Lee Konitz Nonet

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
The LP Lee Konitz Nonet was release by Soul Note (SN 1069) and it was recorded live at the Jazz Festival of Laren, in the centre of The Netherlands on the 12th of August 1979. That explains the title of the LP, a very suitable one: Live at Laren.

Lee Konitz, born in October 1927, was 51 years old when he performed at the Laren Festival. Last year I heard Lee playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, together with Martial Solal, two senior jazz musicians still going strong.
Lee Konitz started his career in the late 1940s in the Claude Thornhill band after he had heard Lennie Tristano playing, the blind piano player, who had his own style, based on a kind of free-style jazz without pre-set limits ( as the key for example). Lee Konitz became one of his most dedicated followers in an alto saxophone style not related to Charlie Parker. In 1949 he was one of the members of the Birth Of The Cool band of Miles Davis, a nonet that made recordings, that would become very important for the development of the so-called Cool Jazz. The nonet of Lee Konitz, that performed in Laren thirty years later had the same instrumentation, only the French horn in the 1949 recordings became a second trumpet or flügelhorn, played by John Eckert. The tuba, played by Bill Barber in the Birth of the Cool band is now played by Sam Burtis, on both tuba and bass trombone.
The complete setup for the nonet was: Red Rodney and John Eckert trumpets and flügelhorn ( John also plays the picollo trumpet), Jimmy Knepper trombone, Sam Burtis bass trombone and tuba, Lee Konitz on alto and soprano sax, Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax and clarinet, Ben Aronov on piano, Ray Drummond on bass and Billy Hart on drums.
This nonet was one of Lee Konitz best ensembles, but, as Nat Hentoff says on the liner notes: The nonet has attracted enthusiastic response in Europe, but it's hard to keep goiing economically in the United States. When you come back from Europe, Lee said: It's a shock to get back to the economic reallity at home. The six tunes are all lenghtly interpretation, except Moon Dreams, which was also recorded by the Birth Of The Cool nonet, thirty years earlier. April is a Lennie Tristano composition, made around the theme of Remember April. One of the tunes, Who You, is a Jimmy Knepper composition, the trombone player. The two tracks on the B-side are both Chick Corea compositions: Times Lie and Matrix, both arranged by Sy Johnson, who also arranged music for
Charles Mingus.
A Lee Konitz album by his succcesfull nonet group, although over the hill at these recordings. Very entertaining arrangements and ensemble work.

ESBJÖRN SVENSSON:
The Swedish piano player Esbjörn Svensson passed away last weekend, aged 44, due to an accident while he was diving. He performed with his well known and popular band E.S.T. ( The Esbjörn Svenson Trio) last month at the International Jazz Festival in Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

The nonet has attracted enthusiastic response in Europe, but it's hard to keep goiing economically in the United States. When you come back from Europe, volgens Lee: It's a shock to get back to the economic reallity at home. Eén vande nummers, Who You, is een compositie van trombonist Jimmy Knepper.
