Bill Evans

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Last night I rediscovered this great Bill Evans concert. The concert with his trio was at the Village Vanguard in New York on the 25th of June 1961. It is one of the treasures in jazz that should be in any music collection. During that concert thirteen titles were played - all little jewels in jazz. The entire concert was released on a three CD by Riverside titled The complete Live At The Village Vanguard, but has also been released on separate albums like Waltz For Debby and Sunday At The Village Vanguard.
The Bill Evans features Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motion on drums. The ultimate jazz trio. It is said that, thanks to this piano-bass-drums trio, this concert became the jazz piano-trio standard. These records are very valuable too as they are the last recordings of Scott LaFaro who died at a car accident ten days after this concert.

Bill Evans music is rather introvert. You might remember his pale face, concentrated above the keyboard, playing only for himself, it seems. I remember the 1965 TV registrations for Jazz 625 where he plays the piano as if he is alone at home, alone behind his piano, alone with the music, the keys and himself. A great moment. Nowadays Brad Mehldau, another favorite of mine, seems to have adopted this way of playing the piano.
I found Waltz For Debby, not really a waltz as the body is not, from this Jazz 625 program and I love to share it with you. It was recorded 19 March 1965 and the musicians are Chuck Israel on bass and Larry Bunker on drums.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Bill Evans' muziek is erg introvert.
