Trio Bill Crow - Teddy Charles - Don Roberts
Verkoopprijs boek, incl. twee cd’s, € 39,90

BUNNY BERIGAN ( 1908 - 1942 )
Today we commemorate the fact that 100 years ago, on the 2nd of November 1908, Rowland Bernart Berigan, better known as Bunny Berigan, was born in Hilbert, Wisconsins.
This great trumpet player and bandleader started his career in the early 1930s in the orchestra of Freddie Rich and he is to be heard on the well known Hit of the week recordings by Freddie Rich's Radio Orchestra Little Girl and It's The Girl. He joined Paul Whiteman's Orchestra and later Benny Goodman's band and even got his own big band late 1930s. He had a very popular big band and I love to play a record for you to introduce you to the kind of music he played. It's a recording from 1936 in which Bunny Berigan and his Boys accompany the crooner Chick Bullock in the song A Little Bit Later On.

This kind of sweet music of the 1930s is not really my piece of cake, as I love more hot versions from that period to show Bunny Berigan's excellent trumpet playing. I found a small fragment with three charming young ladies, The Boswell Sisters, singing Crazy People, scatting the trumpet part like a Fay Claassen or Roberta Gambarini's avant-la-lettre, but if you listen carefully you hear in the background Bunny Berigan on trumpet. Great! That's the way I love to hear Bunny play his music.

Bunny Berigan drunk too much, like another trumpet giant of the 1920s Bix Beiderbecke, which caused his death early 1940s. Bunny was great, but he had no business dying that young, Louis Armstrong must have said about this talented trumpet player who was often compiled with him as the "white" Louis Armstrong.

ART BLAKEY's MOANIN'- 50 years
A few days ago I published a small contribution about Art Blakey's album Moanin' that was recorded 50 years ago. I got some commends from several readers about this Art Blakey "Kind of Blue" album, refering to Miles Davis price-winning release.
Julian Pressley wrote on the Sax on the Web forum about my blog and pointed to some members of the Jazz Messengers, like tenor saxophone Benny Golson, bass player Jymie Merritt and piano player Bobby Timmons.
He wrote: Jymie is living in Philly and rehearsing a band as we speak. The story is that Benny pulled Jymie out of BB King's band, where he was playing Fender bass. Benny said that Art wasn't too happy with that idea until he heard Jymie play, then he was cool. Benny said that Lee was working in Johnny Lynch's band at the Club Harlem in Atlantic City, was happy with that gig, and had to be persuaded to join Art. Benny also said that Bobby Timmons had the outside to Moanin', but couldn't think of a bridge. Bobby wanted Benny to write the bridge for him, but Benny wouldn't do it, so Bobby was forced to write the whole tune himself.
Benny had all of this influence because Art had made him the MD (= music director) of the Messengers, and had given him the power to hire and fire. I heard all of this on a radio interview that Benny did recently. I've worked with Benny a few times and hung out with him. He's very down to earth and just a really nice person. Long live Benny Golson and Jymie Merritt!!!!

Refering to the rare film fragment by the Jazz Messengers I posted, Julian writes: All Philly side men. Interesting to see my friend Jymie Merritt with his hair conked!!!!

Julian Pressley

Thank you Julian for your permission to post your commend.

Jean-Luc Ponty - violist

( To the English section with a 50 years old top hit recording: Moanin' by the Jazz Messengers.)
JEAN-LUC PONTY: ENIGMATIC OCEAN

ART BLAKEY and te JAZZ MESSENGERS - MOANIN'
Lee Morgan trumpet - Benny Golson tenor saxophone - Bobby Timmons piano - Jymie Merritt bass - Art Blakey drums.
Moanin' - Are You Real - Along Came Betty - The Drum Thunder Suite - Blues March - Come Rain or Come Shine
Recorded in Hackensack NJ (USA) in the Rudy Van Gelder Studios on the 30th of October 1958 for Blue
Note

This album contains the third version of the Jazz Messengers. New musicians were Benny Golson, responsable for the tenor sax sound of course, but also responsable for several compositions on this record like Are You Real, Along Came Betty, The Drum Thunder Suite and, of course, his great hit Blues March. He would stay for two years in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Also Bobby Timmons, the piano player was new in this band. He was responsable for the title tune Moanin' which would become the Jazz Messengers first hit and maybe the best known tune for Art Blakey to remember. There are but few film fragments of this great all-star band, but I found a preview of this band playing in Belgium, with a young 20 years old Lee Morgan, who just finished his first professional job in Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band. Enjoy this preview, made a month after this Moanin' recording session - now 50 years ago.

