LESTER YOUNG TRIO: drie kanjers

Ik vond de CD The Lester Young Trio with Nat "King" Cole and Buddy Rich in de serie The Verve Collection. ( Verve 559 659 ). Deze plaat bevat opnamen uit maart 1946 door drie bebop-muzikanten, die samengebracht waren door Norman Granz. Hoewel het trio op de plaat het Lester Young Trio genoemd wordt vond ik ook nog andere benamingen, zoals Nat "King" Cole/Lester Young/Buddy Rich - Giants 3 of kortweg: The Giants 3; drie kanjers dus .......

In de discografie staat het volgende vermeld:

Op de plaat staan nog een aantal opnamen extra, waarschijnlijk extra takes en een nummer, Peg O'My Heart, waarover later meer. De laatste vier titels zijn gespeeld door het Dexter Gordon Quintet met Harry "Sweets" Edison op trompet, Dexter Gordon, tenorsax, Nat "King" Cole piano, Red Callender of Johnny Miller op bas en Clifford "Juicy" Owens op slagwerk. Die opnamen vonden plaats eind 1943 of juli 1944, hier spreken de discografen zich niet duidelijk over uit. Vreemd eigenlijk dat deze vier nummers met Dexter Gordon's eerste opnamen onder eigen naam, hier op deze plaat staan - alleen Nat King Cole is het enige gemeenschappelijk element: I've Found a New Baby - Rosetta - Sweet Lorraine en Blowed and Gone.

De titels, opgenomen tijdens de Norman Granz sessie behoren nu tot de klassieken van de jazz en zouden in elke serieuze jazzverzameling thuis moeten horen. Nat King Cole was toen al een gevierd pianist en had al een aantal hits op zijn naam staan, zoals Straighten Up and Fly Right. Buddy Rich was een veelgevraagd begeleider op slagwerk en speelde o.a. bij Count Basie. Toen deze opnamen gemaakt werden had hij zijn eigen orkest, dat aan de westkust speelde en aangezien de Norman Granz opnamen in Hollywood plaatsvonden, kon hij acte de presence geven. Hij speelt op alle nummers bijna alleen maar met de brushes, dus iedereen die, net als ik, genoten heeft vorige week bij Jeff Hamilton, heeft nu wat om op zijn lijstje voor de Sint te schrijven. Alleen bij het nummer Peg o'My Heart is hij niet aanwezig: He is absent entirely, having gone to get something to eat: verkaarde Lester Young later - hij was even een hapje eten ....... Dit nummer werd wel gelukkig wel opgenomen, maar verscheen niet op de oorspronkelijke LP.

Voor Lester Young was deze opnamesessie één van de eerste nadat hij uit militaire dienst ontslagen was. De 14 maanden dat hij onder de wapenen was waren voor hem een ramp geweest. Door zijn zwakke gezondheid, zijn drankgebruik, alcoholisme en drugsverslaving hadden zijn diensttijd tot een traumatische ervaring gemaakt. Eén van de eerste nummers, voor deze Norman sessie opgenomen, was dan ook getiteld D.B. Blues ( = Detention Barracks) (= Gevangenisbarakken)
We kennen Lester Young allemaal van zijn Italiaanse pork pie hoed ( vandaar ook de toren van Pisa voor op de hoes) en aan het feit dat hij zijn saxofoon altijd schuin hield omdat hij zijn mondstuk een kwartslag gedraaid had als hij speelde. Vlak voordat hij gedwongen werd om zich te melden voor de militaire dienst ( muzikanten konden nog wel eens door de mazen van het net glippen omdat ze niet altijd een vaste woon- en verblijfplaats hadden) speelde hij in de film Jammin' The Blues. Ik wil hiervan een fragment laten zien.

De film Jammin' The Blues gemaakt door Gjon Mili is erg mooi gemaakt en er spelen nog allerlei andere jazzmusici in mee, behalve Lester Young; vandaar dat ik hierover later in een meer zal vertellen.

Fifty years ago, on the 28th of October 1958, two skilled jazz men, Milt Jackson and Cannonball Adderley joined for the very first time into the Riverside studios in New York City. During the second half of the 1950s this kind of recordings were very popular: two great names, together into the studio, backed by an all-star rhythm session. There are dozens of examples, like Stan Getz and Bob Brookmeyer - Stan Getz and J. J. Johnson - Bags and Trane - Hamp and Getz - Mulligan meets Monk and Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins.
One of those fifties still sounds fresh .......

I found a copy of this record The Lester Young Trio with Nat "King" Cole and Buddy Rich in the series The Verve Collection. ( Verve 559 659 ). This CD contains recordings from March 1946 by three bebop musicians, that were brought together in a Norman Granz production. Although this trio is labeled as Lester Young Trio, I found it in the discographies as Nat "King" Cole/Lester Young/Buddy Rich - Giants 3 or short : The Giants 3.

