Gary Burton

It was shocking to learn that I didn't had any recordings of Gary Burton in my collection; a lack now solved with the purchase of the LP Gary Burton Norwegian Wood. This RCA International LP ( AJL1-0200 ) was released in 1972 and contains nine recordings from the 1960s, the period Gary Burton started his career.
Gary Burton was born in January 1943 in Anderson, Indiana (USA). He learned to play the piano as a kid and was self-taught on the vibraphone while at high school. Early 1960s he was a student of the Berklee School of Boston. The earliest track on this album is You Stepped Out Of A Dream, recorded in July 1961 from his first album New Vibe Man in Town, for me one of the best of this album. It shows his excellent four-mallet chording technique on the vibes. He was not inspired by other vibists, but by the piano player Bill Evans, he said. He played with George Shearing and between 1964 and 1967 he was part of the Stan Getz Quartet. Another track, Hello Young Lovers is from the album 3 in Jazz, an RCA compilation album which also has Sonny Rollins and Don Cherry, although not together with Burton. Since 1967 he played arrangements from Carla Bley and during the 1970s and 1980s he played frequently with Chick Corea.
This RCA compilation album contains the early Gary Burton, still active as a musician. He became an important educator in music and recorded for Atlantic ( since 1969), ECM ( since 1972) and GRP ( since 1988). I found a fragment where you can see him playing on the vibe in a solo piece demonstrating the four-mallet chording technique. The other fragments show him in a setting with Ahmad Jamal in 1981 and the third is in a 1978 live performance in Prague with Steve Swalow and Tiger Okoshi.

Eigenlijk durf ik niet te bekennen dat ik geen enkele plaat in mijn verzameling had van Gary Burton, totdat ik deze LP Gary Burton Norwegian Wood te pakken kreeg. Deze RCA International LP ( AJL1-0200 ) is uitgebracht in 1972 en bevat negen nummers met werk uit de jaren zestig, toen Gary Burton aan het begin van zijn grandioze carriere als vibrafonist stond. Gary Burton is geboren in januari 1943 in Anderson, Indiana (USA) en leerde piano spelen als kind; op de High School leerde hij zichzelf vibrafoon spelen. Begin jaren zestig zat hij op de Berklee School of Music van Boston. Time Waits is as successful as any of the sessions Powell cut in the final decade of his life. On this occasion Lion successfully navigated the twilight world of the pianist's psyche and legal competence.

Time Waits is net zo succesvol als elke andere opname uit de laatste tien jaar van Powell's leven. In dit geval lukte het Lion te manouvreren tussen Bud's geestelijke gesteldheid en zijn fysieke competenties.
