Trombone Panorama

One of the most difficult instruments in jazz must be the trombone. Kai Winding was one of the most notable bop trombone players and he became famous playing that instrument in the Stan Kenton Band, but also in cooperation with Jay Jay Johnson, the other great trombonist. In 1956, when they had discontinued their Jay and Kai Band, Kai Winding founded his septet, which contained four trombones and a three men rhythm section. With this group they toured along university campus all over the country. Thanks to Lonehill Jazz we can enjoy this great septet again thanks to the reissue of Trombone Panorama by The Kai Winding Septet.
The front of the Kai Winding septet was a unique line of trombones, with Kai Winding, born in Aarhus, Denmark, but raised in the US, on trombone of course and his fellow trombonists Carl Fontana, Wayne Andre and Dick Lieb, the latter on bass trombone and baritone horn too. The rhythm section featured Roy Frazee at the piano, Kenny O'Brien on bass and Jack Franklin on drums.
This Trombone Panorama, their second album, has now been reissued entirely, including three previously unreleased tracks. The first track, titled Trombone Panorama, is a suite of more then 16 minutes, in which Kai presents a cross-section of various styles of trombone playing throughout the past few decades, as he announces on the record.
If you are an admirer of the trombone in jazz you can't miss this great reissue. What a sound - what a harmony !! - four trombones in the frontline gives a beautiful sound in tunes like The Preacher, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Show Me The Way To Go Home and a great arrangement on Yes You.

Eén van de moeilijkst te bespelen instrumenten in de jazz is ongetwijfeld de trombone. Kai Winding was één van die opmerkelijke bebop trombonisten en kreeg vooral bekendheid door zijn spel in het Stan Kenton orkest, maar ook door zijn samenwerking met Jay Jay Johnson, ook een groot trombonist, in hun band Jay and Kai. Toen in 1956 de groep Jay and Kai opgeheven werd, richtte Kai Winding zijn septet op, dat bestond uit vier trombones op de eerste rij en een ritmesectie van drie man. Hiermee trad hij vooral op op universiteitscampussen door het hele land. Dankzij Lonehill Jazz is dit fantastische septet nu weer op plaat te horen in hun heruitgave van de plaat Trombone Panorama door het Kai Winding Septet.
Dit septet heeft een bijzondere samenstelling: vier trombones, die samen het werk op de eerste rij mogen doen. Uiteraard Kai Winding, geboren in Aarhus, Denemarken, maar opgegroeid in de VS, op trombone en verder zijn collega-trombonisten Carl Fontana, Wayne Andre en Dick Lieb, de laatst genoemde ook op bastrombone en baritonhoorn. De ritmesectie bestaat uit Roy Frazee aan de piano, Kenny O'Brien op bas en Jack Franklin op slagwerk.
Deze plaat, Trombone Panorama, hun tweede plaat, is met deze heruitgave nu helemaal compleet, inclusief een drietal eerder onuitgegeven stukken. Het eerste nummer is een bijzondere: een suite van ruim zestien minuten waarop een presentatie van Kai zelf, a cross-section of various styles of trombone playing throughout the past few decades (= een overzicht van de verschillende trombonestijlen zoals die gespeeld werden gedurende de laatste jaren), zoals hij uitlegt op de plaat.
Als je van trombones in de jazz houdt kun je niet om deze prachtige plaat heen. Wat een schitterende klank, harmonie, hebben vier trombones samen.
