Tom Marion Sweet Hollywaiians - O Surdato Nnammurato

It is good to know that there are still bands that love to keep the sounds of the first half of the XXth century alive. One of those bands is the Sweet Hollywaiians, a group of dedicated young Japanese musicians, that play the 1920's and 1930's Old Time Jazz, Puerto Rican, Strings Band, Hawaiian, Italian Swing music, as the cover of one of their albums reads. This Japanese group released two albums within a short period: Hula Girl released by Sweet Strings ( ss-1007) and 'O Surdato 'Nnammurato by Tom Marion and his Sweet Hollywaiians - released by Radio Days Records. ( RDR-101 ). Today I'll review the former: 'O Surdato 'Nnammurato by Tom Marion and his Sweet Hollywaiians.
This Cd contains recordings made in September 2006 at the Sweet Strings studio in Osaka (Japan) and features the four regular members Tomotaka Matsui, Hawaiian Steel Guitar, guitar and ukulele - Nobumasa Takada, who plays ukulele, tenor banjo and guitar - Takashi Nakayama on guitar and mandoline and Kohichi Tsutsumishita, who plays the string bass. Special guest and arranger is Tom Marion, who plays all kinds of string instruments, like guitar, banjo and the mandola and mandocello; hybrids of the mandoline I guess. He also sings on Idolizing, Home and At Sundown. He played on some tracks of R. Crumb's 1993 album Chasin' Rainbows and in groups like the Bo Grumpus band of Craig Ventresco. He is also a member of Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys and I guess I need to make a contribution about that great band in one of my previous Keepswinging blogs. Tom Marion, Italian born, is reponsible for the arrangements and he really did a good job. The tunes are a mix of traditionals, like Idolizing, made famous by the Jean Goldkette band in 1926, featuring Bix Beiderbecke and Eddie Lang, whose guitar playing he "idolizes", Sweet Sue, At Sundown ( played by The Clicquot Club Eskimos ) or the 1931 version of Home. Some tunes are very special for Tom Marion, like Dreaming of You, a tune he first heard during his cooperation with Robert Crumb. The tune Tarantola is a tune he composed, with the help of Tom Marotta when he was seven years old (!). The title of the CD 'O Surdato 'Nnammurato, sounds Japanese, but refers to a 1915 Neapolitan tune. When Tom Marion was a kid he learned the old Italian songs from his grandfather.Tom sings the tune in the Neapolitan dialect. A remarkable track !!
The Sweet Hollywaiians has planned a tour to California the first half of October. These are the places where they will perform, so if you are in that region check your diary: The Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles, - Boulevard Music in Culver City - Coffee Gallery Backstage and The Speisekammer in Alameda - Make-out Room, The Rite Spot and The Knockout in San Francisco. If you're not there - find yourself a copy of this great album !! When will this great group visit Europe?
I found two fragments of Tom Marion and his Sweet Hollywaiians I love to share with you: Idolizing and Brown Eyes, Why Are You Blue, a great, but rather unknown dance tune from the 1920s - one of my favorite tunes from the album.

Het is goed te weten dat er, ook aan de andere kant van de wereld, bands zijn die het belangrijk vinden dat de muziek uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw levend gehouden wordt. Eén van die bands is de Sweet Hollywaiians, een groep jonge Japanse musici, die de zogenaamde Old Time Jazz, Puetro Rican, Strings Band, Hawaiian, Italian, Swing muziek (zoals opgesomd wordt op de hoes van één van hun platen) uit de jaren twintig en dertig doen herleven. Ik kwam bij toeval deze Japanse groep, uit de omgeving van Osaka (Japan) op het spoor. Ze brachten onlangs twee CDs uit: Hula Girl - Sweet Hollywaiians op het Sweet Strings label ( ss-1007) en 'O Surdato 'Nnammurato door Tom Marion and his Sweet Hollywaiians - uitgebracht op het label Radio Days Records. ( RDR-101 ). Vandaag alle aandacht voor hun eerstgenoemde CD met de onuitspreekbare titel (uitspreken alleen op eigen risico): 'O Surdato 'Nnammurato by Tom Marion and his Sweet Hollywaiians.
Deze plaat bevat opnamen gemaakt in de Sweet Strings studio in Osaka (Japan) uit september 2006. De groep bestaat uit de vier reguliere leden van de Sweet Hollywaiians, namelijk Tomotaka Matsui op Hawaï steel gitaar, gitaar en ukulele - Nobumasa Takada, die ukulele, tenor banjo en gitaar speelt - Takashi Nakayama op gitaar en mandoline en Kohichi Tsutsumishita, die bas speelt. Thanks a lot for sharing the video performances featuring this great band. I should like to attend a live performance by the band, definitely!
