Les Tresors du Jazz

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
I got my copy, thank goodness .... I got it !!
Last week my record store received the new Les Tresors du Jazz 10 CD box, titled 1956. Now it's mine.
Let's be honest; normally I don't like compilation CDs. If you visit a record shop or a filling station or department store, you'll find dozens of cheap jazz compilation: The Best of ......, or Jazz For Lovers or Aangenaam ... Jazz. Well the last one, Aangenaam ... Jazz is in fact an advertisement double CD, to promote Dutch jazz artists, so you won't find it abroad; it gives discount on new jazz releases. In fact, I think, they should share such an album for free. The first two mentioned types of compilation albums are, normally, dumped, right-free material, that shouldn't be labeled as The Best of ... , and if you are really in love, you don't need jazz to express that ( maybe it helps, but that's another discussion ....). You can recognize these releases, because they have normally NO discographical information at all; that's why I dislike and distrust compilation CDs.

There are some exceptions that proves the rules. Like the Les Tresors du Jazz 10-CD boxes. Yesterday I listened to the first CD ( volume 56) and the 6th one (volume 61). There is no connection with the fact that this box contains 1956-material and the first volume that is labeled as volume 56; it is the 56th CD in a series of CD releases. What is the idea behind these compilations? They are compiled by two French dedicated jazz lovers, André Francois and Jean Schwarz. They pooled their passion, the liner notes read,
their knowledge and their archives to constitute this very special and remarkable anthology. Special, because this is the first time that a real chronological History of Jazz has been presented on record through a selection of its rarities and outstanding masterpieces.

The Les Tresors du Jazz - 1956 box contains 132 tracks on 10 CDs, chronological arranged. It is amazing to learn what recordings André Francois and Jean Schwarz have selected. The first CD in this box, 1956, contains tunes, that were recorded between the 4th and the 27th of January 1956. Volume 56 contains 12 tracks of high standard tunes, featuring the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet, the Milt Jackson Quintet, the Martial Solal Quartet with Fats Sadi ( what a surprise), the Modern Jazz Sextet, the Teddy Charles Tentet ( whow !!), the West Coast Versus East Coast session, The Buddy Shank - Bob Cooper Quartet ( ! ), The Louis Armstrong All Stars, Hampton Hawes Trio, The Gerry Mulligan Sextet and, last but not least The Art Tatum trio. Great music - all tracks are well chosen, well known standards, but also unknown releases, not selected because they are rare, but because they contain seldon heard great jazz. In short: A great selection, with, in my case, enough new material to justify this purchase. And keep in mind that this is only the first CD of this great box.
And for me very important: All boxes contain effective discographical information and commends in, both French as English. Great !!

I can recommend this 1956 Les Tresors du Jazz box ( and the 4 previous "year" boxes that started with 1952 onwards ( all have 10 cd's, except 1952 that has 5 )) without any restriction for new jazz lovers and experienced jazz connoisseurs.
The compilers of Les Tresors Du Jazz have also compiled other great box sets
with jazz from the earliest jazz history (1898 - 1943 and 1944 - 1951), boxes titled L'Historie du Jazz Vocal, L'Historie du Piano Jazz, L'Historie des Big Bands and recently released L 'Histoire du saxophone Jazz. I haven't heard these selections yet, but I guess they are from that same high level: well selected high standard jazz tunes. Recommended for all jazz collectors !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

The Best of ......, of Jazz For Lovers of Aangenaam ... Jazz.

They pooled their passion, staat er in het bijbehorende boekje, their knowledge and their archives to constitute this very special and remarkable anthology. Special, because this is the first time that a real chronological History of Jazz has been presented on record through a selection of its rarities and outstanding masterpieces.
