Brasil Guitar Magic

This CD, released in 2000, titled Brasil Guitar Magic ! is a compilation CD with tunes played by two great Brazilian jazz guitar players, Laurindo Almeida and Baden Powell. Although the title suggests that they play duets, that's not true. The first eight tracks are played by Laurindo Almeida and the last nine by Baden Powell.

In the 1960s, when these tunes probable were recorded, this kind of fingerstyle guitar playing became very popular thanks to the classical trained Brazilian guitar players like Bola Sete, Baden Powell and Laurindo Almeida. The first one, Bola Sete, was a complete new name for me ( what a shame ) until I found a film fragment from a Ralph Gleason's 1963 Jazzcasual TV program. You can find this Bola Sete contribution in my
350 x Keepswinging site.

Both Laurindo Almeida as Baden Powell were classical trained guitarists, who played their jazz-inspired tunes in Europe. Laurindo Almeida ( 1917 - 1995 ) moved to Europe in the 1940s and played in the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Baden Powell ( 1937 - 2000), in fact his name was Roberto Baden Powell de Aquino, made his first recordings in Europe during the 1960, while he had made several compositions, together with the poet Vinicus de Moraes in Brazil.

Both played the so-called seven string guitar, a Brazilian instrument used in choro music too, as an instrument that allows to play bass lines and solo on the same instrument. In the early 1940s George Van Eps started to play his fingerstyle jazz guitar using four instead of three fingers. This style of guitar playing became very popular and was not only used in jazz or Brazilian music, but also by musicians like Chet Atkins and Merle Travis. Later guitar players like Guy Van Duser, Stefan Grossman and Egberto Gismondi played in that style; in The Netherlands Ton Van Bergeyk, now the guitar player of the Dutch Swing College Band, used to play in this fingerstyle jazz style.

The 17 tracks on this compilation seem to be a hodge-podge of 1960s tunes, recorded by these two guitar man. If someone can give me the recording dates of the tunes, please forward it. This is the track list:

Laurindo Almeida:
1. Samba medley 5:20
2. O barquinho 4:08
3. The busy bee 1:19
4. Canto do ossanha 5:31
5. Samba triste 3:19
6. Escadoo 3:06
7. Air on a G string 4:51
8. Dorival 5:05

Baden Powell
9. Garota de Ipanema 2:59
10.Berimbau 3:04
11.Euridice 3:02
12.Deve ser amor 3:53
13.Choro para metronome 2:57
14.Berceuse a jussara 2:33
15.Adagio 3:07
16.Prelude 2:50
17.Samba en preludio 3:31

Both guitar players are skilled musicians - personally I like the music of Laurindo Almeida the best, but Baden Powell is a great guitar player too, but I don't like the vocalized versions of some classical themes in this compilation ( like Adagio)

I found two fragments that show the music of both guitar players - The Laurindo Almeida fragment is from a 1960s Jazz 625 program ( an English jazz program for television) and the Baden Powell shot seems from that period too. Enjoy it.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Laurindo Almeida:
1. Samba medley 5:20
2. O barquinho 4:08
3. The busy bee 1:19
4. Canto do ossanha 5:31
5. Samba triste 3:19
6. Escadoo 3:06
7. Air on a G string 4:51
8. Dorival 5:05

Baden Powell
9. Garota de Ipanema 2:59
10.Berimbau 3:04
11.Euridice 3:02
12.Deve ser amor 3:53
13.Choro para metronome 2:57
14.Berceuse a jussara 2:33
15.Adagio 3:07
16.Prelude 2:50
