the Dutch tenor saxophone player Ferdinand Povel was granted with the prestigeous VPRO / Boy Edgar award at a concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. At this concert bands like the Amsterdams Conservatory Big Band, the Ferdinand Povel/John Marshall Quintet, the Sanna Van Vliet Trio and, last but not least, the Ruud Jacobs Quintet were scheduled.

Ferdinand Povel, born in Haarlem (The Netherlands), February 1947, was granted with Hollands most prestigious award, the VPRO / Boy Edgar award. The jury's report reads, ... een verfijnd stilist die een aansprekend breed geluid koppelt aan een vloeiende, melodieuze manier van soleren. (= a refined stylist, who combines an attractive, broad sound with a fluent, lyrical approach.). Zijn improvisaties zijn helder gestructureerd en toegankelijk zonder dat ze daarbij aan avontuurlijkheid inboeten. (= His improvisations are accessible, clearly structured and yet adventurous) ( translation: Jeroen De Valk). Ferdinand Povel is one of those typically sidemen who seem to be well-satisfied with their place in the band, being just one of the musicians, hidden on stage ..... Since his first recording, as part of the Kwartet Martin Haak in a live concert at Oud-Loosdrecht, in the centre of Holland, August 1964, he was present as a sideman at a hundred recording sessions, with US and European musician like Peter Herbolzheimer, Dusko Goykovich, Boy Edgar ( the legendary Dutch band leader who gave its name to the award), Toots Thielemans, Slide Hampton, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, Ack Van Rooyen or John Marshall ( to list some), but his own recordings are seemed to be few and far between: I found some, like the Ferdinand Povel Quartet (1969) at a small Cat EP ( with Henk Elkerbout, Fred Pronk and Eric Ineke) and two 1983 albums ( Beboppin' and a VARAjazz lp) with his Quintet.

He loves the music, but hates the business .... Jeroen De Valk, a Dutch jazz journalist characterizes him in the booklet of the recently released album Good Bait. This album, which is now in my cd-player, was actually not planned at all. In November 2008 Rein De Graaff organized a small tour with his trio, enlarged with guest players Ferdinand Povel and the American tenor saxophone player Pete Christlieb at a series of concerts at Dutch jazz clubs. The 2nd of November, 2008 this quintet was scheduled at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen, in the south-west part of The Netherlands. The next week the quintet joined a concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. When we were at the Bimhuis, a recording engineer asked if he could record the whole night as a try-out for a concert he had to record the next day, Rein told Jeroen: I told him to do whatever he wanted, as long as he gave me a copy, perhaps not realising the night would be that great.

And the concert was more then a dime a dozen; both guests enjoyed playing together. Pete and Ferdinand formed a kind of a mutual admiration society, Jeroen de Valk quotes Rein in the informative liner notes. They liked each other and inspired each other. After the concert Rein got his tape, which sounded so well that Timeless records, the label where all recent Rein De Graaff recordings are released, decided to produce an album, entitled: Ferdinand Povel & Pete Christlieb with the Rein de Graaff Trio - Good Bait - Live at the Amsterdam Bimhuis ( Timeless CDSJP484). The soloists do their jobs well, like the trio that accompanies the two talented reed players. The Rein De Graaff Trio features pianist, and producer of hundreds of interesting concerts with almost forgotten legendary US jazz musicians; bass player Marius Beets and drummer Eric Ineke. As usual Rein's repertoire during these short "Americans in Europe" tours are the US standards, most from the bebop period, like Good Bait, a well known Tadd Dameron composition recorded by Dizzy Gillespie in 1945; the Gershwin classics All The Things You Are and Embraceable You. The tune Milestones, used for this concert, is the first version, Miles Davis recorded it in 1947 with his All-Stars - a great timeless bebop tune, you don't often hear played live like that nowadays ....... In 1958 Miles would record another version of Milestones, not related to the first one, with his famous Sextet featuring the crème de la crème of 1950s jazz: Cannonbal Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Both Milestones #1 as the seldom heard Parker 51, part of the Stan Getz repertoire in the early 1950s, belong to my favourites. This fall, in November 2011, Rein will introduce us to Sam Most, the legendary flute player, who performed in the bands of Paul Quinichette, Teddy Wilson, Buddy Rich and Red Norvo. It's a pity that Rein won't perform in concert with this great flute player in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen or elsewhere in the south west part of The Netherlands next season.

