Rein de Graaff- Dick Vennik Modal Soul

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Each country has its senior jazz musicians - jazz musicians who seem to have been playing as long as we remember and still are active with all their energy - who seem to stay young forever. In The Netherlands we have eminence gris Rein de Graaff, the bebop piano player who still tours with American veterans or lost heroes along Dutch venues.

Dick Vennick , tenor sax and flute player founded with Rein De Graaff their Rein De Graaff - Dick Vennik Quartet in 1964. The 1977 record I found is from that quartet. He is still active as a musician and had played, at the time of the recording of this Modal Soul LP with the Rob Agerbeek Kwintet, The European Jazz orchestra, the Slide Hampton Big Band and the Dusko Goykovich Big Band.

Eric Ineke is also such a veteran to be mentioned. Born in 1947 he studied percussion with John Engels and had played in 1977 with Henny Vonk, Ferdinand Povel, Rob Agerbeek and the Storktown Dixie Kids. He toured with musicians like Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin', Duke Jordan and Ben Webster to give some great names when the were in Holland. He is a member of the Rein De Graaff - Dick Vennik Quartet since 1971 and nowadays still active as the regular drummer in the Rein De Graaff Trio. Now he has his own group, the Eric Ineke Jazzxpress, with Rik Mol and Sjoerd Dijkhuizen in the front lines., two young promissing musicians.
As far as I know, Koos Serierse, the bass player, has retired from playing jazz. He started to play the bass in groups with Rob Madna, Frans Elsen, Rob Agerbeek, Herman Schoonderwalt, Wim Overgauw, Joe Henderson. Kenny Wheeler and was in the band that accompanied Toon Hermans, a well known Dutch standup comedian. He played with the Dutch Swing Colllege Band when Rein de Graaff needed a new bass player as his regular bass player Henk Haverhoek wanted to stop. Someone mentioned Koos Serierse as a posiblity to replace Henk. At first, Rein writes in his book Belevenissen in Bebop, I had some objections against Koos as playing the bass in the Dutch Swing Colege Band is something different then bass playing in our bop quartet. Koos came to a rehearsal and soon they learned that Koos Serierse was an excellent and skilled bass player who could play everything. He became a member of this quartet and became the regular bass player in the Rein de Graaff Trio until he retired and was replaced by Marius Beets. The Modal Soul LP was his first LP as a member of the quartet.

The LP I found is titled Modal Soul by the Rein De Graaff - Dick Vennik Quartet. It was recorded November 1977 for Timeless Records ( SJP 117). It contains five tracks: Sweet Basil, a Rein De Graaff composition, which title refers to a New York restaurant where Rein has some great remembrances to. The second one is Detour Ahead: a salut to Billie Holiday. The last track on the A-side is for Short Rainbow. This tune was written by one of Rein's friends in New York Jill McManus. Tne B-side has two own compositions. The first one is titled Lonely Hunter and has Dick Vennik on flute and the title tune Modal Soul closes this record. It is a composition of De Graaff and Dick Vennik and gives space to all members to show their personal conceptions.

I´m glad I found this early Rein De Graaff recording - it is the fourth one of this Rein De Graaff - Dick Vennik Quartet. I visited a lot of concerts of the Rein de Graaff Trio at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( southwest part of The Netherlands) during the last years - concerts with American veteran-bebop players in which Rein De Graaff and his trio normally have a roll as accompanists. I'm anxious to learn what concerts Rein has in mind for the next season and of course I hope to hear Eric Ineke's Jazzxpress - it was a pity I was unable to visit the concert he gave in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen March 2007.
