Jazz music should to be played live, at stage, in a proper venue with an enthusiast public and inspired musicians. There ought to be a kind of vibration, a kind of tense, that keeps the audience captivated to the music. If you don't have that opportunity you'll have to manage with recorded concerts, like the Joshua Redman Quartet album Spirit Of The Moment - Live At The Village Vanguard.
This live album, was, as the title indicates, recorded on a double CD at in the Village Vanguard in New York City. Joshua Redman performed with his Quartet ( featuring himself on saxophones, Peter Martin at the piano, Christopher Thomas on bass and Brian Blade on drums) for one week in March 1995.
Joshua Redman, son of the late Dewey Redman, started his career in the early 1990s with the Thelonious Monk Award and started to perform and record in all kind of groups. He made his first recordings as a leader in 1992, just labeled Joshua Redman. The next two, before the Village Vanguard Live performance are Wish and Mood Swing, albums that are worth to sarch for.
The live recording in the Village Vanguard guarantees you two sets of more then 70 minutes of great jazz improvisations, with lengthly solos of all four musicians. I found a fragment of a 1997 concert that illustrates the powerfull style of Joshua Redman.

Jazzmuziek hoort thuis op het podium, in een club waar je vlak bij de muzikanten bent, met een enthousiast publiek en geinspireerde musici. Er moet een soort spanning voelbaar zijn tussen de muziek en de muzikanten en het publiek moet daardoor geboeid raken. Allemaal ingredienten die horen bij een geslaagd concert. Als je die kans niet hebt zul je het moeten doen met opgenomen concerten, waarin die spanning nog steeds voelbaar is, zoals bij het Joshua Redman Quartet album Spirit Of The Moment - Live At The Village Vanguard. Dit live dubbel album is, zoals de titel suggereert, opgenomen in de Village Vanguard in New York City tijdens een week van optredens in maart 1995. Joshua Redman speelt er met zijn quartet, dat bestaat uit Joshua Redman zelf op de saxofoons, Peter Martin achter de piano, Christopher Thomas op bas en Brian Blade op drums . Joshua Redman, zoon van Dewey Redman, die onlangs overleed, begon zijn carriere in de jaren negentig door meteen maar de prestigieuze Thelonious Monk Award te winnen.
