Keep (it) Swinging: 2013-07

Newsletter (July 2013) - Nieuwsbrief (juni 2013)
Welcome at the July Keep (it) Swinging newsletter, with a recollection at some great contributions.  Hope you like it. Girlish wrote me, according the latest newsletter: Great stuff both in your keep(it)swinging and Jazz Links.

Ik kreeg van Girlish de volgende "aanmoeding": Great stuff both in your keep(it)swinging and Jazz Links.

ARTICLES / ARTIKELEN

Rita Reys, Dutch Lady Jazz - European's First Lady of Jazz passed away, 88 years young ..... Her timing was legendary – her voice unforgetable ….

The Belgian saxophone player Jean Omer scored triumphs during the 1940s of the past century in the Brussels dance halls like the famous Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit. Now, almost forgotten, George Lankester snatches this neglected reed player and bandleader from oblivion.

CONCERTS / CONCERTEN:

Mijn Northsea
2013!

Earlier this month there was a homage to violinist Hernán Oliva in Argentina celebrating the Centennial of his birth. Members of the string swing conjunto Hot Club de Boedo lead by guitarist Waldo Fonseca took part in the arranged live performance.

REVIEWS / RECENSIES

To me, it's about touching people, making a difference .... If they hear something that makes them smile, that's what it's all about. Healing comes through that. Yoron Israel, US drummer, recently released a jazz album entitled Visions, dedicated to the music of Rhythm and Blues star Stevie Wonder ... whose compositions are jazz compositions .... Yoron states. A great album of a rather unknown sideman in this part of the world, which needs further recognition in Europe .....  but a sought after percussionist overseas.

Thom Kelling - A celebrated gypsy guitar player

His jazzy 1940s.
THOM KELLING: A CELEBRATED GYPSY GUITAR PLAYER
Hans Koert

Almost three years ago I posted a contribution about the Dutch entertainer, guitar player and vocalist Thom Kelling, titled Thom Kelling - 42 years later. He became known in Holland for his Latin American repertoire and he had some hits in the 1950s with tunes like Maria Dolores and Lola. Not much jazz in that ..... I posted a blog about him, remembering the fact that he was one of the first artists I heard in a live concert somewhere mid 1960s in De Prinsse ( = De Prins Van Oranje Theatre) in Goes in the southwest part of The Netherlands. I still remember queueing to get his autograph .............
Ticket with autograph of Thom Kelling and some other, unknown band members.
Last week Frenk Van Meeteren from The Hague contacted me that he had found two glass based records with three tunes sung by Thom Kelling: You Stepped Out Of A Dream - two takes of Ik Denk Nog Steeds Aan Jou and an unknown English tune, problably one of his own composition. A good reason to find out more about his life and career. Today the first part: Thom Kelling - A celebrated gypsy guitar player.
Glass based record with Ik denk nog steeds aan jou by Thom Kelling ( Collection Frenk van Meeteren).
Thom was born as Thom Zomerschoe in The Hague March 1922 as the eldest son of Jan Jurjen Zomerschoe and Coba Kelling. Both parents played at Dutch theatrical companies like the Hollandsch Tooneelgezelschap, directed by Nap de La Mar and the Nieuwe Haagsche Tooneel. Both used Kelling, Coba's family name, as their artists name and so did Thom later. After he had finished the HBS ( = the High School ) and his military service at the navy, he became a guitar player. He was also to be seen in plays, as breeding will out, at the Residentie Tooneel, a theatrical company, in which his parents were active too.
Glass based record with You stepped out of a dream by Thom Kelling ( Collection Frenk Van Meeteren).

In 1944 he became a member of the Boyd Bachman orchestra and performed as Tom Kelling, de gevierde zigeuner met z'n gitaar ( = Thom Kelling, the celebrated gypsy guitar player) all around The Netherlands and during the post war period he played for the US and English army. In 1946 he became a member of Piet Van Dijk en zijn dansorkest and played in venues like the Scheveningen Kurhaus, dancing La Cocogne and La Plaza in The Hague. One of his first recordings was with the Piet Van Dijk Dansorkest ( May 1946) ( unless the glass bases records in Fenk's collection turn out to be older then 1946). During the summer of 1947 he travelled with the Piet Van Dijk orkest to Portugal, where he stayed for one and a half year, learning the Portuguese and Spanish languages.
Thom Kelling ( 1922 - 1968)
In Portugal he got his own radio program where he sung fado's and he even became an honory member of the Hot Clube de Portugal. In Portugal he played in several night clubs with artists like Don Byas. It is said that Don liked his playing and wanted him in his bands. Kees Hazevoet, who studied the career of Don Byas and compiled an extensive bio-discography titled Don Byas: part 1: American Records - part 2: European records (Cornelis J. Hazevoet, Ph. D. - Lissabon (2009)) can't confirm this.

