Chick Corea + Origin

During the first week of January 1998, ten tears ago, Chick Corea + Origin performed at the Blue Note Club in New York City. These concerts, four days long, two shows a day, have been recorded on 6 CDs, titled Chick Corea + Origin - A Week At The Blue Note, almost seven hours of music.
Chick Corea, born in June 1941 in Chelsea MA (USA) has made an enormous career, which couldn't be in an abstract of a few lines. This set of records was made by his acoustic sextet, titled Origin. The members of that band were Chick Corea on piano, Steve Davis on trombone, Steve Wilson and Bob Sheppard on reeds, Avishal Cohen on bass and Adam Cruz on drums. This quartet featured some young talented players. Maybe inspired by live recordings as Miles Davis at the Plugged Nickel or ... At The Blackhawk (San Francisco) these Blue Note Club concerts were released entirely. You could wonder what kind of collectors are interested in such an amount of music, eight shows, with almost each tune repeated in the next shows. Some tunes are recorded three times, like Bewitched and Matrix, others even five times, like the brief Say It Again.
Only the dedicated jazz scholar or music student will be interested to follow the developments during these four days; to compare the different versions of Say It Again. Of course I listened to all concerts and enjoyed what I heard, but never chronologically, so I didn't recognize any development at all. But nevertheless I like it. There has been a Japanese CD, titled Chick Corea - Origin and in small print Live At The Blue Note. This CD contains a selection of the best tunes played during these above mentioned eight shows. These are the tunes:
If you compare the playing time of the tunes you will learn that this selection is not on the "complete" 6CD collection of A Week At The Blue Note. I wonder how complete is complete? It reminds me of the Miles Davis live recordings, where the LP versions weren't as complete as everybody had thought, when the CD versions was reissued. Tunes had been shortened, or changed places.

Tijdens de eerste week van januari 1998, tien jaar geleden, trad Chick Corea + Origin op in de Blue Note Club in New York City. Deze concerten, vier dagen lang, twee shows per dag, zijn opgenomen en uitgebracht op 6 CDs, getiteld Chick Corea + Origin - A Week At The Blue Note, bijna zeven uur muziek.
Chick Corea, geboren in juni 1941 in Chelsea MA (Verenigde Staten) heeft al een enorme carriere achter de rug; te veel om even in een paar regels neer te zetten. Deze serie platen werd opgenomen met zijn akoestische sextet, genaamd Origin. De leden van die groep waren Chick Corea op piano, Steve Davis op trombone, Steve Wilson en Bob Sheppard op rieten, Avishal Cohen op bas en Adam Cruz op slagwerk. Het kwartet bevat een aantal jonge getallenteerde spelers. Waarschijnlijk geinspireerd door de liveopnamen van Miles Davis at the Plugged Nickel of .... Live At the Blackhawk in San Francisco, werd deze serie Blue Note Club concerten vastgelegd. Je kunt je afvragen wat voor soort verzamelaars zitten te wachten op zo'n hoeveelheid muziek, acht shows, met bijna elk nummer wel één of meer keer herhaald. Sommige nummers vind je zelfs drie keer terug, zoals Bewitched en het nummer Matrix; één zelfs vijf keer: Say It Again.
Alleen de doorgewinterde en gedreven jazzonderzoeker of muziekstudent, zal geintereseerd zijn om de muzikale ontwikkelingen dag na dag, optreden na optreden te kunnen volgen; om de verschillende versies van Say It Again noot voor noot te vergelijken. Natuurlijk heb ik alle concerten beluisterd en genoten van wat ik gehoord heb; zij het niet chronologisch. Ontwikkelingen in de muziek heb ik dus niet opgemerkt. Er is een Japanese CD uitgave, getiteld Chick Corea - Origin en dan met kleine lettertjes onderaan Live At The Blue Note. Deze CD bevat een selectie van de beste nummers, die gespeeld werden tijdens deze week van optredens in januari. Dit zijn de nummers:

Well, it is said that the music of the versions of the single CD set is excellent, even better then the versions on the 6 CD set, so ...... if you like the music of Chick Corea and you're not a scholar or his/her student in music, try to get yourself The Best Of ..... CD.

Vergelijk de nummers hierboven maar eens met de complete tracklist van de 6 CD set.
Als je de speelduur van deze nummers vergelijkt met die van de 6 CD uitvoeringen dan ontdek je dat deze "complete" set blijkbaar niet zo compleet is als je mag veronderstellen. De "enkele" CD bevat uitvoeringen, die niet op de integrale versie staan. Dus hoe compleet is compleet in dit geval? Het doet me denken aan de Miles Davis live opnamen, die op Lp verschenen waren en bij de herziene uitvoeringen op CD ineens minder volledig bleken (soms zelfs ingekort) en zelfs in een andere volgorde opgenomen waren.
Ik heb horen verluiden dat de "versies" op de "enkele" CD Chick Corea - Origin beter zijn dan die op de 6 CD-set, dus ..... als je geen professor in de muziekwetenschappen bent of zijn/haar student, neem dan genoegen met de enkele CD "The Best Of ....... ".
