Keep (it) Swinging: Baker's Holiday

The 1965 album Baker's Holiday played by Chet Baker and a nine-piece orchestra seems to be rather unknown to most Chet Baker admirers. It was recorded in May or June 1965 by Chet Baker on the flügelhorn (and vocal on some tracks), Alan Ross, Henry Freeman, Seldon Powell, Leon Cohen and Wilford Holcombe reeds, Everett Barkdale guitar, Hank Jones piano, Richard Davis bass and Connie Kay drums.

Although it is not Chet's best recordings, it certainly isn't his worst one. It is unique because Chet plays the flügelhorn all the time during this session, while he normally is playing his trumpet. The record is dedicated to Billie Holiday, the jazz vocalist he adored. Denise Jannah, a Dutch vocalist, has a succesfull theatre tour dedicated to the life of Billie Holiday this winter in The Netherlands and Belgium. The style of Billie Holiday's singing was so unique - do different, Chet says in the liner notes: She had a way of combining singing and talking a tune that was very intimate. One thing I really liked about her was that she never raised her voice. At least, I never heard her shout. The way of singing really reflected a lot of soul. Billie Holiday was Billie Holiday - that's all. She was great. she always did the best tunes, tunes that really lent themselves to her style of singing. She really didn't have a great voice, but what she did with it ....

The album was made with a studio group and that makes it sound a bit smooth, a bit over-arranged ( Thank goodness - no strings! ). It contains 10 tracks, all tunes once sung by Billie Holiday and a lot of it were never recorded by Chet Baker (again). For me, that's the only link with Billie Holiday, as this record is a typically Chet Baker release.

As far as I know Chet Baker never made a tribute album to another artist, so that makes these recordings unique. For me Travelin' Light and That Ole Devil Called Love sound great due to some fine solos.

Het album Baker's Holiday gespeeld door Chet Baker en een uit negen man bestaand orkest lijkt niet zo bekend bij de liefhebbers van Chet's muziek. Het werd opgenomen in mei of juni 1965 door Chet Baker op bügel (en uiteraard zingt hij op een paar nummers), Alan Ross, Henry Freeman, Seldon Powell, Leon Cohen en Wilford Holcombe op rieten, Everett Barkdale gitaar, Hank Jones piano, Richard Davis bas en Connie Kay slagwerk.

Hoewel het zeker niet Chet's beste plaat is, hoort het ook niet bij de stapel weg-er-mee. Het is een unieke plaat, vanwege het feit dat Chet Baker hier alleen maar bügel speelt, terwijl hij normaal trompet speelt. De plaat is gewijd aan Billie Holiday, de jazz-zangeres, die hij zo bewonderde en aan wie momenteel een succesvolle theatervoorstelling gewijd is door Denisse Jannah. De stijl van Billie Holiday noemt Chet Baker in het bijbehorende boekje, uniek: She had a way of combining singing and talking a tune that was very intimate. She really didn't have a great voice, but what she did with it .... (= Als ze een nummer vertolkte, dan kreeg dat iets persoonlijks, iets intiems, doordat ze praatte en zong tegelijk. Ze liet op die manier veel van zichzelf zien en waar ik veel van hield was dat ze nooit schreeuwde; althans ik heb dat nooit gehoord. Billie Holiday was gewoon Billie Holiday - meer niet. De liedjes die ze uitkoos pasten precies bij haar manier van zingen - ze had geen mooie stem, maar als ze zong ...... )

De muziek van de plaat is opgenomen door een studiogroep en dat maakt dat het allemaal iets te gelikt klinkt - te gearrangeerd (Gelukkig geen woud-met-violen!!). Er staan 10 stukken op, die stuk voor stuk door Billie ooit gezongen zijn; de meeste zijn door Chet Baker alleen voor deze plaat gespeeld en werden later nooit meer door hem opgenomen. Voor mij is de keuze van de nummers de enige link met Billie Holiday, waarmee ik wil zeggen dat het gewoon een Chet Baker plaat gebleven is en geen poging om Billie Holiday te imiteren.

Voor zover ik weet was deze plaat de enige keer dat Chet Baker een zgn. Tribute To ... plaat maakte en dat maakt deze plaat uniek. Voor mij zijn Travelin' Light en That Ole Devil Called Love prachtige uitvoeringen dankzij een paar goede solo's.

DOCTOR JAZZ REUNIE: De 87ste Doctor Jazz Reunie voor lezer van het blad Doctor Jazz Magazine één van de hoogtepunten van het jaar en staat gepland voor 29 maart 2008 in het WICC-gebouw in Wageningen. Er is een grote platenbeurs en 's middags treden vijf orkesten op:

Ons Genoegen, Joseph Lam Jazzband, Andor's Jazzband, Metropolitan Roof Orchestra en de Jay Jays Border Jazzmen. Uiteraard zal ik zelf ook op de platenbeurs zijn, dus wie weet komen we elkaar tegen. De volgende reunie zal op 11 oktober 2008 zijn. Deze week zal ik ook de (ver)nieuw(d)e Doctor Jazz volume 200 bespreken.