Piet Van Dijk tenor sax - Wim Vernie clarinet - Ado Broodboom trumpet - Daan Pfann guitar - Wesel Ilcken drums and Ted Powder bass ( photo Borgers ( collection Dutch Music Centre))
In 1948 Thom travelled with the Piet Van Dijk orchestra to Morocco for a four month gig in Tanger. Rita Reys, now in her 80s and still active as a vocalist, and Wessel Ilcken, were both members of the Piet Van Dijk band too. Rita sung the American songbook and Thom the Latin-American songs. In her biography "Rita Reys - Lady Jazz", written in Dutch by Rita Reys and Bert Vuijsje, released last year, she tells about this period, about their 1948 four-month contract at the Freddy's Embassy Club in Tanger ( Marocco). She tells that Thom didn't drink and that he was very critical about his food, because he was careful about his voice. He even didn't eat ice creams: Als ik ijs eet, dan krijg ik kou op mijn stembanden ( = When I'll take an ice cream, my vocal cords might get a cold .....), Thom explained. Rita Reys would develop into the leading European vocalist, honored as Europe's First Lady of jazz. In 1949 the band was to be found in Holland again performing in clubs like the Cascade in Rotterdam.
In the second part: Thom Kelling - a Dutch Latino more about his career during the 1950s and 60s.
Thanks to Kees Hazevoet for his information and Frenk van Meeteren for sharing his record scans. For more info about the glass-based records please contact.

Thom Kelling, one of those almost forgotten musicians in the post war period, known for his Latin-American repertoire during the 1950s and his TV-programs in the 1960s like Top of Flop. Today you could read about his jazzy 1940s in which he played in the Piet Van Dijk Dansorkest. Thanks to two recently discovered glass-based records dusted off in this Keep swinging blog. De jazz-jaren van een geboren toneelspeler
THOM KELLING: DE GEVIERDE ZIGEUNER MET ZIJN GITAAR
Hans Koert

Glasplaat met You stepped out of a dream door Thom Kelling ( Collectie Frenk van Meeteren).

Mat Mathews, accordion player, passed away

Mat Mathews, accordion player, passed away (English) Mat Mathews, accordeonist, overleden (Nederlands)

A rather extensive Mat Mathews Discography
MAT MATHEWS, ACCORDION PLAYER PASSED AWAY
Hans Koert
On the 12th of February, 2009 the Dutch accordion player Mathieu Schwartz passed away in Rotterdam aged 84 years old. He changed his name into Mat Mathews when he became a US citizen, as Mathieu was too hard to pronounce for Americans and he disliked his famiuly name Schwartz. He became famous in the 1950s as an accordion player in the New York jazz scene. This fact passed by almost unnoticed by the jazz scene and the news media. A shame !!
Born in The Hague, in the western part of The Netherlands, June 1924, he became fascinated to jazz thanks to a radio program he heard by the Joe Mooney Quartet on American Forces Networks (AFN) and he tried to play this "new" bebop music on his accordion. His first recordings were two glass acetates from 1944 with guitar player Peter Van Houten on the Van Wouw label. In the early 1950s he moved to the States and became one of the first to play jazz on his buttoned instrument. He played and recorded with musicians like Joe Puma, a New York guitar player, Carmen McRae, Oscar Pettiford and made numerous recordings under his own name for Dawn, Verve and Ariole. You can find an extensive Mat Mathews Discography below this contribution.

Adri Troost, guitar player and vocalist and Mat Mathews in Norway (1980s.)
Enjoy Mat playing in a fragment of a blues ( It Don't Mean A Thing ..) accompanied by a trio at the Bij Max Jazz Club (the club of Max Teeuwisse aka Max Teawhistle) in Den Oever (The Netherlands) July 1997.

