The Complete Hit of the Week Recordings-volume 3

Archeophone Records announces that they will publish the third double-CD in its series The Complete Hit of the Week Recordings within a few days.
The release date is the 24th of October 2007.
The first and second double-CDs were released a few years ago and when the last and fourth double-CD wil be published all
Durium records in the Hit of the Week series will be published - an unique treasure in the history of the sound recording.
The Hit of the weeks were a series of weekly releases, started in February 1930 up to July 1932 which contained a song that was popular at that time. Each Thursday a new Hit of the week record was sold at news stands. It is remarkable that these cardboard records still exist and that the sound quality is very good, although you should keep in mind that we are talking about an ephemeral product, a record with a limited life expectancy. The third double CD contains all Hit of the weeks from the second half of the year 1931. During that period the new firm, Durium Products Incorporated, started to publish the so-called 5-minutes recording. An unique procedé using so-called micro grooves made it possible to create a two minutes extra playing time. The first 5-minutes Hit of the week records have a spoken introduction: 
I found a film fragment of a record collector who plays one of the 5-minutes records - It's The Girl by Freddie Rich Radio Orchestra, featuring Tommy Gott and Bunny Berigan trumpets, Tommy Dorsey and Charlie Butterfield trombones, Elmer Feldkamp clarinet and alto saxophone, probably Tony Parenti doubling on these instruments too, Cornell Schmelser accordion, Joe Venuti violin, Freddie Rich piano, Eddie Lang guitar and Joe Tarto or Hank Stern on tuba. Elmer Feldkamp is the vocalist accompanied by an unknown vocal group, that might be some members of the band.
As the Hit of the Week records are curled, due to the fact that one side was covered with an acetate called Durium and the reverse not, you had to use a record lock to flatten the record. This guy uses a nut,a very effective way to flatten.

Archeophone Records kondigde deze week aan dat de derde dubbelcd in haar serie The Complete Hit of the Week Recordings binnen een paar dagen zal verschijnen. De 2CD staat gepland voor 24 oktober 2007. De eerste en tweede 2CD. verschenen al eerder en de vierde dubbelCD zal later de serie complementeren; alle Hit of the week platen zullen dan vastgelegd zijn - een uniek document over de geschiedenis van de geluidsopname.
De Hit of the weeks waren gramofoonplaten, waarvan er elke week één verscheen, beginnende bij februari 1930 tot juli 1932. Ze bevatten de populaire liedjes van die dagen en werden in de krantenkiosken verkocht. Elke donderdag verscheen een nieuwe. Opvallend is dat ze van karton gemaakt zijn met een kunststof laag er over heen, durium, en dat, hoewel ze gemaakt waren als een soort wegwerpproduct, nog steeds te vinden zijn. De derde dubbelcd bevat alle Hit of the weeks van de tweede helft van 1931. Gedurende die periode was de firma Durium Products Incorporated, gestart met een nieuw soort plaat, een unicum, de zgn. 5-minuten plaat. Door een uniek productieproces met zgn. micro-grooves ( micro-groeven) kon men twee extra minuten speeltijd op een gramofoonplaat krijgen. Deze eerste 5-minuten platen haden een gesproken introductie:
This is a new Durium record, playing five minutes of continious quality music, almost twice the playing time of the average record. Next Thursday, a new Hit of the week at your news-stand. (= Dit is de nieuwe Durium plaat, die vijf minuten hoogwaaardige muziek brengt, bijna tweemaal zoveel als een gewone plaat. Komende donderdag bij je krantenkiosk. )
Durium Products Incorporated begon ook een uitgebreide serie reclame en gelegenheidsplaatjes te maken. Je vindt er een twaalftal op deze plaat; daarover vertel ik in een volgend blog meer.
Ik vond een filmfragment waarin een platenverzamelaar één van die eerste 5-minuten platen draait, die ook op de 2CD staat. It's The Girl door het Freddie Rich Radio Orchestra, met daarin Tommy Gott en Bunny Berigan op trompet, Tommy Dorsey en Charlie Butterfield op trombone, Elmer Feldkamp op klarinet en altsax, waarschijnlijk Tony Parenti eveneens op klarinet en sax, Cornell Schmelser op accordeon, Joe Venuti viool, Freddie Rich piano, Eddie Lang gitaar en Joe Tarto of Hank Stern op tuba. Elmer Feldkamp is de znger bijgestaan door een onbekend koortje, dat wel uit leden van de band zal bestaan.
Aangezien Hit of the week platen altijd krom staan, vanwege het feit dat de oppervlaktespanning onregelmatig is ( Er zat slechts aan één kant een laag durium !), moest hij op de gramofoon eerst platgeduwd worden met een zgn. record lock. Deze man gebruikt een grote moer om de plaat op zijn plaats te houden; handig en goedkoop !!
