Rita Reys in Middelburg

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
On Friday the 9th of May 2008 Rita Reys opened the second International Jazz Festival of Middelburg, in the south west part of The Netherlands, with a concert at the Stadsschouwburg. The festival, which lasts four days, from the 9th up to the 12th of May 2008, promises to become a crowd puller due to the scedulded international famous artists and the sunny weather forecast, a great combination for an open-air festival.
Rita Reys ( Middelburg - May 2008)
Rita Reys, 83 years old, performed with a trio directed by piano player Erik Van Der Luyt. In two sets Rita Reys sung about twenty tunes, most from the American Songbook. Despite her age she still has that certain magic that belongs to the great star of the previous decades. On stage she still tries to pull the strings and Erik van der Luyt and his men gave her this feeling in a professional way.
Erik Van Der Luyt ( Middelburg - May 2008)
Rita Reys, Europe's First Lady of Jazz, sung some well known standards like In A Mellow Tone, I Hear Music, One Of Those Things, Love For Sale and I'm Old Fashioned; tunes she must have sung a hundred times during her more then 65 years career in music. Her voice is still fascinating, although, due to her advanced age, less stronger in the higher regions. Erik van der Luyt had to transpose tunes down like The Man I Love for her convenience and had to help her to find the place to join in, in tunes like What About You. The audience didn't mind .....
Marius Beets ( Middelburg - May 2008)
The Erik van der Luyt Trio accompanied her in a professional way. The members of his trio were different from the musicians announced ( Ruud Jacobs, Rita's accompanist of the first hour and Joost Patocha on drums, were both absent), but, both Marius Beets on bass and Gijs Dijkhuizen on drums did do a good job. One of the highlights of the evening was a great duo performance by Rita Reys and Marius Beets on bass in Poor Butterfly.
Gijs Dijkhuizen ( Middelburg - May 2008)
The audience, most contemporaries, enjoyed the concert of this great Dutch vocalist, which became international famous in the 1950s and is still going strong. ( Isn't it great to sing all those beautiful tunes? I hope to do so for the next ten years). It won't be our fault .......

IN MEMORIAM:
During the last weeks several great jazz musicians have passed away. Humphrey Lyttelton, for me the distinguished announcer of the BBC
Jazz 625 programs, but a great musican and bandleader too, passed away almost 87 years old and Jimmy Giuffre, 86 years old, who was a great west coast saxophone player. Less known was Franz Jackson, who passed away on the ripe age of 95. This saxophone player will be remembered in this blog by Yves Francois Smierciak next week.

THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU - CHRISTINA VON BÜLOW TRIO & JAN ALLAN:
Christina Von Bülow - Jacob Fischer - Jens-Skou Olsen - Jan Allan ( ablution - dialogic - if i should lose you - i'm confessin' - marionett - poor butterfly - round & round & round - saga of harrison crabfeathers - very thought of you - vise i februar - guess i'll hang my tears out to dry - jitterbug waltz ). Recorded in the Sound Track Studio in Copenhagen, denmark on the 10th - 12th of May 1994 for Dragon Records.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Rita Reys ( Middelburg - mei 2008)
Marius Beets ( Middelburg - mei 2008)
Gijs Dijkhuizen ( Middelburg - mei 2008)

IN MEMORIAM:
