This is the first 2013 Keep (it) Swinging newsletter with some links to highlights published in January 2013.

ARTICLE: Marshall Brown and George Wein joined, spring 1958, within a few weeks span, dozens of auditions .. "they hopscotched Europe conducting auditions on a back-braking schedule."  They heard a hundred young talented musicians. "If we were able to take everyone who impressed us, we’d have 13 trumpets, 9 trombones … that kind of band ..." Marshall Brown told the journalists at the airport when they returned from their search for members of their band. It was a pity that a young talented Spanish piano player was not available - the Swiss piano player George Gruntz, who passed away a couple of weeks ago, was invited. The guitar player was found in the States - a political refugee, a talent on his instrument. Dutch bass player Ruud Jacobs represented The Netherlands. Newport '58: The rhythm section of the Babel's Band
ARTIKEL: Marshall Brown en George Wein kregen in het voorjaar van 1958 binnen een paar weken, they hopscotched Europe conducting auditions on a back-braking schedule, tijdens de tientallen Europese audities, een honderdtal muzikanten voor hun neus.  If we were able to take everyone who impressed us, we’d have 13 trumpets, 9 trombones … that kind of band ... liet Marshall de journalisten bij terugkomst weten.

CONCERT: Anton Goudsmit and the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra in Porgy en Bess
REVIEW: Fred Hersch Trio: Alive at the Vanguard : Fred Hersch latest album must have been one of his best ...... A year ago he performed at the Village Vanguard in New York City for a week and a selection of these sets were released in a great 2cd album Fred Hersch Trio - Alive at the Vanguard (PM 2159) .... Alive ... not Live .... more then a detail!

Jeff Holmes: On One's One :  Jeff Holmes is one of those jazz musicians that have made a career in jazz, as a trumpet player, as a pianist, educator, composer, arranger,.. you name it ... but still unknown in this part of the world.  He can be heard in several albums, but Of One's Own, a telling title, is his first one in a small setting ........  This Of One's Own, in which he plays  funny, quirky, personal jazz ( as piano player Arturo O' Farrill labels it) could become an introduction to his music in this part of the world. A great album!

LIBRO:
Tributo a Oscar Alemán

BOOK: Guillermo Iacona met Oscar Alemán in the 1960s and took guitar lessons. He was invited to play with Oscar three times at venues like the Santa Maria del Buen Ayre Theatre in Buenos Aires. They became close friends. Guillermo's dream was, to publish a book about his idol, and to share his recollections about this legendary Argentine guitar player and entertainer with his friends. He informed me at set times about the process. He talked to Alemáns widow Carmen Vallejo and his granddaughter Jorgelina Alemán and people who had known Oscar well. Before the book was finished Guillermo passed aweay, but his sons José and Estamislao Iacona finished their fater's life's work and published it - The book contains dozens of unpublished black and white photos - a must have for all jazz fans who love to have Oscar in their bookcase: Tribute to Oscar Alemán

Fred Hersch speelt Jobim

Fred Hersch plays Jobim ( English) Fred Hersch speelt Jobim ( Nederlands)

FRED HERSCH SPEELT JOBIM
Hans Koert

Fred Hersch ( Northsea Jazzfestival ( Rotterdam) Juli 2009 (foto: Hans Koert)

Fred ontmoette Edison tijdens een schnabbel in een New Yorkse club Cachaca: I was lucky to be taught on the bandstand by a real master: Edison Machado. I am a huge fan of chorinhos - the equivalent of Brazilian ragtime - and have learned many of them and written some of my own.

Reading through so much of his music reinforced my belief that Jobim is one of the great composers of the 20th century regardless of genre. His bittersweet harmonies, fabulous melodies and superb craftsmanship are evident in everything he writes.

Hi Hans, thanks for alerting me and for the very nice comments about the CD. All the best to you, Fred

Fred Hersch plays Jobim

FRED HERSCH PLAYS JOBIM
Hans Koert

Fred Hersch is one of those jazz piano players who fascinate me. Although he plays and records since the early 1980s I learned about him and his music only a few years ago, thanks to the documentary Let Yourself Goes - The lives of Fred Hersch - a fascinating portrait of a gifted musician in his fight agains his HIV-infection.
Last year I heard him in a concert with his Fred Hersch Trio + 2 at the North Sea Jazz Festival, in Rotterdam. For this performance Fred had invited two horn players, Ralph Alessi on trumpet and flugelhorn and Tony Malaby on tenor saxophone. The photos used in this contribution are made, with a simple digital camera, during this concert.