One of those albums on the Dawn label is The Modern Art of Jazz by Mat Mathews with an all-star group featuring Art Farmer on the trumpet, Julius Watkins on the French horn, Gigi Gryce on alto saxophone, Herbie Mann on flute, Dick Katz at the piano, Joe Puma on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on the cello and bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. It's one of my favorite Mat Mathews albums. As his music didn't become a commercial success, he had to make a living as a studio musician, until he returned, disillusioned, to The Netherlands in the mid 1960s.
In The Netherlands he accompanied musicians like Rita Reys on one of her US tours and played with The Millers, a popular swing combo that played in the Benny Goodman style.
He became a studio musicians, arranger, producer and performed now and then, but his music never got the recognition it deserved. Other Dutch accordion players, that played jazzy sounds on their instrument, like
Art Van Damme in the States, Harry Mooten and Johnny Meyer in The Netherlands seemed to be more popular. The last decades he suffered from geriatric complaints and a weak health. I found an extensive series of articles in the Dutch language titled Mat Mathews by Piet Van Tienen ( Etten-Leur -The Netherlands) in the Doctor Jazz Magazine 179 - 180 -181 (2002-2003).
Love to finish with a fragment of a tune sung by Max Teeuwisse, better known as Max Teawhistle, featuring Mat Mathews on accordion, Jean Louis Van Dam at the piano, Ben Janssen on bass and Fred Van Opzeeland on drums.

Thanks to Jerry Priessen (Amsterdam) who pointed me to this sad news.

North State House Orchestra

START: To the latest blog Naar de laatste blog
ENGLISH:

In the 1960s advertisement agencies found a new way to contact households by sending tiny plastic records to introduce new products or services. These records were very light and thin because it was sent by snailmail. These soundies were called in The Netherlands Klankdrukken, which means to the letter "Sound prints"; these records were made by the English Sound for Industry or our own Dutch Sonopresse, based in Rotterdam. North State, a well known brand for cigarettes, tried to tempt mankind to smoke their cigarettes by informing clients to a new kind of package. On the free record well known vocalist Rita Reys, still active, although her ripe age, labeled in those days as Europe's First Lady of Jazz, sings with the North State Huisorkest ( = house orchestra), which was, no doubt about that, the Dutch Swing College Band as its name and picture was on the cover too.

(= This record was published on the day North State introduces its new international package ). (= We hope you will enjoy this record as much as you like our north State igarette - smooth and fragant American tabacco cigarettes)

During the 1960s promoting cigarettes and the smoking of it, was still accepted. Jazz music and jazz clubs were associated with the smoke of cigarettes, with a heavenly perspiring trumpet player playing a hot solo with a cigarette between his fingers and his eyes closed, concentrated, with the smoke in his eyes. Smoke Get's In Your Eyes was a hit in that kind of clubs. Jazz was not only associated with cigarette smoking, but also with alcohol and drugs, hookers and gamblers; without all those temptations, born in the cities of Sodom and Gomorra ( or New Orleans' Storyville if you like) you could never enjoy Jazz music - you couldn't survive a jazz concert without it- it suggested. Do you remember the cartoon short: Tin Pan Alley Cats? Or my contribution Ain't Misbehavin', about my first introduction to the Fats Waller soundies.
Rita Reys in Middelburg ( May 2008) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)
In this Keep Swinging blog I wrote about those soundies - klankdrukken - in previous blogs, like the one simply labeled: Soundsheets. The four tunes on this tiny record were all recorded in The Hague on the last day of July 1963 and are to be found on the well known Philips album: Rita Reys and the Dutch Swing College Band: Jazz Sir That's Our Baby ( Philips 433284PE) (mind the play upon words in the title of the record). The Dutch Swing College Band featured in those days Ray Kaart on trumpet, Dick Kaart on trombone, Peter Schilperoort on the clarinet, Arie Ligthart on banjo and guitar, Bob van Oven on bass and Lu Ssanet ( real name Louis de Lussanet ) on drums. Rita Reys, of course, is doing the vocals. I found a fragment of her singing After You've Gone with the Dutch Swing College Band:

Thanks Frits pointing me to this record.

