A few weeks ago the documentary "Let Yourself Go'- The Lives of Fred Hersch has been released in Cologne, Germany. This Aha!DVD production was made by Katja Duregger, Journalistin, Autorin and Regisseurin ( = journalist, writer and producer) as she labels herself, who also made video productions about Die Junge Deutsche Jazz Szene ( = the young German jazz scene ), Kronos Quartet meets Bollywood and "Fünf Farben Jazz - Mangelsdorffs selbstbewusste Erben". This Fred Hersch production, a so-called Modular DVD, as she names it, contains several aspects, the "lives", of jazz piano player Fred Hersch, in seperate modules, like "Let Yourself Go", the main movie, "Listen" about Fred Hersch as a musician and composer; "To Tell a Story" about Fred Hersch as a Jazz teacher and "Always There" about the fight agains his HIV and AIDS infection. The last part contains fragments from concerts in Antwerp, Belgium (2007), Kalamazoo - Michigan (USA) (2006) and at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.

Fred Hersch was born in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) in October 1955 and started his career with guitarist Cal Collins playing in Cincinnati. He studied music at the New England Conservatory. In 1977 he worked with Art Farmer, who had returned to the States after a ten years stay in Europe ( Fred Hersch plays the piano on the CTI album Yama) and toured with Sam Jones, Billy Harper, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz.

In the 1980s Fred Hersch becomes part of the Mel Lewis Orchestra and plays with Eddie Daniels and Toots Thielemans. He starts his own trio, which lasts up until today. In the 1980s Fred Hersch becomes an active member of the gay scene and gets infected; he learned that he was HIV positive. In the documentary and the module "Always There" he speaks unrestricted about this period and this life-threatening infection, which catched him twenty years ago. It's a bit a miracle that he's still around as most of his infected friends are now gone. He tells how his HIV-infections changed his entire life: HIV changed everything, absolutely everything. It forced us gay men to grow up in a very short time ...... AIDS forced us to think about the consequences in a very cruel way.

He was one of the first jazz musicians to speak in public about his homosexuality and HIV infection, which made him a leading figurehead of those infected and a gay activist. I just came out, he explains in the film, because I was tired of thinking: Who knows and who doesn't. This takes away so much energy and I wanted to use this energy for my art and to be free from that. Being infected gives him, curiously, a lot of energy to make his music. He made benefit albums for the organization `Classical Action - Performing Arts Against AIDS, like Last Night When We Were Young - The Ballad album; albums with musicians like Toots Thielemans, Mark Murphy, Phil Woods, Jim Hall, Lee Konitz, Kenny Barron, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Lovano and Gary Burton. For each sold Let Yourself Go DVD one euro will be gifted to the German AIDS-Stiftung.

Four concert fragments are available on the DVD, two with his trio, featuring Drew Gress on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums and two solo. In recent years he often played solo piano, on records and live, like the 2006 Valantine track, recorded at the Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo or the concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. To me chords are not stack of things, he said about being a soloist: each note in a cord is a voice that wants to move somewhere. He is active in producing albums and as a composer for ballet music. I love to share a fragment I found of a Fred Hersch composition Red Autumn, danced by Tawny Chapman and William Lu.

This documentary brings a fascinating view of the many lives, sides, of Fred Hersch: Fred as a musician ( why do I have but few records from him? ) playing in his introvert style, like Bill Evans or Brad Mehldau; as a teacher in master classes; as the HIV infected which the "cocktail", those terrible pills, the AIDS medication day after day; with his relatives, his partner ...... This documentary is a very personal document of a great piano player, fighting against time with a life-threading infection as the sword of Damocles. A documentary you should see !!

Een paar weken geleden werd de documentaire "Let Yourself Go'- Die Leben Des Jazz Pianisten Fred Hersch ( = vrij vertaald De Levens van Fred Hersch, Jazz Pianist) uitgebracht in Keulen. Deze Aha!DVD productie ( volledig in het Engels of met Duitse voice-over) werd gemaakt door Katja Duregger, journalist, schrijver en regiseur, die al eerder videoproducties uitbracht over onderwerpen, gerelateerd aan de jazz, zoals een documentaire over jonge jazzmusici in Duitsland, een film getiteld Kronos Quartet meets Bollywood en Fünf Farben Jazz - Mangelsdorffs selbstbewusste Erben. Deze documentaire rond de Amerikaanse jazzpianist Fred Hersch is het best te omschrijven als een Modular DVD, zoals ze het noemt, een serie van modules, korte documentaires, die samen een beeld gven van "de levens", van verschillende aspecten, van Fred Hersch. Zo vind je er, behalve een dertig minuten durende hoofddocumentaire Let Youself Go, een aantal modules zoals "Listen" waarin Fred Hersch belicht wordt als musicus en componist; "To Tell a Story" over zijn werk als jazzleraar en "Always There" over zijn strijd tegen zijn HIV / AIDS besmetting. En tenslotte nog een module, waarin een viertal concertfragmenten ( Antwerpen (2007), Kalamazoo (Michigan - USA)(2006) en het Bimhuis in Amsterdam) gepresenteerd worden.