Last year Fred released a solo album dedicated to Antonio Carlos Jobim. But few people won't have ever heard the music of Jobim. His bossa nova styled songs like the Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado or Meditation, to list some well known themes, are well known and where all part of the pop charts of the 1960s. The bossa nova, a mix of Brazilian music and jazz, to keep it simply, was introduced by musicians like Astrud Gilberto, Charlie Byrd, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz. I told about this period in a contribution about Eliane Elias' tribute to 50 years Bossa Nova

Cover of the album: Fred Hersch plays Jobim

In the liner notes Fred tells that he was introduced to the Bossa Nova by a local guitar player Kenny Poole. This men died a few years ago and I found a fragment where you can here him playing.

He learned to play the Brazilian rhythms by drummer Edison Machado. He was one of the first to transfer the rhythms of the Bossa Nova, the Samba, and the Baiao to the drum set. He met Edison at a gig at the New York club Cachaca: I was lucky to be taught on the bandstand by a real master: Edison Machado. During Fred's career he visited Brasil three times and played with Leny Andrade, the great Brazilian singer who often played with the Sergo Mendes band Sexteto Bossa Rio. In Brazil Fred Hersch learned more about Choro. I am a huge fan of chorinhos - the equivalent of Brazilian ragtime - and have learned many of them and written some of my own.

Around 1870 in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil) a new musical style emerged that would become one of the most creative musical manifestations in Brazil. Choro was primarily an instrumental form, and to a North American ear it might sound a little like a small Dixieland jazz combo playing with strange rhythms, extreme melodic leaps, unexpected modulations, and occasional breakneck tempos. Interestingly, choro's development in Brazil slightly predated the rise of ragtime and jazz in North America. Choro and jazz were both characterized in part by their use of improvisation and African-derived musical elements. ( source: Choro: Improvisation South of New Orleans in The Billboard Book of Brazilian Music by Chris McGowan and Ricardo Pessanha p. 151 )

Fred Hersch at the North Sea Jazz Festival (Rotterdam) ( July 2009) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

In the album Fred Hersch plays Jobim Fred didn't want to play only the well known tunes, already listed above, but also some of the lesser known Jobim compositions. One of those less known tunes is O Grande Amor, which he learned from Stan Getz, who recorded it several times ( like in Sweet Rain, March 1967). I played briefly with Stan Getz in the mid-1980s and it was from him that I learned O Grande Amor. It is now one of the tunes I like the best. It starts almost like a classical Debussy-etude before it developed into a more swinging rhythmical theme. Fred Hersch was allowed to make a choice from the hundreds of compositions archived in the Jobim estate. This album contains nine tracks - all tunes were composed by Jobim, but Fred's version is not a copy of the originals. He made a selection of lesser known tunes like Por Toda Minha Vida and Luiza and some more known themes like Meditacao, Insensatez and Desafinado. The latter surprises as it contains rhythms and harmonies you don't expect in this well known theme - Fred says that he was inspired by the Brazilian rhythms he had heard. His interpretation of the slow tunes are more like a meditation - almost introverted, like Bill Evans would have played it, but the more rhythmical up-tempo tunes like Desafinado and in Brigas Nunca Mais, one of the tunes that surprised me too, the rhythms and harmonies seem to be inspired by the Choro music. On this tune, Hersch is accompanied by percussionist Jamey Haddad. This album was recorded at Ambient Studio in Stamford CT and Hersch plays on a well tuned and great sounding Steinway piano. Love to share with you the tune Insensatez as played by Hersch on this album, dedicated to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Reading through so much of his music reinforced my belief that Jobim is one of the great composers of the 20th century regardless of genre. His bittersweet harmonies, fabulous melodies and superb craftsmanship are evident in everything he writes. ( Fred Hersch in the liner notes of Fred Hersch plays Jobim)

As this album has some relations with Choro-music it is also published on the Choro-music blog

Fred Hersch, piano player, played with Art Farmer, Eddy Daniels, Phil Woods, Tommy Flanagan, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Toots Thielemans and in the Mel Lewis Orchestra before he started to make his own records. Fred Hersch plays Jobim is one of his latest. He says to be inspired by the Choro-music he heard in Brazil and that makes this record a special one. Fred Hersch Trio + 2 speelt live op Northsea 09

Fred Hersch Trio + 2 live at North Sea Jazz 09 ( English) Fred Hersch Trio + 2 speelt live op Northsea 09 ( Nederlands)

Rotterdam - Ahoy: Vrijdag 10 juli 2009 in de Madeirazaal FRED HERSCH TRIO + 2 SPEELT LIVE OP NORTHSEA 09
Hans Koert

Let Yourself Go: De Levens van Fred Hersch.

Fred Hersch ( 10 juli 2009 - Northsea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( foto: Hans Koert* )

Ralph Alessi ( 10 juli 2009 - Northsea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( foto: Hans Koert*)

Tony Malaby ( 10 juli 2009 - Northsea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( foto: Hans Koert*)

Still Here.