'TAIN'T NO SIN ( To Dance Around In Your Bones)
Words by Walter Donaldson - Music by Edgar Leslie (1929)
played on a Clarendon Player Piano from ca 1901

Verse:
Danc -ing may do this and that, And help you take off lots of fat
But I'm no friend of danc -ing when it's hot!
So if you are a danc -ing fool, Who loves to dance but can't keep cool
Bear in mind the i -dea that I've got.

Chorus:
When it gets too hot for com -fort, And you can't get ice -cream cones,
'Tain't No Sin, to take off your skin, and dance a -round in your bones.
When the laz -y syn -co -pa -tion of the mus -ic soft -ly moans,
'Tain't No Sin, to take off your skin, and dance a -round in your bones.
The Pol -ar Bears are -n't green up in Green -land, They've got the right i -dea.
They think it's great to re -frig -er -ate while we all cre -mate down here.
Just be like those Bam -boo Ba -bies, In the South Sea trop -ic zones,
'Tain't No Sin to take off your skin, And dance a -round in your bones.

Pure karaoke avant la lettre ........

Slim and Slam: a dime a dozen?

What's your favorite? KEEPSWINGING.BLOGSPOT.COM 1000
SLIM and SLAM: A DIME A DOZEN?
Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart in duo: Slim and Slam, as they labeled themselves, where rather popular in the New York clubs in 1938 and Vocalion made several recordings with this popular duo, known for their nonsensical novelty pieces. Their Flat Foot Floozie with one Floy Joy, became a hit in 1938 ( the Dutch duo Johnny and Jones ( Nol Van Wesel and Max Kannewasser recorded this tune in 1938 as their first Decca recording ). Ever heard the song text: Laguna oreeney - Laguna orooney - laguna oreeney - Lyin' in the Sun and Havin' Fun or the nonsensical quote: Pippity Pop, Goes The Motor-sickle; Phrases one never forgets! Slam plays the bowed bass.
On the 9th of November 2008, today 70 years ago, Slim and Slam recorded four sides for Vocalion:
SLIM AND SLAM: Slim Gaillard guitar and vocal - Slam Stewart bass and vocal with Kenneth Hollon on tenor saxophone - Sam Allen on the keys and Pompey "Guts" Dobson on drums.
Recorded for Vocalion in New York City on the 9th of November 1938.
Dopey Joe - Sweet Safronia - It's Gettin' Kinda Chilly - Buck Dance Rhythm
According the discographies Slim Gaillard tap-dances on the last title.
Seventy years ago they recorded four tunes accompanied by three musicians, mentioned above. Kenneth Hollon played the tenor saxophone in bands like Hal Hunter's in the early 1930s and introduced Billie Holiday for one of her first public appearances. He would be one of the musicians that accompanied her on the "great" Strange Fruit recording for Commodore; "great"? The song, not the subject of the song of course.
Slim Gaillard: guitar player and vocalist, but also active on the piano.
The four tunes on this session, all Gaillard compositions, are light-footed and entertaining - played in an up-tempo with a screaming saxophone; the typical bowed bass and Slam vocalizing the tones to play; and a swinging rhythmical guitar: Dopey Joe (from Baltimore), (Say Hey Hey) Sweet Safronia, (Man, it's really cold ........) It's Gettin' Kinda Chilly and Buck Dance Rhythm - all with nonsensical lyrics. The tap-dance in the last tune, credited to Slim Gaillard in the books, was not done by Slim, but by one of the fans in the recording studio, Kenneth Hollon remembered 35 years later ....... Well he was in that studio, so why should we question the correctness of the story? Slim Gaillard was a good dancer after all. Jerry pointed me to a film fragment from the film Hellzapoppin' from 1941, in which Slim Gaillard is to be heard on the piano, together with his companion Slam Stewart on the bass; a great fragment to introduce you to their music.

A great dance party .......... By the way - the music of Slim en Slam, jive music - rhythm & blues and rock and roll avant-la-lettre should be labeled as amusement or vaudeville music. It's entertaining and you don't need to have a music's degree to understand it. Great to listen to, but if you listen to the four songs of this 70 years old recording session it seems as if they all have the same drive - the same sound - the same melody - the same key. I found a compilation by a guy who says that he hates all Slim and Slam music, because they all sound the same. He took a fragment of a Slim and Slam performance and posted some songs simultaneous in the film. Listen to it and .......... to be honest? ........ well judge yourself.

After You've Gone vertolkt.
