Keep (it) Swinging: Het Miller Sextet

Today - back in time .... with some nostalgia. On the cover of the 1982 2LP De 28 Beste Van De Millers ( = The 28 Best Tunes of The Millers) I read: Een easy-listening groep die al meer dan 40 jaar aktief is, dat komt niet elke dag voor! Toch is er in Nederland zo'n band die al jaren met een heel eigen sound het zg. "Middle of the Road" publiek bijzonder aanspreekt. ( = You don't often see an easy-listening band, that is active for more then 40 years. Well, in The Netherlands such a band exists, with his own style of music, popular at the "Middle of the Road" public )

The Miller Sextet, with musicians like Ab de Moolenaar, Eddy Doorenbosch, Susi Møller, Coen van Nassau, Paul Ruys and Sanny Day was a very popular band right after the war from 1945 up to the 1960s with tunes like Just a Gigolo, Route 66, Take A Letter Miss Smith, Makin' Whoopee up to Dutch tunes like Drie Kleine Visjes, all played in an easy kind of mainstream swing. Their signature tune was Make Mine Millers.

The Millers, as they called themselves too, were actually founded in 1940, when Ab De Moolenaar started a rhythme-quartet with his brother Jochem (Jock), Joop Mate and Sanny Day. Their first concert was in June 1940. After the war, people needed amusement and a lot of Dutch groups were founded and others were reborn or restarted and became popular during the late 1940s, like the Kilima Hawaiians, The Ramblers, het kwartet Jan Corduwener, het orkest Malando, The Dutch Swing College Band and ... The Millers. After the war The Millers were extended up to a Sextet, which featured 8 (!) persons: Ab De Moolenaar on guitar and piano, Jan Doedel, on violin, Herman Vis on rhythm guitar, Hielke Scheffer on bass and vocal, Coen Van Nassau on vibes, Pete Parker vocal and guitar, Pia Beck piano, vocal and acordion, and Sanny Day vocal. During that period they called themselves The Miller Sextet met Sanny Day en Pete Parker or just short The Miller Sextet + 2.
They toured through Germany with the so-called Camp-shows and played for the US Forces in G.I. Clubs. They became very popular in Germany. They recorded for Decca tunes like Chickery Chick, Gotta Be This and Sweet Georgia Brown.

I found the 2LP De 28 Beste Van De Millers ( = The 28 Best Tunes of The Millers) on CBS 28217 and in the Dutch Jazz Giants Box the third volume was entirely dedicated to The Millers. (What a pity that this great box has so few discographical information): Nostalgia for the generation, that were teenager in the period after the war, now all aged.

Zonder de Millers zou muzikaal Nederland nooit meer hetzelfde zijn ! ( = Without the Millers, music in Holland would't be the same anymore) the cover reads, suffering from an inflated ego !!

Vandaag ... terug in de tijd. .... met een beetje nostalgie ! Op de hoes van de uit 1982 daterende dubbel-LP De 28 Beste Van De Millers staat: Een easy-listening groep die al meer dan 40 jaar aktief is, dat komt niet elke dag voor! Toch is er in Nederland zo'n band die al jaren met een heel eigen sound het zg. "Middle of the Road" publiek bijzonder aanspreekt.
Het Miller Sextet, met musici als Ab de Moolenaar, Eddy Doorenbosch, Susi Møller, Coen van Nassau, Paul Ruys en Sanny Day was een erg populaire band net na de Twede Wereldoorlog tot in de jaren zestig. Ze behaalden hits met nummers als Just a Gigolo, Route 66, Take A Letter Miss Smith, Makin' Whoopee en zelfs een Nederlandstalig liedje Drie Kleine Visjes, alle gespeeld in een gemakkelijk in het oor liggend soort mainstream swing. Hun herkenningsmelodie was Make Mine Millers.
De Millers zoals ze ook wel genoemd werden, werden in feite opgericht in 1940, toen Ab de Moolenaar begon met een zgn. rhythme-quartet waarin hij zat, samen met zijn broer Jochem (Jock), Joop Mate en Sanny Day. Hun eerste concert was in juni 1940. Na de oorlog was er een grote behoefte aan amusement en een heleboel Nederlandse groepen zijn toen van start gegaan, opnieuw opgestart of goed doorgebroken, zoals de Kilima Hawaiians, De Ramblers, het kwartet Jan Corduwener, het orkest Malando, De Dutch Swing College Band en ... de Millers natuurlijk. Na de oorlog groeiden de Millers uit tot een sextet, dat uit acht (!) personen bestond: Ab de Moolenaar op gitaar en piano, Jan Doedel op viool, Herman Vis op ritmegitaar, Hielke Scheffer bas en zang, Coen van Nassau op de vibrafoon, Pete Parker zang en gitaar, Pia Beck piano, zang en accordeon en Sanny Day zang. Tijdens deze periode noemden ze zichzelf Het Miller Sextet met Sanny Day en Pete Parker of gewoonweg Het Miller Sextet + 2.
Ze traden veel op in Duitsland voor de Amerikaanse troepen met hun zgn. Camp-shows in voornamelijk de G.I. Clubs. Ze werden er razend populair en namen voor Decca platen op als Chickery Chick, Gotta Be This en Sweet Georgia Brown.

Ik vond de dubbel-LP met De 28 Beste Van De Millers op CBS 28217 en in de Dutch Jazz Giants Box (Wat jammer dat de discografische informatie er zo bekaaid vanaf komt) is het derde deel helemaal gewijd aan De Millers. Nostalgie voor de generatie, die tieners waren na de oorlog, nu allen zo rond de tachtig.

Zonder de Millers zou muzikaal Nederland nooit meer hetzelfde zijn ! - meldt de hoes; een uitspraak geheel voor zijn eigen rekening uiteraard .........