Fred Hersch Trio ( + 2) ( 10 juli 2009 - Northsea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( foto: Hans Koert*)

Village Vanguard 21 t/m 26 juli 2009.

Fred Hersch Trio + 2 live at North Sea Jazz 09

Fred Hersch Trio + 2 live at North Sea Jazz 09 ( English) Fred Hersch Trio + 2 speelt live op Northsea 09 ( Nederlands)

Rotterdam - Ahoy: Friday 10th of July, 2009 at the Madeira
FRED HERSCH TRIO + 2 LIVE AT NORTH SEA JAZZ 09
Hans Koert

The North Sea Jazz Festival 2009 was scheduled on the 10th up to the 12th of July 2009 at Ahoy in Rotterdam. Hundreds of concerts - hundreds of artists and ten-thousands of visitors from all parts of the world joined the festival. Friday, the 10th of July 2009, when I visited the festival, 18,000 visitors made it feel comfortable – on Saturday and Sunday, with almost 25,000 visitors each night, the venue was jam-packed.

Today I love to point you to a concert by Fred Hersch and his trio ( + 2). The concert was scheduled at the Madeira, Friday the 10th of July, 2009.
I was anxious to hear this New York piano player because a half year ago a great documentary of this man, that fascinated me, titled
Let Yourself Go – Die Leben des Jazz Pianisten Fred Hersch ( The Lives of Fred Hersch) had been released in Germany.

Fred Hersch ( 10th of July 2009 - North Sea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert* )

Fred Hersch was born in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) in October 1955 and started his career as a jazz piano player with guitarist Cal Collins playing in Cincinnati. He studied music at the New England Conservatory. In 1977 he worked with Art Farmer, who had returned to the States after a ten years stay in Europe and toured with Sam Jones, Billy Harper, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz.
In the 1980s Fred Hersch became part of the
Mel Lewis Orchestra and played with Eddie Daniels and Toots Thielemans. He started his own trio, which lasts up until today. In the documentary Fred Hersch tells freely about his homosexuality, his HIV infection and about his fight to get his sexual inclination accepted in the States. That's why the title of the film reads Die Leben (= The lives) and not Das Leben ( = The life) des Jazz Pianisten Fred Hersch.

Ralph Alessi ( 10th of July, 2009 - North Sea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert*)

Fred Hersch introduced us during his five days tour in Europe, which brought him to Paris, Ghent, Amsterdam and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, John Hebert on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. For the Ghent and Rotterdam concerts he had enlarged his trio with trumpet player Ralph Alessi and tenor player Tony Malaby up to his Fred Hersch Trio + 2, a group active for five years now.

Tony Malaby ( 10th of July, 209 - North Sea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert*)

During the concert the Trio + 2 performed the Kenny Wheeler composition The Lark, Skipping and a song, with a hard to pronounce Swahili title: Kijito Mwanana. Fred Hersch also played some Wayne Shorter tunes, like Still Here.
For me it was great to hear Fred Hersch live in concert; now a days one of the best piano players and composers from the east coast of the US. On Sunday Fred Hersch returned to Rotterdam ( after a short trip to the Amsterdam BIMhuis) and the festival to accompany Norma Winstone.

Fred Hersch Trio ( + 2) ( 10th of July 2009 - North Sea Jazz 09 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert*)

Last week I wrote about the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the regular band of the Vilage Vanguard in New York City. Isn’t it cute to learn that Fred Hersch and his Trio is playing for a week arrangement at that same Village Vanguard? ( 21st up to 26th of July, 2009). And tonight - each Monday ............. the Village Vanguard Orchestra, of course ...... !!

* Due to the fact that I wasn’t allow to use my “professional camera” the pictures are of a minor quality – I explained it in a previous blog: North Sea Jazz – A Critical Note.

Let Yourself Go: The Lives of Fred Hersch

Let Yourself Go: De Levens van Fred Hersch (Nederlands) Let Yourself Go: The Lives of Fred Hersch (English)