Rein De Graaff, still going strong, puts Ferdinand Povel with this great album in the spotlights and if you wonder why Ferdinand deserved this VPRO/Boy Edgar award, please listen to this concert ......... and enjoy it.

Some musicians don't love to be spotlighted - they love to play their music somewhere hidden in the band. Ferdinand Povel is one of them - he has to come out of the shadows ...... Six weeks ago he received the prestigious VPRO/Boy Edgar award, a appreciation for his long career as a tenor saxophonist and teacher of the instrument; a complete generation of Dutch saxophone players learned from him the tricks of the instrument. In the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, November 2008, a concert was scheduled by the Rein De Graaff Trio with Ferdinand Povel and Pete Cristlieb as guests and this concert was, accidentally, recorded and released on a great Timeless album, which learns why Ferdinand was granted this award: a must have ..... Op 16 mei jl. ontving de Nederlandse tenorsaxofonist Ferdinand Povel de prestigieuze VPRO / Boy Edgarprijs tijdens een feestelijke bijenkomst in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Tijdens dit programma traden o.a. de Big Band van het Amsterdams Conservatorium, het Ferdinand Povel/John Marshall Quintet, het Sanna Van Vliet Trio en als afsluiting het Ruud Jacobs Quintet op. Helaas heb ik dit optreden en het liveconcert op Radio 6 gemist. Zijn improvisaties zijn helder gestructureerd en toegankelijk zonder dat ze daarbij aan avontuurlijkheid inboeten. Ferdinand Povel is zo'n typische sideman, die tevreden is met een plekje in het orkest en daar uitstekend werk verricht, zonder zelf als leider in de schijnwerper te willen staan. Sinds de eerste opnamen met het Kwartet Martin Haak, geregistreerd in augustus 1964 tijdens een concert in Oud-Loosdrecht, heeft hij aan zo'n honderd opnamesessies meegedaan met grote namen uit de Internationale jazzscene, zoals Peter Herbolzheimer, Dusko Goykovich, Boy Edgar ( de Nederlandse bandleider, die zijn naam leende aan de VPRO/Boy Edgarprijs), Toots Thielemans, Slide Hampton, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, Ack van Rooyen of John Marshall ( om er een paar op te noemen), maar het aantal opnamen met een eigen groep zijn op de vingers van één hand te tellen ......... Ik vond een CAT EP-tje uit 1969 met zijn kwartet, met daarin Henk Elkerbout, Fred Pronk en Eric Ineke) en in 1983 twee platen ( Beboppin' en een plaat in de serie VARAjazz lp's) met zijn kwintet.

maar niet van het gedoe eromheen. De CD, Good Bait, die ik nu op de draaitafel heb liggen ( klinkt toch altijd nog beter dan dat je schrijft die ik in mijn cd-speler gestopt heb) is eigenlijk bij toeval ontstaan. Rein de Graaff organiseerde in november 2008 met zijn trio samen met Ferdinand Povel en de Amerikaanse tenorsaxofonist Pete Christlieb een serie concerten langs Nederlandse podia en speelde toen o.a. op 2 november in de Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen. Een week later speelde het vijftal in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam en toen ze bezig waren met de soundcheck vroeg de technicus of Rein er bezwaar tegen had als hij, bij wijze van test ( de volgende dag zouden er cd-opnamen gemaakt worden) het concert zou opnemen. Je doet maar, had Rein gezegd, als ik maar een kopie van de opnamen krijg.

Het werd geen concert a dime a dozen, van dertien in een dozijn; de gastspelers hadden er duidelijk zin in; Pete and Ferdinand formed a kind of a mutual admiration society, citeert Jeroen de Valk Rein in het informatieve bijbehorende boekje: They liked each other and inspired each other; Het klikte die avond tussen Pete en Ferdinand en ze inspireerden elkaar. Na afloop van het concert kreeg Rein de opnamen, die zo interessant waren dat Timeless, het label waar ook Rein's andere opnamen verschijnen, besloot ze uit te brengen: Ferdinand Povel & Pete Christlieb with the Rein de Graaff Trio - Good Bait - Live at the Amsterdam Bimhuis ( Timeless CDSJP484). De cd, waarvan de opnamen live plaatsvonden in het Bimhuis aan het IJ in Amsterdam op 6 november 2008, bevat een zestal nummers, waarvan meer dan de helft met een speelduur van meer dan tien minuten ..... zoals dat hoort bij een live-registratie. De solisten krijgen alle ruimte en het begeleidingstrio, bestaande uit Rein De Graaff, pianist, maar bovenal inspirator en organisator van honderden belangwekkend concerten met (bijna vergeten) grote (vergeten) namen uit de Amerikaanse jazzgeschiedenis; bassist Marius Beets en slagwerker Eric Ineke kwijt zich uitstekend van haar taak: het begeleiden van deze twee getalenteerde saxofonisten. Zoals gebruikelijk bij de concerten van Rein, waarvoor hij Amerikanen naar Nederland haalt, (dit najaar hoopt hij Sam Most naar ons land te halen, die o.a. bij Paul Quinichette, Teddy Wilson, Buddy Rich en Red Norvo speelde - helaas wordt Zeeland niet aangedaan.) wordt er hoofdzakelijk geput uit het rijke beboprepertoire, zoals dat in de jaren veertig en vijftig gespeeld werd, zoals: Good Bait, de Tadd Dameron compositie, die voor het eerst door Dizzy Gillespie in 1945 aan het schellak toevertrouwd werd en de Gershwin klassiekers All The Things You Are en Embraceable You.

Het nummer Milestones, de eerste versie, die Miles Davis in 1947 met zijn All-Stars opnam, is zo'n heerlijk tijdloos bebopnummer, zoals je dat nog maar zelden live hoort spelen. Miles zou in 1958 het nummer Milestones opnieuw opnemen ( met Cannonbal Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers en Philly Joe Jones) maar behalve de naam hebben beide nummers niets gemeen. Dit nummer, samen met het niet zo vaak gehoorde Parker 51, dat begin jaren vijftig op het repertoire van Stan Getz stond, zijn mijn favorieten van dit album. Rein de Graaff, still going strong, zet met het uitbrengen van deze plaat, terecht Ferdinand Povel in het zonnetje en wie nog mocht twijfelen aan het vakmanschap van Ferdinand, wordt met deze plaat genadeloos teruggefloten.

Sommige mensen hoeven niet persé in de schijnwerpers te staan - ze genieten ervan om, in de schaduw van de leider van de band, hun muziek te spelen. Ferdinand Povel is er zo één, maar nu hij de VPRO/Boy Edgarprijs heeft mogen ontvangen, een waardering voor zijn jarenlange carriere op de saxofoon en inzet bij het opleiden en begeleiden van een hele generatie saxofonisten, komt hij er niet meer onderuit. In 2008 vond in het Bimhuis een concertplaats met Pete Cristlieb en Rein de Graaff en zijn trio en deze mooie live-registratie geeft een prachtig beeld van Ferdinand Povel's kunnen - een must have ..... Keep Swinging wijst graag op dit soort grote namen, die liever in de schaduw opereren, maar de schijwerpers verdienen. Sunday afternoon, the 2nd of November 2008, the Rein De Graaff Trio performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, a small city in the south west part of The Netherlands, near the Belgian border. Rein brought two special guests - two of his most favorite tenor saxophone players: Pete Christlieb and Ferdinand Povel. The Rein De Graaff Trio features Rein De Graaff on the keys, Marius Beets on bass. ( He took the place of Koos Serierse years ago, the regular bass player for several decades) and Eric Ineke, the drummer - active since the trio was founded.

