Roy Hargrove in concert

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
On Friday night, the 7th of March 2008 the Roy Hargrove Quintet performed at a packed Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, this weekend the place to be in Holland, in the far south western part of the country, near the Belgian border.
Roy Hargrove and his men, celebrated their 13th concert in their beloved club with a dynamic concert before an enthusiast audience.
It was not the first time that this quintet visited Porgy en Bess; the were here before in 2007, due to the festivities of the clubs 50th birthday, on the 19th of April 2007, so it felt like meeting old friends: Roy Hargrove on trumpet and flügelhorn, no singing this time, a modest Justin Robinson on alto saxophone, Gerald Clayton at the piano, Danton Boller on bass and the energetic Montez Coleman on drums.
In two lenghtly sets they played, almost without breaks, and without any titles announcement a great show on wich Montez Coleman once more showed that he is a very energetic drummer. This time he kept his bass drumhead, but broke his foot pedal. Roy played, of course, some great ballads on flügelhorn and played on trumpet several pieces using a harmon mute like Miles Davis used in the early days.
It was exciting to learn that Roy and his men played some calypso and soul tunes, one dedicated to the late Sam Cooke. At the end of the last set they played a fast killerdiller version of the title song of Roy's last album, Nothing Serious, before Roy invited Ramón Valle on stage to participate on piano. Ramón Valle, Cuban born now living in Europe, will be his associate on their new album, recorded in New York City, that will be out soon.

If you love to see Roy Hargrove in concert and you happen to be in the southwest part of The Netherlands, you're a lucky guy, because tonight, Saturday the 8th of March, they play an extra concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club, this weekend the centre of jazz - the place to be !!

Both Stan Kenton as Sam Taylor used the nickname THE MAN. Most people who sent their suggestions only mentioned one name. Well, here's another one - an easy one today. Who was called Cannonball and ..... why?

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