The album contains 14 tracks, but, and that is a shame I think, the discographical information is rather poor. It was released as VSP-30 on a 12-inch LP in the VSP-series by Verve. The official discography reads:

The copy I have has some extra tracks, most alternative takes, but also an unreleased track titled Peg O'My Heart, I'll discuss later. The four last tracks are played by the Dexter Gordon Quintet featuring Harry "Sweets" Edison (tp) Dexter Gordon (ts) Nat "King" Cole (p) possibly Red Callender or Johnny Miller (b) and Clifford "Juicy" Owens (d). It is Dexter Gordon's first recording made late 1943 or July 1944 ( it isn't known exactly) session under his own name. As only Nat KIng Cole is present on this sessions it is strange to find it here: I've Found a New Baby - Rosetta - Sweet Lorraine and Blowed and Gone.
The tunes, recorded on this Norman Granz recording session now belong to the classics in jazz, well worth to have in your collection. Nat King Cole was already a very popular piano player who had several hits, like Straighten Up and Fly Right. Buddy Rich was one of the most sought after drummers from the 1940s and he played in the Count Basie Orchestra. When these recordings were made he had his own big band at the west coast, so he could easily sit in during these 1946 Hollywood recordings. For those who love the use of brushes, like me, know that Buddy used these in all tunes. He isn't present on the Peg O'My Heart tune: He is absent entirely, having gone to get something to eat, Lester explained later. This track was not on the original album. For Lester Young these recordings were one of the first recording sessions after he had left the army. These 14 month in the army had been a tragedy for Lester. Being an alcoholist, his dependence on drugs and his weak health made it a traumatic experience. One of the first tunes he recorded after his discharged of the army was a tune titled D.B. Blues ( = Detention Barracks Blues)
We all remember Lester Young wearing a pork pie hat and the way he holds his instrument, due to the fact that he twisted his mouthpiece of his saxophone. Just before he was forced to join the army he became the major figure in a short film titled Jammin' The Blues, I love to introduce to you later. I post it here just to introduce you to his sound.

As I told above, I will later make a blog about this great Gjon Mili film which includes a lot of more known jazz musicians from that period except Lester Young.

REIN DE GRAAFF TRIO met PETE CHRISTLIEB en FERDINAND POVEL in PORGY EN BESS.
Op zondag 2 november 2008 treedt het Rein de Graaff Trio op in Porgy en Bess, de huiskamer van de jazz in Terneuzen. Dit trio, dat al vele jaren samen optreedt bestaat uit Rein de Graaff aan de toetsen, Marius Beets op bas en Erik Ineke op slagwerk.

Rein de Graaff, die al heel wat schitterende concerten in Porgy en Bess op zijn naam heeft staan, komt deze keer met twee giganten op de tenorsax: Ferdinand Povel en Pete Christlieb.
Pete Christlieb is voor Rein een oude bekende; hj kent hem al vanaf de jaren zestig, toen hij richting New York vloog en daar speelde met de grootten van de jazz. Hij haalde hem ook verschillende keren naar Nederland, zoals in 1989 met Lew Tabackin en eind 1995 met David Fathead Newman. Bij die laatste gelegenheid speelde ook de Nederlandse tenorsxophonist Toon Roos mee. Ferdinand Povel stond onlangs nog in Porgy en Bess samen met John Marshall en hun spel maakte toen grote indruk op me. Dat Rein de Graaff het rustiger aandoet ( in plaats van vier series concerten, nu maar twee meer per jaar), is weinig te merken als je weet dat hij ook zijn herinneringen met de Giants of Jazz te boek heeft gesteld. Ik hoop zijn boek over Lee Morgan snel eens te kunnen lezen. Het concert van het Rein de Graafff Trio met als gasten Pete Christlieb en Ferdinand Povel vindt plaats in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen op zondag 2 november 2008 om 16.00 uur.

Oscar Peterson: the vocal styling

Today a contribution by guest contributor Arnold van Kampen, Jazz criticus and author of the Oscar Peterson discography, about the vocal styling Oscar Peterson, as a result of my contribution about Oscar Peterson some times ago.

Oscar made several vocal recordings, not only on the album Romances, but also on an album dedicated to Nat King Cole after he passed away in February 1965. It is a fact that Oscar and Nat were close friends and the legendary words spoken are true: If you play the piano; I will sing.

