Curtis Fuller- Tommy Flanagan - Jazz ... It's Magic
The Curtis Fuller - Tommy Flanagan Quintet recorded on the 5th of September 1957, today 50 years ago. This recordings session was released at the Regent label and the Savoy Label with the great title Jazz .... It's Magic. It's Magic is one of the tracks, played as a part of a lenghtly medley of tunes ( nearly 14 minutes) one of the minor interesting parts of the album, due to its length. On the Savoy record Curtis Fuller gets all the credits, but in fact this was a quintet with two leader, Tommy Flanagan and Curtis Fuller, both born and raised at Detroit.
The members of the quintet are Tommy Flanagan at the piano, Sonny Redd on the alto sax, Curtis Fuller on trombone, George Tucker on bass and Louis Hayes at the drums. Curtis Fuller started his career in the army band of Cannonball Adderley in the early 1950s and with Kenny Burrell and Yusef Lateef. In 1957 he moved to New York and recorded several albums before he became a member of the famous Art Farmer - Benny Golson Jazztet, a group that fascinates me. Tommy Flanagan started his career in and around Detroit with musicians like Milt Jackson, Thad Jones and his brother Elvin before he, like Curtis Fuller, moved to New York. Around the time he made this recording with Curtis Fuller he was working as a freelance piano player with musicians like J. J. Johnson, Miles Davis and Coleman Hawkins, to name some, but he became known for his accompaniments of Ella Fitzgerald. He worked with her, with some intermissions, from 1956 up to 1978.
This album Jazz .... it's Magic is one of those typically late 1950s hard bop recordings. Don't expect firework - it is a record with bluesy melodies, well arranged, rather sophisticated with professional solo work. Except the two leaders of the band, Sonny Redd is one of the members that needs some lines. Also born in Detroit he came to New york together with Curtis Fuller. On this record he shows that he is a an expressive soloist, a dedicated follower of Charlie Parker. He plays some very good solos. It's a pity he didn't got the recognition he deserved.
In all ..... an excellent set by the younger ( in name) set of today's jazz, busy building their niche in jazzdom's Hall of Fame: the liner notes of the orginal Savoy LP read after fifty years.
