The Kid

The film, The Kid, is one of those all times Chaplin classics. It's a picture with a smile - and perhaps a tear; Well said as it is certainly not a real scream. The film was made in 1921 for the Mutual Film Company and became a great success.

It's the story about an abandoned child, that grows up at the house of The Tramp, played by Chaplin. The Kid grows up into an efficient housekeeper and an enthusiastic business partner; when he is at the age of five he throws stones through windows, so The Tramp can use some money by repairing the windows as a glazier.

The child becomes ill and the doctor visits the house. He thinks the child should be into well fare. The woman, who abandoned the child is now a great artist and finds out that the Kid is her child and, to make this preview not too long, it ends all as a good story ought to end: the child is reunited with his real mother, now a rich woman of course.

It's interesting to see the unpaved streets and the primitive gas lightning.

The film has a playing time of about 45 minutes and it is, of course, a silent movie as sound was not used in film before the end of the 1920s.

The film is part of a great colection of reissued Chaplin films, called the Chaplin Collection.

De film, The Kid, is één van die Chaplin klassiekers, die je gezien moet hebben. De film werd gemaakt in 1921 door de Mutual Film Company. Het is een film met een glimlach, en misschien een traan - zo begint de film en dat klopt ook wel: het is in ieder geval geen dijenkletser.

De film gaat over een vondeling, die opgroeid in het huis van The Tramp, een landloper, meesterlijk gespeeld door Chaplin. The Kid, het jongetje, groeit op bij The Tramp en leert het huishouden en mee te helpen met geld te verdienen. Dat laatste gaat als volgt: De Kid gooit stenen door ramen, die dan weer gemaakt kunnen worden door Chaplin, die als glazenier zijn brood verdient. Een prima combinatie dus.

Het kind wordt ziek en de dokter vindt dat hij niet in het oude huisje kan blijven. De vrouw, die het kind eerder te vondeling had gelegd, is ondertussen een beroemd actrice geworden en komt te weten dat The Kid haar zoontje is. Om het verhaal nu niet helemaal te verklappen - het eindigt in ieder geval zoals een goed verhaal hoort te eindigen. Moeder en kind worden weer verenigd en het kan opgroeien in een rijk huishouden.

Het is interessant om te zien hoe in 1921 de straten in de oude wijken nog onverhard waren en het gebruik van de primitieve gasverlichting.

De film duurt zo'n drie kwartier en is uiteraard een stomme film, aangezien geluid pas eind jaren twintig aan film toegevoegd kon worden.

De film is onderdeel van een prachtige serie, getiteld The Chaplin Collection.
