Vitor Assis Brasil - A Forgotten Alto Saxophone Player

VITOR ASSIS BRASIL - A FORGOTTEN ALTO SAXOPHONE PLAYER
Hans Koert
Some weeks ago I happened to find a CD titled Trajeto by Vitor Assis Brasil and I bought it because I learned from the liner notes that Claudio Roditi was one of the musicians playing on that record. Claudio Roditi is a Brazilian trumpet player, born in Rio de Janeiro, May 1946, who plays his instrument in a Brazilian-orientated style or in a straight-ahead hard bop style. I heard him in concert October 2004 at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in the southwest part of The Netherlands with his trio featuring Claudio Roditi, trumpet, flügelhorn and vocal ( Rapaz de bem), Klaus Ignatzek, piano and Jean Louis Rassinfosse, bass.
When I played the record I became fascinated by the music as played by the leader of the band, Vitor Assis Brasil. This unknown Brazilian alto saxophone player is an underestimated jazz musician now almost complete forgotten. He was born in Rio de Janeiro August 1945 as the oldest one of a twin; his younger brother Juan Carlos Assis Brasil would also become a jazz musician. Vitor, or Victor as he was called later, started to play the alto saxophone he received from an aunt at the age of 17 and got lessons from Paulo Moura. He became known thanks to jam sessions in the legendary Little Club in Copacabana, one of the breeding places for Bossa Nova music. He started to play at school concerts and tried to make a mix between Bossa Nova and Jazz.
In 1965 he was one of the musicians that played in the Clube de Jazz e Bossa and one day, one of the musicians to play there was the Austrian piano player Friedrich Gulde, who invited him to participate into an International Jazz Contest in Wien. It was his first time to play outside Brasil and he got the third prize for his sax playing and, later, in Berlin the first prize as a soloist. Thanks to these awards he decided to become a professional musician.
In 1966 he made his first record, titled Desenhos, with a quartet featuring Tenorio Junior at the piano, the 19 years young Edison Lôbo and Chico Batera, on drums, of course ( Bateria means drums in Portuguese). Tenorio Junior disappeared in Brasil and became one of the victims of the regime. On this album, now a collector's item, you can learn that Vitor has listened to John Coltrane and Phil Woods, who did influence him. He was able to study at the famous Berklee School of Music late 1960s for some years and there he founded his own band, with musicians like Claudio Roditi - the band that recorded the album Trajeto. A great album - different from the Bossa Nova records from that period. It contains jazz music influenced by Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk and the band sounds to me an entity; or, as I read somewhere: There's much greater subtlety and depth, and a more cohesive, controlled feel overall then in the ordinary Bossa Nova stuff of that period. Listen, for example to the first track Stolen Stuff - it sounds really great. Claudio Roditi is one of the players on this album, (except on Round About Midnight, which is played by a trio, with some good guitar playing by Helinho), only 23 years of age at that moment. I really like Roditi's warm hard bop trumpet playing, but also musicians like Edson Maciel, trombone player and bass player Sergio Barrroso are worth mentioning. He won an award at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969 being the best saxophone player of the festival. Studying in Berklee he was able to play with jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Richie Cole, Clark Terry, Chick Corea and Ron Carter.
In 1973 he returned to Brasil, still teaching about his music and musical roots like Wynton Marsalis is doing nowadays in the States. He became one of the most important jazz musicians of Brasil, fighting for the recognition of his music, the Brazilian jazz - without ignoring his Brazilian roots, but without any concessions to the Jazz music too. In 1978 his playing is a success at the Jazz Festival of Sao Paulo and, one of the visitors of that festival, Leonard Feathers said about him (quoted from a Brazilian interview): Victor Assis Brasil, um esplêndido saxofonista, não deixou que sua longa estada nos Estados Unidos confundisse seus valores, apresentando uma música firmemente plantada nos solos dos dois países. (= Vitor Assis Brasil, a great saxophone player, who lived and studied jazz music in the States for years, who plays his music founded in both cultures, without any concessions to its values.) His role of a pioneer is to be found in the music of a new generation of Brazilian jazz musicians like Claudio Roditi, who lives now in Europe most of the time.

He passed away in April 1981 due to rare complaints in the blood circulation. In his house, his twin brother John Carlos Assis Brasil, who became a known jazz piano player, found four hundred unpublished compositions after his brother passed away; for piano, orchestras, strings, pop music and jazz. John Carlos made a CD titled Self Portrait - Assis Brasil by Assis Brasil - Assis Brasil Quartet, an album I love to hear sometimes.
This alto saxophone player passed away only 35 years old - too young to be able to prove that he could have been developed to one of the greatest jazz alto saxophone player.

Vitor Assis Brasil - Een Vergeten Altsaxofonist

Vitor Assis Brasil - Een Vergeten Altsaxofonist ( Nederlands) Vitor Assis Brasil - A forgotten alto saxophone player (English)
( Naar een selectieve Vitor Assis Brasil discografie.)
VITOR ASSIS BRASIL - EEN VERGETEN ALTSAXOFONIST
Hans Koert
There's much greater subtlety and depth, and a more cohesive, controlled feel overall.

