Charlie Byrd - Latin Byrd

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

I think I have to tell my psychiatrist - some weeks ago I bought myself a copy of the great Milestone 2LP set Charlie Byrd - Latin Byrd; two LPs I sold twenty years ago when I believed that CDs were the new standard and LPs were finished. Now I know better - this compilation 2LP contains the best tracks Charlie Byrd ever made !!
Charlie Byrd was born in 1925 and started to study the guitar as a child. While in France, as a soldier due to World War II, he played with Django Reinhardt, his great youth idol. When the war was over he became a concert guitar player, as there were but few opportunities to play jazz guitar in a professional way. He studied classical guitar with Andres Segovia, the same classical master on the guitar that was an idol of Oscar Aleman. Charlie Byrd developed the technique of playing classical guitar for jazz and popular music and late 1950s he played again jazz in his trio and recorded with Woody Herman. In 1961 the US State Department sent him out as a musical ambassador to South America and when he returned he introduced the new rhythms of the bossa nova to the new world. He made a famous album with Stan Getz that became the start of the bossa nova hype in jazz. I wrote in a previous blog about Bola Sete, another guitar player that became famous playing the new Brazilian rhythms. Stan Getz started to make records with Jobim and Astrud Gilberto - Charlie Byrd made some great albums with his unamplified guitar playing, like Latin Impressions and Charlie Byrd's Bossa Nova. These two albums are to be found on this compilation 2LP.

Charlie Byrd is not the inventor of the bossa nova. Some say that in the early 1950s the Brazilian guitar player Laurindo Almeida incorporated Brazilian sambas in his jazz duets with Bud Shank. They recorded the results who found their way to Brazil, where local musicians developed it to the bossa nova style - never mind; the bossa nova as a new style in jazz was a great hype around the 1960s as you can hear on this great 2LP.
I'm not going to tell my psychiatrist - I guess; I'm affraid that he wants my copy.

I love to share with you a fragment of a concert with the Charlie Byrd Trio ( Charlie Byrd - Joe Byrd - Chuck Redd in New Orleans ) and a fragment of one of Charlie Byrds most famous tunes Felicidad in a tribute to Charlie Byrd by The Five Guitars (Paul Bollenback, Royce Campbell, Tony Gil, Donato Soviero, Rick Whitehead) including the original Charlie Byrd rhythm section (Keter Betts and Bill Reichenbach). A great tribute; Enjoy it.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Thanks, Hans, for remembering Charlie Byrd - a rare bird in the company of his contemporaries among American jazzguitarists. He was one of the first to apply fingerstyle playing technique to modern jazz, of course following his classical training. However, with Herman and Getz he played with a pick on electric guitar, sounds very different, indeed. His best latin recordings are with Laurindo Almeida, my favorite being 'Brazilian Soul' from early '80's. His best jazz recordings are with The Great Guitars from the 70s, his best solo album with trio may be 'Bluebyrd' from late '70's, I think.
Thanks for sharing the great video performances, too.
