Stan Meets Chet

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
I found this Stan Meets Chet LP a few weeks ago, featuring Stan Getz and Chet Baker, as released by Verve ( Verve 837 436 ). It contains four lenghtly tunes: I'll Remember April - a Medley of Autumn In New York, Embraceable You and What's New and Half- Breed Apache. On the fourth track, Jor-Du Chet doesn't play. They were accompanied by local Chicagoan musicians like Jodie Christian at the piano, Victor Sproles at the bass and Marshall Thompson on drums. It was recorded in Chicago February 1958.
It is one of those typically albums with two great soloists in the leading parts as they were recorded late 1950s. A lot of productions titled Hamp and Getz - Getz And Gilberto - Basie And Zoot and Mulligan Meets Monk or Stan Getz or Johnny Hodges ( to name a few) were released in this period. It was also the period of the rather primitive early stereo recordings which means that often both soloist play their part on the separate sound boxes.
Both Chet Baker as Stan Getz were very popular in the 1950s. Chet, who became popular in the pianoless quartet of Gerry Mulligan was trying to release from that image and Stan Getz was searching for new challenges in larger groups and he would discover the Latin -American music in Cuba together with Dizzy Gillespie in the early 1960s. To be honest, this recording, Stan Meets Getz, isn't their most sparkling album. Both musicians sound weary and dull.
I found some film fragments where you can see and hear both stars at a concert in a better mood in Stockholm twenty-five years later ( in 1983 ) and I hope you like it.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
Het bevat vier lange nummers: I'll Remember April - een Medley met daarin Autumn In New York, Embraceable You en What's New en Half- Breed Apache.
We kennen, om er een paar te noemen Hamp and Getz - Getz And Gilberto - Basie And Zoot and Mulligan Meets Monk of Stan Getz of Johnny Hodges.
