John Marshall-Ferdinand Povel European Quintet

The John Marshall / Ferdinand Povel European Quintet performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( the south west part of The Netherlands) on Sunday afternoon the 17th of February, 2008. It is labeled as one of the best quintets of the European jazz scene; well, that was wrong ....... it is the best !!
The John Marshall / Ferdinand Povel European Quintet features the American trumpet player John Marshall, now living in Germany, tenor saxophone player Ferdinand Povel, piano player Rob Van Bavel, Frans Van Geest on bass and Hans Dekker on drums. These European All Stars, as a club's leaflet suggested, played two lenghtly sets for the public, that enjoyed a great concert.
John Marshall and Ferdinand Povel know each other very well from performances and they played together for the very first time late 1990s in te John Marshall Quintet which resulted in a great CD titled Theme Of No Repeat (Organic Music ORGM 9719) with Doug Sides, who played in Porgy en Bess some month ago at the Roberta Gambarini concert. John Marshall, born in 1952, studied the trumpet at the age of 10 in Cold Spring Harbor (NY) and started his career playing in several New York bands, like the Jazz Composers Orchestra and the band of Ornette Coleman. He was also a member of the band of drummer Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton and the Mel Lewis Big Band. He founded in 1983 the John Marshall-Tardo Hammer Bopera House Quintet, before he came to Europe, where he settled in Cologne, Germany and became a member of the WDR (West Deutsche Rundfunk) Big Band. Ferdinand Povel, who celebrated his 61st birthday last week, the nestor of the band, was born in Haarlem, a city in the western part of The Netherlands. He learned to play the piano from his mother, who was a piano teacher, but learned himself to play the clarinet at first, before moving to the saxophone. He started to play in Germany with piano player Rob Franken, where he met Dusko Goykovich, Maynard Ferguson and stated to play the tenor sax in the orchestra of Kurt Edelhagen. He recorded with Goykovich, Maynard Ferguson, Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & Brass, Slide Hampton, John Marshall of course and a lot more European bands. Nowadays he teaches at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
The rhythm section, featuring Rob Van Bavel, a great soloist on the piano in tunes like Frisky, played in the second set, Frans Van Geest and Hans Dekker happened to be a strong element in this performance. Although some minor sound problems and arrangements in a wrong key, they greased the wheels for the two soloists with a steady base. The arrangements, John Marshall had brought along, were not the regular ones to expect from a quintet, that plays together only a few times a year. They played a great version of Kenny Dorham's Una Mas and the Dizzy Gillespy's killerdiller Two Bass Hit with a great role for Hans Dekker on drums. Some other seldon heard tunes were Doggie Boy by Tardo Hammer and That's Earl Brother composed by Dizzy Gillespie. Ferdinand Povel showed that he is a great ballad player in Ghost Of A Chance and John surprised by singing some tunes like Little Girl.
This John Marshall / Ferdinand Povell European Quintet proved at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club that they really earn the nomination as Best European Quintet, if such a prize would exist.
On the 7th of March Roy Hargrove will perform on this stage and, although I don't know the members of his Quintet, he might be nominated as one of the best ..... of the world.

Hoewel niet alles vlekkeloos verliep, er waren wat geluidsproblemen en arrangementen stonden in een verkeerde toonsoort, toch legden ze in ieder geval een stevige basis neer voor de solisten. De arrangementen die John Marshall had meegebracht, waren niet die van het soort twaalf in een dozijn, dat je zou verwachten bij een groep die maar een paar keer per jaar optreedt. Zo brachten ze een schitterende versie ten gehore van Kenny Dorham's Una Mas en een indrukwekkende versie van Dizzy Gillespie's killerdiller Two Bass Hit met een mooie rol voor Hans Dekker op slagwerk. Een paar andere, zelden vertolkte nummers waren Doggie Boy door Tardo Hammer gecomponeerd en That's Earl Brother, bekend geworden door Dizzy Gillespie. Ferdinand Povel liet zien dat hij met het grootste gemak een prachtige ballad kan neerzetten met nummers als Ghost Of A Chance. John verraste iedereen met zijn vocale inbreng in nummers als Little Girl.
Dit John Marshall / Ferdinand Povell European Quintet bewees tijdens het concert in Porgy en Bess Jazz Club, waarom ze genomineerd zouden moeten worden als beste Europese Jazz Kwintet, mocht zo'n prijs bestaan.