Oscar and Nat made that appointment due to the fact that both voices sounded rather the same. Oscar respected this appointment and recorded With Respect To Nat released by Mercury/Limelight after Nat passed away. The album Romance, subtitled The Vocal Styling of Oscar Peterson has been released on a Japanese Verve CD. After Oscar published the album With Respect To Nat he made two records on which he sings too: 1. Terry's Tune, a record made by Pablo (Japan) where he plays the solo piano and sings on some tracks. 2. The Personal Touch, an American Pablo record, also released on CD, but, sorry to say, this might be, in my opinion, Oscar's worst record he ever made, since his first recordings in 1944.
Oscar Peterson made a lot of records. Some people say 100, others double that, but actually he made a lot more. He recorded with all great names in jazz; from Louis Armstrong up to Lester Young and from Benny Carter up to Sarah Vaughan. He also was a steady factor at the Jazz At The Philharmonic tours, concerts that are available on LPs and CDs. It is a fact that he was a sought after accompanist, always serving the soloists. On other recordings he was the co-leader, like on the great Milt Jackson album Very Tall. As the compiler of the Oscar Peterson discography I can tell you on good authority that Oscar made more then 500 records, since he started his career in 1944. New material is still found and old tapes are discovered. But few people know that a lot of releases were made exclusively for Japan or Canada. One of those great Japanese releases is a registration of a concert, titled Tokyo 1964 and in Canada a second recording was released from his famous composition The Canadiana Suite, this time with a great orchestra on the CBC label. I guess Oscar made a total number of ca. 750 records, on 78rpm, 45rpm, LPs, CDs, LDs (= Laser Discs) and DVDs.

Oscar liked his album My Favorite Instrument on the MPS-label the best, released in the series Exclusively For My Friends. You can hear Oscar playing solo, but personally I prefer another solo-record Tracks, also on MPS. His best trio recordings, with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums are his The London House Sessions, a set, now out of print, with live recordings of that trio in The London House in Chicago, in the summer of 1961.

Vandaag een bijdrage van gastredacteur Arnold van Kampen, Jazz criticus en auteur van de Oscar Peterson discography, over de de zingende Oscar Peterson, naar aanleiding van mijn eerdere bijdrage over Oscar Peterson een tijdje geleden.

Oscar heeft meerdere platen gemaakt waarop hij zingt, niet alleen op Romance maar ook op zijn plaat die aan Nat King Cole was opgedragen, nadat deze overleed. Overigens was Oscar bevriend met Nat en de legendarische afspraak tussen beiden: "Als jij nou blijft pianospelen, dan blijf ik zingen" berust op waarheid!
Oscar en Nat maakten die afspraak omdat Oscar's stem zoveel op die van Nat leek. Hij heeft zich ook aan die afspraak gehouden en pas na het overlijden van Nat weer een zangplaat gemaakt: "With Respect to Nat" (inmiddels ook op cd op Mercury/Limelight). Romance (The vocal styling of Oscar Peterson) is inmiddels op een Japanse Verve cd uitgebracht. Na "With respect to Nat" heeft Oscar nog twee platen gemaakt waarop hij vocaal te horen is: 1. "Terry's Tune" een plaat die uitsluitend in Japan (op Japanse Pablo) verkrijgbaar is geweest, waarop Oscar solo speelt en op een aantal nummers zingt. 2. "The personal touch" op Amerikaanse Pablo, inmiddels ook uit op cd en volgens mij de allerslechtste plaat die Oscar ooit gedurende zijn platencarriére, die in 1944 begon, heeft gemaakt. Over zijn platenoevre wordt meestal maar een slag geslagen, 100, 200, maar in werkelijkheid heeft Oscar veel meer platen gemaakt. Allereerst maakte hij opnamen met vrijwel alle grote namen in de jazz, van Louis Armstrong tot Lester Young en van Benny Carter tot Sarah Vaughan, daarnaast was hij jarenlang een vaste waarde tijdens de Jazz at the Philharmonic toernee's en ook op die platen (en cd's) horen we hem. Hij was zondermeer de beste begeleider in de jazz, omdat hij zich altijd "dienend" opstelde voor degene met wie hij platen maakte. Maar er bestaan ook platen waarop Oscar co-leader is, zoals ondermeer zijn prachtplaten met Milt Jackson "Very Tall". Verder zijn van verschillende platensessies meerdere platen getrokken. Omdat ik een complete discografie van Oscar Peterson heb samengesteld kan ik met betrouwbaarheid vertellen dat Oscar meer dan 500 platensessies (al dan niet onder eigen naam) heeft gemaakt, vanaf 1944. Het aantal groeit nog steeds en steeds meer oud materiaal wordt ontdekt. Minder bekend is dat er ook platen zijn die uitsluitend in Japan en Canada zijn uitgegeven.

Zo is in Japan het voortreffelijke concert "Tokyo 1964" (dubbel-lp en dubbel-cd op Pablo) verschenen en is er in Canada een tweede opname van zijn beroemde compositie "The Canadiana Suite" op de plaat gezet, echter ditmaal met groot orkest (label CBC). Het totaal aantal uitgebrachte platen, cd's, ld's (laserdiscs) en dvd's schat ik op rond 750. Oscar vond zelf zijn plaat (ook op cd) "My favorite instrument" op MPS in de serie "Exclusively for my friends" zijn beste. Op deze plaat is Oscar solo te horen, persoonlijk vind ik zijn andere solo-plaat "Tracks" ook op MPS nog iets beter als het om zijn soloplaten gaat. Mijn favoriete opnamen (met het legendarische trio met Ray Brown op bas en Ed Thigpen op drums) zijn "The London House Sessions" een (inmiddels out of print box set) met live opnamen van dit trio in de zomer van 1961 in The London House in Chicago.