This special quintet performed two sets for an enthusiastic audience, in which tunes where performed like Wabash, the fifty years old Cannonbal Adderley composition; All The Things You Are and the 1947 Milestones, recorded by Miles Davis and his All Stars featuring Charlie Parker on the tenor (!) saxophone. This version is less known compared to the other one, the 1958 Milestones Miles Davis recorded with his Quintet ( featuring Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane).

Pete Christlieb, born in Los Angeles, February 1945, has a career of 45 years up to now and played with a lot of famous names, like Chet Baker and Woody Herman in the 1960s. Late 1960s he cooperated with Louie Bellson and became a sought after film and TV musician for several decades. He was a regular member of the Doc Severinsen Orchestra, which played at the Tonight Show. During his work as a studio musician he accompanied vocalists like Sarah Vaughan. In the 1980s he founded his own quartet.

During the concert we learned that he is a skilled ballad player, special in the tune Body and Soul, a tenor's man dillemma Rein De Graaff labeled this Coleman Hawkins classic. He showed us that he is a solid player in the more fast pieces. Rein De Graaff "discovered" Pete Christlieb fourty years ago thanks to a record he found and since that day they are close friends. Pete Christlieb toured with the Rein De Graaff Trio twenty years ago with Lew Tabackin and in 1995 he played together with David Fathead Newman and Toon Roos in a series of Tenor Meeting concerts.

Ferdinand Povel is a regular guest in Porgy en Bess jazz club and performed with Rein De Graaff in previous concerts, like a tour labeled as Jubilee Jazz Party with Bennie Bailey, Ronnie Cuber and Herb Geller. He belongs to the best saxophone players in Holland and abroad. I remember him in a previous concert with the John Marshal-Ferdinand Povel European Quintet early this year in Porgy en Bess. Ferdinand Povel surprised with a great ballad I Fall In Love Too Easily.

Rein De Graaff, one of the few pure bebop musicians left in this part of the world ( do you ever hear tunes played live like Tadd Dameron's Good Bait?). He is, with his band, a regular guest of Porgy en Bess and surprises the audience time after time with musicians who know the ropes. Thanks Rein .......... hope to see you next year!

JUST RAMBLING ALONG - STAN LAUREL (1918)

Op 3 november 1918, negentig jaar geleden, werd de film Just Rambling Along met Stan Laurel in de hoofdrol gelanceerd. Stan Laurel, geboren in 1890 , werd, samen met zijn compagnon bekend door zijn vele korte films, twofers die ze in de jaren twintig en dertig maakten. Wie is er niet groot mee geworden? Toch zijn er maar weinigen die weten dat beide heren ook nog een carriere voor die komische Laurel & Hardy filmpjes hadden; dit stomme filmpje is er één uit de collectie van Stan Laurel. Deze stomme filmpjes echter zijn vaak van een slechte beeldkwaliteit en eigenlijk alleen leuk om te bekijken als je geinteresserd bent in de carriere van de hoofdpersoon.

In 1918 kreeg Stan Laurel een contract bij de Hal Roach studio voor twee jaar, omdat Armando Novello, die de rol van Toto, de clown zou spelen, het plotseling af liet weten. Deze eerste film was getiteld Just Rambling Along. Hij maakte vijf films in deze periode bij Hal Roach ( hij zou er later met Oliver Hardy terugkeren). De film heeft een paar aardige stukjes, maar het verhaal is flinterdun en de grappen flauw en voorspelbaar. Alleen als je goed oplet, ontdek je dat Stan toen al die fantastische timing had, die hem later beroemd zou maken. Het schijnt dat dit filmpje Just Rambling Along het oudste nog bstaande filmpje uit zijn oeuvre is. Kijken dus naar deze 90 jaar oude beelden ................

Op zondagmiddag 2 november 2008 trad het trio van Rein de Graaff op in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen met een tweetal bijzondere gasten - twee van zijn meest favoriete tenorsaxofonisten: Pete Christlieb en Ferdinand Povel. Het Trio van Rein
de Graaff bestaat al jaren uit dezelfde personen: Rein de Graaff achter het klavier, Marius Beets ( die al weer heel wat jaren geleden de strijkstok van Koos Serierse overnam) op bas en Eric Ineke slagwerk.

