Ben Webster

Today one of the first recordings made by Ben Webster after he had moved to Europe late 1964. I found myself a copy of the well known LP Blue Light released by Black Lion and Polydor.
In 1964 Ben Webster had lost his popularity in the USA because jazz was no longer popular music; Rock and Roll was top of the bill. Ben had sever financial problems, because he spent more money than he earned and didn't found gigs, because he asked too much money to perform. It was a luck for him that Ronnie Scott, the famous London saxophone player asked him to come to London for an engagement in his Ronny Scott Jazz Club for one month and in December 1964 Ben shipped in in New York heading for London. He didn't like to fly by plane, so he took the boat. On the 20th of December 1964 he played with Stan Tracey at the piano, Rick Laird on bass and Jackie Dougan on drums at the Marquee Club in London for the BBC TV program Jazz 625. It is almost moving to see how nervous he was when Steve Race interviews him. He plays the tune Night In Tunesia with Ronnie Scott as special guest on tenor sax. The program was broadcast on the national BBC network on the 16th of January 1965.

Ben Webster played for one month at the Ronnie Scott Jazz Club and enjoyed London. He learned that he was still the big star, so when the gig was over he didn't return to the States, but took some more gigs in England, Sweden, Norway and finally found a new home in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he met Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Alex Riel, both 24 years old.

With piano player Kenny Drew, also an American who lived in Copenhagen, Ben founded the Ben Webster - Kenny Drew Trio, which performed in the Jazzhus Montmartre. On the 6th of February 1965 they recorded five tracks for the Blue Light album: Autumn Leaves - Stardust - What's New - Easy To Love and Yesterdays; all standards. He lived for some time in Copenhagen, made some tours to places like Paris, London, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Manchester, and recorded with the Arnvid Meyer 's Orchestra, in fact a sextet. Some of these recordings are on the album too. Arnvid Meyer, who passed away 10 months ago ( August 2007), 80 years old, was a Danish trumpet player and bandleader who accompanied and recorded numerous US guests, like Benny Carter, Bill Coleman, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. His maistream sextet sounded a bit like Ellington's small 1930s groups, Ben recorded with in the early 1940s.

Ben would never return to the US and stayed in Europe, living in both Copenhagen and Amsterdam. About his time in Amsterdam Johan Van Der Keuken made a great documentary, titled Big Ben. You can read more about it in my contibution The Secret of Mrs. Hartloper.

Vandaag één van de eerste platen, die Ben Webster maakte toen hij naar Europa verhuisd was, eind 1964. Ik vond een exemplaar van de bekende LP Blue Light uitgebracht op Black Lion en Polydor.
In 1964 was de populariteit van Ben Webster in Amerika flink gedaald omdat het publiek uitgekeken was op zijn muziek en jazz niet langer populair was; rock and roll was top of the bill. Ben Webster had ernstige financiële problemen omdat zijn uitgaven patroon niet overeenkwam met zijn inkomsten. Hij kreeg ook steeds minder aanbiedingen voor optredens omdat de gage die hij vroeg veel te hoog was. Hij was dan ook blij toen eind 1964 Ronnie Scott, een Engelse saxofonist en bekend om zijn jazzclub, hem een optreden van een maand aanbood in London. In december 1964 stapte Ben aan boord van de boot( vliegen vond hij maar niks) dat hem naar London bracht. Op 20 december 1964 speelt hij met Stan Tracey aan de piano, Rick Laird op bas en Jackie Dougan op slagwerk in de Marquee Club in London voor het BBC TV programma Jazz 625. Het is haast ontroerend om te zien hoe zenuwachtig Ben was voor dit concert, maar vooral voor het interview met de presentator Steve Race. Hij speelt o.a. nummer Night In Tunesia met Ronnie Scott als speciale gast op tenorsax. Het programma werd uitgezonden op de nationale Britse televisie voor de BBC op 16 januari 1965.

