Mingus Plays Piano

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Charles Mingus is one of those colourful figures in jazz history. His life, his music and the stories around his performances feed a lot of stories. He was a great composer and in the early 1960s his most complex creations were made, like Meditations on Integration or The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. In 1962 he started a short cooperation with Impulse where he recorded three important albums, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus and the special Mingus Plays Piano. Some important tunes released on these three Impulse albums are in the Impulse compilation album Charles Mingus - The Impulse Story.

I was fascinated and surprised to hear Mingus play the piano. Not that he is as good as Monk or Powell - oh no, not at all. It sounds as if he is sitting behind the keyboard while composing one of his tunes.

Phil Kurnit tells how the Mingus Plays Piano LP was born. He tells how he heard someone playing the piano someday, while in the office of ABC studios. Somebody was playing the piano in there very hauntingly - very beautifully. Then it would stop, and start again. It didn't sound like practicing. It sounded like somebody was just thinking on the piano. ... I looked in the music room and it was pitch black. The lights weren't on. So I went into Thiele's office and said "Who's playing in there?""It's Charlie Mingus. A very close friend of his died". I never knew who he was grieving over. But about a half-hour later Thiele said "Charles, let's go into a studio."

That's how Mingus Plays Piano was born.

One of the tunes from the album is Body and Soul as played by Mingus at the piano. It fascinated me and I love to hear the complete Mingus Plays Piano album sometimes.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.

Vooral het bekende Body and Soul sprak me erg aan.
