Peter Beets - New Groove

Yesterday the new CD of the Peter Beets Trio was launched at a concert in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. The new CD is titled New Groove and features Peter Beets in two trios. His New York Trio was recorded on the 10th of april 2007 at the Systems Two Recording Studios in New York and features Peter Beets on piano, Joe Cohn at the guitar and Reuben Rogers on bass. For his Dutch trio he invited Martijn van Iterson at the guitar and Ruud Jacobs on bass in Studio 44 in Monster ( The Netherlands) three months later.
Both trios are drummer-less; not by accident as this is a conscious choice. Peter Beets says about it: Playing without a drummer gives the music a new dimension. Due to the absence of drums you can hear the guitarist playing his guitar, you can feel the bass player slipping his fingers along the strings and the piano player touching the ivory.
Joe Cohn, yes the son of ....., is a skilled guitar player, nominated in Downbeat as the best guitar player. Reuben Rogers is known for his cooperation with Joshua Redman and for his performances with Dianne Reeves.
The Dutch rhythm section, needs no further introduction to the Dutch folks: Ruud Jacobs,The nestor in modern bass playing in The Netherlands, active since the 1950s when he played in the Pim Jacobs Trio, the trio lead by his brother. Martijn Van Iterson is, like Peter Beets, part of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw.
Most tracks on the album are standards : another conscious choice. Peter Beets didn't want overarranged tunes, but tunes that give the band members the possibility to fill in their own thoughts. Most tracks were recorded just after one or two rehearsals; this makes it a spontanious and lively album, like you should expect from a live performance.
The first album Peter made with his New York Trio was simply labeled New York Trio ( Criss Cross Jazz 1214) and released in 2001. That trio featured Peter at the piano, Rodney Whitaker bass and Willie Jones III on drums, then known as drummer in the Roy Hargrove Quintet. I like this CD since it was released; in the next years a follow up was made with ... page two and .. page three - two albums with his New York Trio I haven't heard yet. This new CD, New Groove, is a great successor in this series of trio albums. Find yourself a copy.

Gisteren werd de nieuwe CD van het Peter Beets Trio officieel gelanceerd tijdens een concert in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam. De nieuwe CD is getiteld New Groove met Peter Beets in twee verschilende trio's. De New York Trio opnamen werden opgenomen op 10 april 2007 in de Systems Two Recording Studios in New York met Peter Beets aan de piano, Joe Cohn op de gitaar en Reuben Rogers op bas. De opnamen voor zijn Nederlandse trio dateren van een kwart jaar later en werden opgenomen in Studio 44 in Monster met Martijn van Iterson op gitaaar en Ruud Jacobs op bas. Beide trio's hebben geen drummer. Een weloverwogen keus, legt Peter Beets uit. Als je zonder drummer speelt krijgt de muziek als het ware een extra dimensie. Doordat de drummer ontbreekt hoor je de gitarist spelen, voel je hoe de bassist met zijn vingers over de snaren gaat en hoe de pianist de toetsen indrukt. Joe Cohn, jawel de zoon van ....., is een ervaren muzikant, genomineerd als beste gitarist voor de Downbeat Poll. Reuben Rogers is bekend van de band van Joshua Redman en als bassist bij optredens met Dianne Reeves.
De Nederlandse ritmesectie behoeft, althans in de Lage Landen, geen nadere introductie meer: Ruud Jacobs, de Nederlandse nestor in modern bass playing is al actief vanaf de jaren vijftig in de trio's met zijn broer Pim. Martijn van Iterson maakt, evenals Peter Beets, deel uit van het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw.
De meeste nummers op deze CD zijn standards. Ook dit is weloverwogen: Peter Beets wilde geen over-gearrangeerde plaat maken, maar een plaat waarin de musici alle ruimte krijgen om te soleren. Voor de meeste nummers is dan ook maar één of twee keer gerepeteerd; het geeft de CD een spontaan en levendige indruk alsof je getuige van een live optreden bent.
Het eerste album dat Peter maakte met zijn New York Trio was eenvoudig getiteld New York Trio ( Criss Cross Jazz 1214) en werd uitgebracht in 2001. Op die plaat bestond het trio uit Peter aan de toetsen, Rodney Whitaker op bas en Willie Jones III op slagwerk, toen vooral bekend als vaste drummer bij Roy Hargrove. Deze plaat is nog steeds één van mijn favorieten, al zij gezegd dat ik ... page two en .. page three niet ken. Deze nieuwe plaat New Groove, is in ieder geval een waardige opvolger van de eerste, dus probeer hem te pakken te krijgen.