Fred Hersch werd geboren in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) in oktober 1955 en begon zijn carriere bij gitarist Cal Collins in zijn geboortestad Cincinnati. Hij studeerde aan het New England Conservatory. In 1977 speelde hij bij Art Farmer, die na een verblijf van tien jaar in Europa weer teruggekeerd was naar zijn geboorteland ( Fred Hersch speelde o.a. mee op het album Yama) en reisde rond met musici als Sam Jones, Billy Harper, Joe Henderson en Stan Getz.
Ik vond een fragment van een optreden met het Art Farmer Quartet, waarin we Art Farmer herkennen op bügel, Fred Hersch aan de piano; Dennis Irwin, bass en Billy Hart, slagwerk in de Charlie Parker compositie: Red Cross. ( ca. 1982)

In de jaren tachtig speelt Fred Hersch in het Mel Lewis Orchestra en begeleidt hij Eddie Daniels en onze eigen Toots Thielemans. Hij richt zijn eigen trio op, dat tot op de dag van vandaag bij elkaar is. In deze periode maakt de homo-scene in de Verenigde Staten een heftige periode door en Fred Hersch doet daar actief in mee; het levert hem een HIV infectie op. In de documentaire en in de module "Always There" vertelt hij openhartig over deze periode en deze levensbedreigende infectie, die hem al twintig jaar in zijn greep heeft. Eigenlijk is het een wonder, dat hij nog steeds rondloopt, aangezien al zijn toen besmette vrienden reeds lang overleden zijn aan AIDS. Hij legt uit hoe deze HIV-besmetting zijn hele leven bepaalt: HIV changed everything, absolutely everything. It forced us gay men to grow up in a very short time ...... ( = HIV veranderde alles, echt alles. Deze besmetting maakte ons volwassen in een erg korte tijd ... ). AIDS forced us to think about the consequences in a very cruel way.( = AIDS drukte ons meedogenloos met de neus op de feiten.)

Hij was één van de eerste jazzmusici, die zo openlijk over zijn geaardheid en besmetting sprak in het openbaar, waardoor hij een leidende rol kreeg toebedeeld in de gay-scene. I just came out ( = Ik ben er gewoon voor uitgekomen), vertelt hij in de film, because I was tired of thinking: Who knows and who doesn't.( = omdat ik moe werd van het steeds maar moeten denken: wie weet 't en wie weet 't niet). This takes away so much energy and I wanted to use this energy for my art and to be free from that. (= Dat kostte me zoveel energie, dat ik veel liever in mijn muziek wilde stoppen). Het feit dat hij besmet is, geeft hem, hoe vreemd het ook moge klinken, een heleboel energie die hij in zijn muziek kan steken. Hij maakte verschillende albums waarvoor de opbrengt voor een deel ten goede kwam aan Classical Action - Performing Arts Against AIDS, (bijvoorbeel Last Night When We Were Young - The Ballad album); albums met musici als Toots Thielemans, Mark Murphy, Phil Woods, Jim Hall, Lee Konitz, Kenny Barron, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Lovano en Gary Burton. Van elke verkochte Let Yourself Go DVD overigens, gaat één euro naar de Deutsche AIDS-Stiftung.

Op de DVD staan vier nummers, die opgenomen zijn tijdens optredens: twee met zijn trio, bestaande uit hemzelf aan de piano, Drew Gress op bas en Nasheet Waits op slagwerk. Tegenwoordig speelt hij ook vaak solo, zowel op platen als op concerten, zoals in de twee andere fragmenten op de Universiteit van Michigan in Kalamazoo en een concert in het BIMhuis in Amsterdam. To me chords are not stack of things, (= Voor mij zijn akkoorden geen stapels noten) zegt hij over het solospelen, Each note in a cord is a voice that wants to move somewhere. (= Elke noot in een akkoord is een stem die zich wil laten horen). Hij is ook aktief als producer van platen voor anderen, m.n. zangeressen en hij maakt muziek voor ballet. Ik vond een fragment van een balletuitvoering, waarvoor hij de muziek schreef: Red Autumn, uitgevoerd door Tawny Chapman en William Lu.

Deze schitterende documentaire brengt op een fascinerende wijze "de levens" van Fred Hersch in beeld; een bevlogen man, die heerlijke introverte muziek á la Bill Evans of Brad Mehldau speelt ( Waarom heb ik maar zo weinig van Fred Hersch op CD?);

en bevlogen leraar tijdens masterclasses, thuis met zijn partner en als AIDS patient, wiens leven afhankelijk is van een zak vol pillen, those terrible pills, de cocktail van medicijnen, die hem op de been houdt. Deze documentaire brengt met recht de verschillende levens van Fred Hersch in beeld; alle facetten worden uitgebreid belicht.

Een persoonlijk document van een getalenteerde jazzpianist vechtend tegen de tijd ......... tegen de dood, die als een zward van Damocles boven zijn hoofd hangt. Muziek die je gehoord moet hebben - beelden die je niet mag missen.

Een FRED HERSCH DISCOGRAFIE ( Terug naar het begin van dit artikel ) Op de website van Fred Hersch staat een goed gedocumenteerde lijst met platen, waarop hij als leider, of als leider samen met anderen, als belangrijke solist of "slechts" als begeleider te horen is.