In een goed gevulde middenzaal speelde het gelegenheidskwintet een tweetal sets, waarin op geroutineerde wijze nummers als Wabash, vijftig jaar geleden geschreven door Julian Cannonbal Adderley; All The Things You Are en Milestones, de in 1947 door Miles Davis met zijn All Stars opgenomen versie, waarin o.a. Charlie Parker speelde op tenor (!) sax. Deze uitvoering is heel wat minder bekend dan de compositie, die Miles Davis in 1958 met zijn sextet ( met Cannonball Adderley en John Coltrane) aan de groeven toevertrouwde.

Pete Christlieb, geboren in Los Angeles februari 1945, staat al zo'n 45 jaar op het podium en speelde met vele bekende namen, zoals in de jaren zestig met Chet Baker en Woody Herman. Eind jaren zestig ging hij samenwerken met Louie Bellson en was hij te vinden in de film en tv studios, waarin hij meespeelde met het Doc Severinsen orkest, het vaste orkest van de Tonight Show. Tijdens zijn studiowerk begeleidde hij zangeressen als Sarah Vaughan. In de jaren tachtig formeerde hij een eigen kwartet.

Tijdens het concert liet hij horen een kundig balladspeler te zijn in het nummer Body and Soul, a tenor's man dillemma volgens Rein de Graaff, maar vooral in de snelle nummers liet hij horen zijn instrument perfect te beheersen. Rein
de Graaff "ontdekte" Pete Christlieb al zo'n veertig jaar geleden, dankzij één van zijn platen en bracht hem ook al eens naar Nederland, twintig jaar geleden, met Lew Tabackin en in 1995 met David Fathead Newman en Toon Roos in een eerdere Tenor Meeting concertserie.

Ferdinand Povel speelde al vele malen eerder in Porgy en Bess en met Rein de Graaff ( samen met Bennie Bailey, Ronnie Cuber en Herb Geller) en behoort tot het beste wat er in Nederland met een saxofoon rondloopt. Ik herinner me zijn schitterende optreden eerder dit jaar met het John Marshal-Ferdinand Povel European Quintet in februari van dit jaar. Ferdinand Povel speelde tijdens het concert van zondag de schitterende ballad I Fall In Love Too Easily.


Rein de Graaff, één van de weinige echte bebopmuzikanten, die we nog in Nederland hebben ( waar hoor je nog Tadd Dameron's Good Bait spelen?) is, met zijn ritmegroep, een graag geziene gast en weet de bezoekers van Porgy en Bess telkens weer te verrassen met musici, die de klappen van de zweep kennen. Bedankt Rein en ..... tot volgend jaar.

Het zaterdag in de PZC aangekondigde concert met Henry Threadgill had daar niet moeten staan - hij treedt wel komende vrijdag op in Theater Lantaarn / Het Venster in Rotterdam; een mooie gelegenheid om deze bijzondere avant-gardist op de saxofoon uit de jaren zestig ( en de jaren daarna), live te beluisteren.

STAN LAUREL - JUST RAMBLING ALONG (1918)
On the 3rd of November 1918, today ninety years ago, the film Just Rambling Along with Stan Laurel as the main charcater, was released. Stan Laurel, who was born in 1890 , became, of course, famous in many twofers with his companion Laurel Hardy, but few people know, that he also made numerous films before that period. These silent movies have a rather poor quality and are only interesting for those who love to see early films by this great comic character.
In 1918 he got a contract at the Hal Roach studios for two years to replace Armando Novello, who played the clown Toto character, which films were canceled. The first film to be produced by Hal Roach featuring Stan Laurel was this Just Rambling Along. He made five films during this period. The film has some nice scenes, but the story is very thin and the gags not very funny. If you look carefully you can see that Stan's timing is okay, but the film itself won't stick in your mind forever. It is said that this is the oldest, still surviving film by Stan Laurel.

LESTER YOUNG TRIO: THE GIANTS 3

I found a copy of this record The Lester Young Trio with Nat "King" Cole and Buddy Rich in the series The Verve Collection. ( Verve 559 659 ). This CD contains recordings from March 1946 by three bebop musicians, that were brought together in a Norman Granz production. Although this trio is labeled as Lester Young Trio, I found it in the discographies as Nat "King" Cole/Lester Young/Buddy Rich - Giants 3 or short : The Giants 3.