( To a Fred Hersch Discography.)
LET YOURSELF GO - THE LIVES OF FRED HERSCH - JAZZ PIANO PLAYER
Hans Koert
A few weeks ago the documentary "Let Yourself Go'- The Lives of Fred Hersch has been released in Cologne, Germany. This Aha!DVD production was made by Katja Duregger, Journalistin, Autorin and Regisseurin ( = journalist, writer and producer) as she labels herself, who also made video productions about Die Junge Deutsche Jazz Szene ( = the young German jazz scene ), Kronos Quartet meets Bollywood and "Fünf Farben Jazz - Mangelsdorffs selbstbewusste Erben". This Fred Hersch production, a so-called Modular DVD, as she names it, contains several aspects, the "lives", of jazz piano player Fred Hersch, in seperate modules, like "Let Yourself Go", the main movie, "Listen" about Fred Hersch as a musician and composer; "To Tell a Story" about Fred Hersch as a Jazz teacher and "Always There" about the fight agains his HIV and AIDS infection. The last part contains fragments from concerts in Antwerp, Belgium (2007), Kalamazoo - Michigan (USA) (2006) and at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
Fred Hersch (photo courtesy Matthew Sussman)

Fred Hersch was born in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) in October 1955 and started his career with guitarist Cal Collins playing in Cincinnati. He studied music at the New England Conservatory. In 1977 he worked with Art Farmer, who had returned to the States after a ten years stay in Europe ( Fred Hersch plays the piano on the CTI album Yama) and toured with Sam Jones, Billy Harper, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz.
I found a fragment of the Art Farmer Quartet, featuring Art Farmer flügelhorn, Fred Hersch, piano; Dennis Irwin, bass; Billy Hart, drums playing the Charlie Parker composition Red Cross. ( ca. 1982)

In the 1980s Fred Hersch becomes part of the Mel Lewis Orchestra and plays with Eddie Daniels and Toots Thielemans. He starts his own trio, which lasts up until today. In the 1980s Fred Hersch becomes an active member of the gay scene and gets infected; he learned that he was HIV positive. In the documentary and the module "Always There" he speaks unrestricted about this period and this life-threatening infection, which catched him twenty years ago. It's a bit a miracle that he's still around as most of his infected friends are now gone. He tells how his HIV-infections changed his entire life: HIV changed everything, absolutely everything. It forced us gay men to grow up in a very short time ...... AIDS forced us to think about the consequences in a very cruel way.

Fred Hersch ( photo courtesy David Bartolomi )

He was one of the first jazz musicians to speak in public about his homosexuality and HIV infection, which made him a leading figurehead of those infected and a gay activist. I just came out, he explains in the film, because I was tired of thinking: Who knows and who doesn't. This takes away so much energy and I wanted to use this energy for my art and to be free from that. Being infected gives him, curiously, a lot of energy to make his music. He made benefit albums for the organization `Classical Action - Performing Arts Against AIDS, like Last Night When We Were Young - The Ballad album; albums with musicians like Toots Thielemans, Mark Murphy, Phil Woods, Jim Hall, Lee Konitz, Kenny Barron, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Lovano and Gary Burton. For each sold Let Yourself Go DVD one euro will be gifted to the German AIDS-Stiftung.

Four concert fragments are available on the DVD, two with his trio, featuring Drew Gress on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums and two solo. In recent years he often played solo piano, on records and live, like the 2006 Valantine track, recorded at the Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo or the concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. To me chords are not stack of things, he said about being a soloist: each note in a cord is a voice that wants to move somewhere. He is active in producing albums and as a composer for ballet music. I love to share a fragment I found of a Fred Hersch composition Red Autumn, danced by Tawny Chapman and William Lu.

This documentary brings a fascinating view of the many lives, sides, of Fred Hersch: Fred as a musician ( why do I have but few records from him? ) playing in his introvert style, like Bill Evans or Brad Mehldau; as a teacher in master classes; as the HIV infected which the "cocktail", those terrible pills, the AIDS medication day after day; with his relatives, his partner ...... This documentary is a very personal document of a great piano player, fighting against time with a life-threading infection as the sword of Damocles. A documentary you should see !!

Let Yourself Go: De Levens van Fred Hersch

Let Yourself Go: De Levens van Fred Hersch (Nederlands) Let Yourself Go: The Lives of Fred Hersch (English)
( Naar een Fred Hersch Discografie.)
LET YOURSELF GO - DE LEVENS VAN FRED HERSCH - JAZZPIANIST
Hans Koert

It forced us gay men to grow up in a very short time ...... ( = HIV veranderde alles, echt alles. ). AIDS forced us to think about the consequences in a very cruel way.( = AIDS drukte ons meedogenloos met de neus op de feiten.)

This takes away so much energy and I wanted to use this energy for my art and to be free from that.

To me chords are not stack of things, (= Voor mij zijn akkoorden geen stapels noten) zegt hij over het solospelen, Each note in a cord is a voice that wants to move somewhere.

Deze schitterende documentaire brengt op een fascinerende wijze "de levens" van Fred Hersch in beeld; een bevlogen man, die heerlijke introverte muziek á la Bill Evans of Brad Mehldau speelt ( Waarom heb ik maar zo weinig van Fred Hersch op CD?);
