The Art Farmer CD Brass Shout / The Aztec Suite contains two complete, now nearly forgotten albums, made by Art Farmer in 1959. Last night I listened to the first part, the Brass Shout.
In the 1980s, when the CD was the new developed medium, I sold all my LPs in a moment of weakness and started a collection on CD. Now, twenty five years later, my LP collections is growing, not because they sound better, but because some releases have never been issued on CD ( And an original LP cover has some emotional surplus value I think). The remembrance to certain LPs I sold in the 1980s is completely gone after all those years, but sometimes some albums come to the surface again; like the Brass Shout. This music was in my collection - I'm sure. I recognize that typically warm brass sound, made by the horns.
This nearly forgotten session is now reissued on a Gambit Record (69254) and contains two complete LPs. In May 1959 Art Farmer recorded Brass Shout with his tentet. This is the discographical information:

Around this time Art Farmer had a close cooperation with Benny Golson, with whom he founded a sextet. called the Jazztet. This great sextet lasted until 1962 and is for me one of the most lyrical and balanced groups from that period. Art Farmer played the trumpet in those days, but during this Jazztet period he gradually turned to the flugelhorn; the instrument he is now associated to. Benny Golson played the tenor saxophone, but is above all a great composer and arranger. Benny Golson arranged Brass Shout and gave it a warm sound, only using brass instruments, like the trumpet, the trombone, baritone horn, flugelhorn and tuba. The rhythm section, of course, contains bass and drums. Only in Moanin' and April In Paris, two tunes which seems not available on the original album, have Bobby Timmons on piano. For me this Brass Shout album is great, although I'm anxious to hear the second part of this CD - The famous Aztec Suite performed by Art Farmer and his Orchestra. Maybe later, next weekend.
I found a 1959 film fragment to illustrate Art Farmer playing , with the Gerry Muligan Quartet with Art Farmer on trumpet, Henry Grimes on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Gerry Mulligan is of course on bariton saxophone.

De Art Farmer CD Brass Shout / The Aztec Suite bevat twee volledige, bijna vergeten albums, gemaakt door Art Farmer in 1959. Gisteren luisterde ik naar het eerste deel: Brass Shout.
In de jaren tachtig, toen de CD het nieuwe veelbelovende medium was, heb ik in een moment van zwakheid al mijn LPs verkocht en begon ik een verzameling op CD. Nu, vijfentwintig jaar later is mijn LP collectie al weer aan het groeien, niet omdat ze beter klinken, maar doodeenvoudig omdat nog lang niet alles op CD verschenen is. Bovendien heeft een LP-hoes gewoon meer ...... De herinneringen aan bepaalde LPs uit die periode is in de loop der tijd wat vervaagd, maar toch komt er af en toe weer iets bovendrijven; dat had ik gisteren ook bij het beluisteren van Brass Shout. Ik had deze muziek vroeger in mijn verzameling. Ik herken die typische warme klank van het koper, gearrangeerd door Benny Golson. Deze bijna vergeten opnamesessie van mei 1959 van Art Farmer met zijn Tentet is nu heruitgegeven op Gambit Record (69254) onder de verzamelnaam The Brass Sessions. Rond deze tijd, 1959, werkte Art Farmer nauw samen met Benny Golson en stichtten ze samen een sextet, het Jazztet. Dit Jazztet werd opgegeven in 1962 en vormt voor mij één van de beste groepen uit deze periode, mede door de uitgebalanceerde arrangementen van Benny Golson. Art Farmer speelde de trompet, maar pakte steeds vaker de bügel, waarmee hij zijn verdere loopbaan geassocieerd bleef. Benny Golson bespeelde de tenor sax, maar is bovenal de componist - arrangeur van de groep. Benny Golson is ook verantwoordelijk voor de arrangementen in Brass Shout en dat is te horen in de schitterende arrangementen van het koper. Behalve de ritmesectie van piano ( alleen op Moanin' en April in Paris), bas en drum, worden alleen koperinstrumenten gebruikt, zoals de tompet, de bügel, de Franse Hoorn en de Tuba. Voor mij is dit album, Brass Shout, één van de mooiste Art Farmer - Benny Golson sessies geworden en dan heb ik nog niet eens naar The Aztec Suite geluisterd, die ook op voorhand een legendarische naam heeft. Dat moet dan maar tot het weekend wachten.
Ik vond een stukje film, uit diezelfde periode, waarin je Art Farmer kunt zien en horen spelen, weliswaar niet met zijn Brass Shout Tentet, maar met het kwartet van Gerry Mulligan. Gerry speelt uiteraard bariton sax, Henry Grimes de bas en Dave Bailey op drums.