The album contains 14 tracks, but, and that is a shame I think, the discographical information is rather poor. It was released as VSP-30 on a 12-inch LP in the VSP-series by Verve. The official discography reads:

The copy I have has some extra tracks, most alternative takes, but also an unreleased track titled Peg O'My Heart, I'll discuss later. The four last tracks are played by the Dexter Gordon Quintet featuring Harry "Sweets" Edison (tp) Dexter Gordon (ts) Nat "King" Cole (p) possibly Red Callender or Johnny Miller (b) and Clifford "Juicy" Owens (d). It is Dexter Gordon's first recording made late 1943 or July 1944 ( it isn't known exactly) session under his own name. As only Nat KIng Cole is present on this sessions it is strange to find it here: I've Found a New Baby - Rosetta - Sweet Lorraine and Blowed and Gone.
The tunes, recorded on this Norman Granz recording session now belong to the classics in jazz, well worth to have in your collection. Nat King Cole was already a very popular piano player who had several hits, like Straighten Up and Fly Right. Buddy Rich was one of the most sought after drummers from the 1940s and he played in the Count Basie Orchestra. When these recordings were made he had his own big band at the west coast, so he could easily sit in during these 1946 Hollywood recordings. For those who love the use of brushes, like me, know that Buddy used these in all tunes. He isn't present on the Peg O'My Heart tune: He is absent entirely, having gone to get something to eat, Lester explained later. This track was not on the original album. For Lester Young these recordings were one of the first recording sessions after he had left the army. These 14 month in the army had been a tragedy for Lester. Being an alcoholist, his dependence on drugs and his weak health made it a traumatic experience. One of the first tunes he recorded after his discharged of the army was a tune titled D.B. Blues ( = Detention Barracks Blues)
We all remember Lester Young wearing a pork pie hat and the way he holds his instrument, due to the fact that he twisted his mouthpiece of his saxophone. Just before he was forced to join the army he became the major figure in a short film titled Jammin' The Blues, I love to introduce to you later. I post it here just to introduce you to his sound.

As I told above, I will later make a blog about this great Gjon Mili film which includes a lot of more known jazz musicians from that period except Lester Young.

REIN DE GRAAFF TRIO met PETE CHRISTLIEB en FERDINAND POVEL in PORGY EN BESS.
Op zondag 2 november 2008 treedt het Rein de Graaff Trio op in Porgy en Bess, de huiskamer van de jazz in Terneuzen. Dit trio, dat al vele jaren samen optreedt bestaat uit Rein de Graaff aan de toetsen, Marius Beets op bas en Erik Ineke op slagwerk.

Rein de Graaff, die al heel wat schitterende concerten in Porgy en Bess op zijn naam heeft staan, komt deze keer met twee giganten op de tenorsax: Ferdinand Povel en Pete Christlieb.
Pete Christlieb is voor Rein een oude bekende; hj kent hem al vanaf de jaren zestig, toen hij richting New York vloog en daar speelde met de grootten van de jazz. Hij haalde hem ook verschillende keren naar Nederland, zoals in 1989 met Lew Tabackin en eind 1995 met David Fathead Newman. Bij die laatste gelegenheid speelde ook de Nederlandse tenorsxophonist Toon Roos mee. Ferdinand Povel stond onlangs nog in Porgy en Bess samen met John Marshall en hun spel maakte toen grote indruk op me. Dat Rein de Graaff het rustiger aandoet ( in plaats van vier series concerten, nu maar twee meer per jaar), is weinig te merken als je weet dat hij ook zijn herinneringen met de Giants of Jazz te boek heeft gesteld. Ik hoop zijn boek over Lee Morgan snel eens te kunnen lezen. Het concert van het Rein de Graafff Trio met als gasten Pete Christlieb en Ferdinand Povel vindt plaats in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen op zondag 2 november 2008 om 16.00 uur.