I Remember Clifford

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Today a great composition by Benny Golson: I Remember Clifford.

Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers: Lee Morgan,Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons,Jymie Merritt ( 1958)
I Remember Clifford was written by Benny Golson as a so-called threnody, a mourning for his friend and collegue Clifford Brown who passed away in a car accident June 1956. By that time Benny Golson played in the Dizzy Gillespie band and became known as a composer. One of his first great compositions, now a standard, was I Remember Clifford. Benny Golson, although a gifted tenor saxophone player with a smooth tone is nowadays a great composer and arranger. I love to show you a rather recent fragment in which you can hear and see him in a 2000 concert with some great musicians as Curtis Fuller on trombone, Mulgrew Miller at the piano, Buster Williams bass and Carl Allen drums.

Benny Golson - Terneuzen 1999

I remember I heard Benny Golson at the a concert in the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen (southwest part of The Netherlands) April 1999 where he performed as a guest with the Cyrus Chestnut Trio, featuring Benny Golson on tenor saxophone, Cyrus Chestnut at the piano, Kengo Nakamura bass, Neil Smith drums. I remember that I was at the sound check before concert and they discussed the tunes they were going to play. Of course they might have played I Remember Clifford and Blues March, no doubt about that, but I remember how Benny Golson was discussing and arranging some tunes before concert he wanted to perform.

Two years ago I heard Benny Golson playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam July 2006 with his Benny Golson All Stars, featuring Benny Golson on tenorsax, Roy Hargrove on the trumpet and flügelhorn, Eddie Henderson trumpet, Lynn Arriale piano, Buster Williams bass and Al Foster drums.
Roy Hargrove - Terneuzen April 2007
Regular visitors of my
Keep swinging blogs know that I love Roy Hargrove's trumpet playing, or better, his ballads on the flügelhorn. A great instrument for ballads, especially in the hands of Roy. That's why I love to finish this blog with Roy's version of I Remember Clifford.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Vandaag staat een schitterende compositie van Benny Golson centraal: I Remember Clifford.

Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers: Lee Morgan,Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons,Jymie Merritt ( 1958)

Benny Golson - Terneuzen april 1999
Ik herinner me
Roy Hargrove - Terneuzen april 2007

The Legacy of Art Blakey

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
One of the band leaders that appeals to one's imagination was Art Blakey. Art Blakey (1919 - 1990 ) was one of the founders and life-long band leader of his famous Jazz Messengers, the breeding ground for a lot of young talent. Wynton Marsalis, to name one, started his career in this band. Art Blakey was, in my case, one of the first legendary jazz musicians from the States I heard in concert (20 April 1980 ) at The Doelen in Rotterdam.
When I have refound the pictures I made during that night, I will tell more about that concert.
In 1997, now ten years ago, a group of musicians decided to make a tour dedicated to this great Jazz Messengers. The musicians of the band were all former members of the band. From the first period were Benny Golson and Curtis Fuller; Terence Blanchard and Peter Washington played in the 1980s and Geoff Keezer was Bu's ( Blakey's pet name) last piano player. Lewish Nash, the drummer, never played with Art Blakey, a drummer himself, but he was tremendous influenced by him. This album was recorded during the tour dedicated to The Legacy of Art Blakey at a live concert at the Iridium in New York City, and during some concerts in Pittsburg where Blakey lived, today ten years ago, on the 7th and 9th of November 1997.
The album contains some well known tunes as played by Blakey's originally Jazz Messengers, like of course Blues March. Other tunes are the Wayne Shorter composition One By One and Whisper Not, like Blues March, written by Benny Golson. A great tribute to Art Blakey.
I found a 1959 film fragments of the originally Art Blakey Jazz Messengers in San Remo to share with you. Hope you like it.

If you have a subject that should be discussed here and you love to share it with the visitors of this blog please contact me ( keepswinging@live.nl ). Maybe you're the next guest contributor.
