Peter Herbolzheimer is rather unknown outside Germany and that is underserved as he is one the leading big band composers, arrangers and for decades he belongs with his band, the Rhythm Combination & Brass to the best their is in Europe. I found a compilation, released due to the 25th birthday of his band, that gives a great opportunity to be introduced to his music. (Koala Records CD P 26 )

Peter Herbolzheimer was born in Bucharest, Romania, but moved to Detroit where he started playing the guitar. When he returned to Europe and settled in Germany he went to the Neurenberg School of Music and studied trombone. He played in several orchestras and in 1969 he founded his own big band, called the Rhythm Combination & Brass. In this band, some great names have found a place, like Herb Geller, Derek Watkins, Ack Van Rooijen, Bart Van Lier and Art Farmer. In 1972 he was invited to make the music for the Olympic Games in Munich , which indicates how important his band was in Germany.

This 2CD contains music from two decades, the 1980s and the 1990s. In the 1980s Peter Herbolzheimer rediscovered the classical swing tunes from the 1930s and recorded it, of course transformed using modern arrangements. One of these tunes is the first track, Four Brothers, arranged by Jerry Van Rooijen, which was only played one time in public. During that concert Wilton Gaynair, a sax player, fainted on stage and became paralysed. He died a few months later.

Peter Herbolzheimer is tamelijk onbekend buiten Duitsland en dat is onterecht, aangezien hij één van de leidende componisten en arrangeurs is en met zijn band, the Rhythm Combination & Brass behoort tot het beste wat Europa op jazzgebied te bieden heeft. Ik vond een dubbel CD, uitgebracht vanwege het 25 jarig bestaan van de band, met daarin een overzicht van nummers uit de jaren tachtig en negentig van de vorige eeuw; een prachtige kans om kennis te maken met deze band. (Koala Records CD P 26 )
Peter Herbolzheimer werd geboren in Boekarest, Roemenië, en verhuisde al jong naar Detroit, waar hij gitaar speelde. Terug in Europa studeerde hij trombone aan het Conservatorium van Neurenberg en speelde in de grote Duitse orkesten uit die tijd. In 1969 richtte hij zijn eigen orkest op, The Rhythm Combination & Brass. In deze band vinden we een aantal grote namen terug, zoals die van Herb Geller, Derek Watkins, Ack Van Rooijen, Bart Van Lier en Art Farmer. In 1972 werd hij uitgekozen om de muziek voor de Olympische Spelen in München te maken, hetgeen aangeeft hoe hoog het orkest in Duitsland stond aangeschreven.
Deze dubbel CD omvat 20 jaar, de jaren tachtig en negentig, waarin Peter Herbolzheimer het klassieke swingrepertoire herontdekte en omvormde tot zijn muziek met moderne arrangementen. Eén van die nummers is Four Brothers, gearrangeerd door onze eigen Jerry Van Rooijen, dat slechts één keer in het openbaar gespeeld is. Tijdens dit optreden zakte een saxofonist, Wilton Gaynair, in elkaar, raakte verlamd en stierf het daaropvolgende jaar. Hij heeft na dit concert nooit meer kunnen spelen.

Ik vond een fragment van een recent optreden van de band van Peter Herbolzheimer, waarin je kunt kennismaken met zijn muziek. Vooral doen !!