On the cover of the latest Jazzism magazine, one of the leading Dutch glossy jazz magazin
es, you can find a picture of Benjamin Herman who shows his latest Edison award, subtitled with the slogan: Hebbes, which could be translated as Got It! He received it for his album Campert - De tijd Duurt Eén Mens Lang, dedicated to the Dutch writer and poet Remco Campert. It's not
his first Edison award, but the third one. The first one was for the album BIG with the New Cool Collective (2000) and the second one was for his album Heterogenity (2005), made in cooperation with Misha Mengelberg. The Edison award is one of the eldest music awards in the world (the Grammy is only one year older) and the most important one for the Dutch music scene since 1960.The music for the Campert album was in fact used for a documentary around this author, augmented with some extra music to create a complete album.

Benjamin Herman has released a new album, titled Hypochristmastreefuzz which is dedicated to the music of Misha Mengelberg, the Dutch eminent grise on piano, master in improvisation, who started his career in the 1960s in the free jazz circuit. He developed into a unique composer in contemporary jazz. The album was released on the first of December 2008.

Last weekend, the 21st of December 2008, Benjamin Herman performed with his quartet in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in the south west part of The Netherlands. This concert, the last jazz concert for 2008 scedulded in this popular club, was complete dedicated to the music of Misha Mengelberg and for the musicians the final concert in a lengthy series of promo concerts. Benjamin Herman, who plays the alto saxophone, Anton Goudsmit on guitar, bass player Ernst Glerum and drummer Joost Patocka threw a party on stage before a mixed audience of different ages -
from young ( 5 years) to not so young anymore (70-plus).
Ernst Glerum ( Porgy en Bess Jazz Club - Terneuzen (The Netherlands) - December 2008) (photo courtesy Hans Koert)
In the first set, which opened with the tune Een Beetje Zenuwachtig (= A Bit Nervous), a typically Misha Mengelberg composition from the 1960s, which started as a sound check and developed to a swinging tune with a steady drive, contained several tunes from the new album like No Idea and De Sprong O Romantiek Der Hazen (=The Romantic Jump Of Hares), but also tunes from his popular album The Itch: Do The Roach, Arachibutyrophobia, about a rare peanut butter allergy and the Doris Day tune, made famous on a Columbia Record by the Harry James Orchestra in 1951, titled Would I Love You Love You Love You.
Joost Patocka ( Porgy en Bess Jazz Club - Terneuzen (The Netherlands) - December 2008) (photo courtesy Hans Koert)
In the second set Ernst Glerum (he really has a great sound) surprised with a great bass solo in Rollo III and Piet Noordijk was honoured in Misha's composition Blues After Piet. Both told me personally that there were no arguments), Benjamin blabs, referring to the controversial split in the Misha Mengelberg / Piet Noordijk Kwartet in early 1967 that set Misha and Piet at odds with each other. In Kwela P Kwana Misha honoured the late South African alto saxophone player Dudu Pukwana; the alto player with the great sound, with this humoristic composition. In Brozziman, a two-tones composition, Misha honoured the German saxophone player Peter Brötzmann, still alive, Joost Patocka googled for the latest information behind his drum set, an icon from the free jazz 1960s period, with his rough tone imitated by Benjamin in a great way.
Anton Goudsmit ( Porgy en Bess Jazz Club - Terneuzen (The Netherlands) - December 2008) (photo courtesy Hans Koert)
In Arm Wiel (= Poor Wheel), Misha made a bluesy tune about a thuiskomertje, a small spare wheel and, last but not least, the title song, the breath-taking Hypochristmastreefuzz, a composition Misha made for Eric Dolphy and played at the VARA radio program of the 2nd of June 1964, which would become famous as Dolphy's Last Session, as he passed away at the end of June 1964. The titled means, as Misha explained to Michiel De Ruyter, Troep onder de kerstboom, which can be translated as Rubbish under the Christmas tree. Thanks to Herman I think I should discuss this great "last" Eric Dolphy session in one of the coming blogs. The concert was finished with an improvisation to the tune C.C. Rider, made famous by Elvis Presley and played, referring to the title, in the key of C.

This concert by the Benjamin Herman Itch Quartet was the final concert of a series of jazz concerts for 2008 in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen - concerts with great names as Roy Hargrove ( he also will make his appearance next year), Monty Alexander, John Marshall, Pierre Courbois, Rein de Graaff with Pete Christlieb and Jeff Hamilton. You can find my complete list of concerts in the concert log for 2008.

Let Yourself Go: The Lives of Fred Hersch

Let Yourself Go: De Levens van Fred Hersch (Nederlands) Let Yourself Go: The Lives of Fred Hersch (English)

( To a Fred Hersch Discography.)
LET YOURSELF GO - THE LIVES OF FRED HERSCH - JAZZ PIANO PLAYER
Hans Koert
A few weeks ago the documentary "Let Yourself Go'- The Lives of Fred Hersch has been released in Cologne, Germany. This Aha!DVD production was made by Katja Duregger, Journalistin, Autorin and Regisseurin ( = journalist, writer and producer) as she labels herself, who also made video productions about Die Junge Deutsche Jazz Szene ( = the young German jazz scene ), Kronos Quartet meets Bollywood and "Fünf Farben Jazz - Mangelsdorffs selbstbewusste Erben". This Fred Hersch production, a so-called Modular DVD, as she names it, contains several aspects, the "lives", of jazz piano player Fred Hersch, in seperate modules, like "Let Yourself Go", the main movie, "Listen" about Fred Hersch as a musician and composer; "To Tell a Story" about Fred Hersch as a Jazz teacher and "Always There" about the fight agains his HIV and AIDS infection. The last part contains fragments from concerts in Antwerp, Belgium (2007), Kalamazoo - Michigan (USA) (2006) and at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
Fred Hersch (photo courtesy Matthew Sussman)

Fred Hersch was born in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) in October 1955 and started his career with guitarist Cal Collins playing in Cincinnati. He studied music at the New England Conservatory. In 1977 he worked with Art Farmer, who had returned to the States after a ten years stay in Europe ( Fred Hersch plays the piano on the CTI album Yama) and toured with Sam Jones, Billy Harper, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz.
I found a fragment of the Art Farmer Quartet, featuring Art Farmer flügelhorn, Fred Hersch, piano; Dennis Irwin, bass; Billy Hart, drums playing the Charlie Parker composition Red Cross. ( ca. 1982)

In the 1980s Fred Hersch becomes part of the Mel Lewis Orchestra and plays with Eddie Daniels and Toots Thielemans. He starts his own trio, which lasts up until today. In the 1980s Fred Hersch becomes an active member of the gay scene and gets infected; he learned that he was HIV positive. In the documentary and the module "Always There" he speaks unrestricted about this period and this life-threatening infection, which catched him twenty years ago. It's a bit a miracle that he's still around as most of his infected friends are now gone. He tells how his HIV-infections changed his entire life: HIV changed everything, absolutely everything. It forced us gay men to grow up in a very short time ...... AIDS forced us to think about the consequences in a very cruel way.

Fred Hersch ( photo courtesy David Bartolomi )

He was one of the first jazz musicians to speak in public about his homosexuality and HIV infection, which made him a leading figurehead of those infected and a gay activist. I just came out, he explains in the film, because I was tired of thinking: Who knows and who doesn't. This takes away so much energy and I wanted to use this energy for my art and to be free from that. Being infected gives him, curiously, a lot of energy to make his music. He made benefit albums for the organization `Classical Action - Performing Arts Against AIDS, like Last Night When We Were Young - The Ballad album; albums with musicians like Toots Thielemans, Mark Murphy, Phil Woods, Jim Hall, Lee Konitz, Kenny Barron, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Lovano and Gary Burton. For each sold Let Yourself Go DVD one euro will be gifted to the German AIDS-Stiftung.
Fred Hersch ( photo courtesy David Bartolomi )

Four concert fragments are available on the DVD, two with his trio, featuring Drew Gress on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums and two solo. In recent years he often played solo piano, on records and live, like the 2006 Valantine track, recorded at the Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo or the concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. To me chords are not stack of things, he said about being a soloist: each note in a cord is a voice that wants to move somewhere. He is active in producing albums and as a composer for ballet music. I love to share a fragment I found of a Fred Hersch composition Red Autumn, danced by Tawny Chapman and William Lu.

This documentary brings a fascinating view of the many lives, sides, of Fred Hersch: Fred as a musician ( why do I have but few records from him? ) playing in his introvert style, like Bill Evans or Brad Mehldau; as a teacher in master classes; as the HIV infected which the "cocktail", those terrible pills, the AIDS medication day after day; with his relatives, his partner ...... This documentary is a very personal document of a great piano player, fighting against time with a life-threading infection as the sword of Damocles. A documentary you should see !!

Let Yourself Go: De Levens van Fred Hersch

Let Yourself Go: De Levens van Fred Hersch (Nederlands) Let Yourself Go: The Lives of Fred Hersch (English)
( Naar een Fred Hersch Discografie.)
LET YOURSELF GO - DE LEVENS VAN FRED HERSCH - JAZZPIANIST
Hans Koert

It forced us gay men to grow up in a very short time ...... ( = HIV veranderde alles, echt alles. ). AIDS forced us to think about the consequences in a very cruel way.( = AIDS drukte ons meedogenloos met de neus op de feiten.)

This takes away so much energy and I wanted to use this energy for my art and to be free from that.

To me chords are not stack of things, (= Voor mij zijn akkoorden geen stapels noten) zegt hij over het solospelen, Each note in a cord is a voice that wants to move somewhere.

Deze schitterende documentaire brengt op een fascinerende wijze "de levens" van Fred Hersch in beeld; een bevlogen man, die heerlijke introverte muziek á la Bill Evans of Brad Mehldau speelt ( Waarom heb ik maar zo weinig van Fred Hersch op CD?);