Ben Webster speelde een maand lang in de Ronnie Scott Jazz Club en genoot van zijn verblijf in London. Hier was hij nog steeds de grote ster en daar genoot hij zichtbaar van. Toen de serie optredens op hun eind liepen keerde hij dan ook niet terug naar de VS, maar nam hij andere optredens aan in Engeland, Zweden, Noorwegen en belandde tenslotte in Kopenhagen, Denemarken. Deze stad zou zijn tweede thuis worden. Hij ontmoette er de jonge bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen en slagwerker Alex Riel, beide 24 jaar oud.
Samen met pianist Kenny Drew, ook een Amerikaan, die in Europa was blijven plakken, richtte Ben het Ben Webster - Kenny Drew Trio op, waarmee hij optrad in o.a. het Jazzhus Montmartre. Op 6 februari 1965 namen ze vijf nummers op voor dit Blue Light album: Autumn Leaves - Stardust - What's New - Easy To Love en Yesterdays; allemaal standards. Hij bleef lange tijd in Kopenhagen, maakte af en toe uitstapjes naar Parijs, Londen, Stockholm, Amsterdam en Manchester, waar hij optrad en maakte opnamen in Kopenhagen met Arnvid Meyer's Orchestra, eigenlijk een sextet. Deze opnamen staan voor een deel ook op deze Blue Light LP. Arnvid Meyer, die vorig jaar op 80-jarige leeftijd overleed ( augustus 2007) was een Deense trompettist en bandleider, die ontelbare Amerikaanse musici, op tournee door Europa, begeleidde, zoals Benny Carter, Bill Coleman, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins en Ben Webster. Zijn maistream swing sextet klonk een beetje als de kleine Duke Ellington groepen uit de jaren dertig; het Ellington orkest - de band, waar Ben Webster begin jaren veertig in speelde.

Ben Webster zou nooit meer terugkeren naar de Verenigde Staten. Hij had het hier naar de zin en bleef, beurtelings in Kopenhagen en Amsterdam wonen. Over zijn verblijf in Amsterdam is een schitterende film gemaakt door Johan Van Der Keuken getiteld Big Ben. Ik heb daar iets over verteld in de bijdrage The Secret of Mrs. Hartloper (= Het Geheim van Mevr. Hartloper)
Ik wil deze bijdrage graag afsluiten met een schitterend fragment van een informeel optreden waarschijnlijk thuis bij Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen in Kopenhagen met Kenny Drew op piano en Niels-Henning op bas, Ben op tenorsax en Ole Streenberg op slagwerk.

JAZZ 625: Last week I presented several rather unknown JAZZ 625 programs as released by the BBC during the 1960s. These popular JAZZ 625 programs are very well preserved and contain a treasure of great jazz performances. Last week I concentrated on British artists like Bill Le Sage, Victor Feldman, Johnny Scott and this time Tubby Hayes. Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes
The Jazz 625 programs with Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster, Thelonious Monk and Erroll Garner are known to most jazz collectors, but Terry Henebery, the producer of the shows, also sceduled English jazz artists for his weekly program. Today the Tubby Hayes Quintet, not a bit, with a great fragment ............

Tubby Hayes was born in London January 1935 and passed away in June 1973. In the early 1950s he started to play in the Kenny Baker Sextet and played his tenor saxophone in the orchestras of Bert Ambrose, Teddy Brown, Vic Lewis and Roy Fox. In 1955 he founded his own octet. In 1957 he became a member and co-leader of the Ronnie Scott Quintet, named The Jazz Couriers. During the early 1960 Tubby Hayes went to the States for a tour and played with artists like Clark Terry, Horace Parlan, Roland Kirk, James Moody and Louis Hayes to name some. In London he had formed his own big band and with that orchestra he was to be seen in numerous TV programs like Jazz 625. Enjoy the fragments, recorded on the 5th of May 1964.

OSCAR ALEMÁN: During his stay in Europe, Oscar Alemán was a regular member of Josephine Baker's orchestra on and off throughout the 1930s - on her tours he even was musical director of the 16 piece band, The Baker Boys. When not performing with Baker, Alemán had a second career as a freelance musician, like the Jean, Jac & Jo vocal trio, also members of the Josephine Baker organisation) besides leading his own bands in Paris and taking part in gigs and recording sessions by others as well. Around 1935 Alemán had the guitar chair for some time in the orchestra led by the American entertainer and bandleader, Freddy Taylor.

JAZZ 625: Afgelopen week presenteerde ik verschillende tamelijk onbekende fragmenten uit afleveringen van het populaire BBC jazzprogramma uit de jaren zestig, JAZZ 625. Deze JAZZ 625 programma's zijn goed bewaard gebleven en bevatten een schat aan jazzbeelden uit de jaren zestig. Afgelopen week richtte ik mijn aandacht vooral op de Engelse artiesten, die door de producer Terry Henebery gecontracteerd werden, zoals Bill Le Sage, Victor Feldman, Johnny Scott en deze keer Tubby Hayes.

Tubby Hayes werd geboren in London in januari 1935 en overleed in juni 1973. Begin jaren vijftig speelde hij in het Kenny Baker Sextet en tenorsax in de orkesten van Bert Ambrose, Teddy Brown, Vic Lewis en Roy Fox. In 1955 richtte hij zijn eigen octet op. Hij werd lid en co-leider van het Ronnie Scott Quintet, genaamd The Jazz Couriers. Tijdens tournees begin jaren zestig reisde hij door de Verenigde Staten en speelde met artiesten als Clark Terry, Horace Parlan, Roland Kirk, James Moody en Louis Hayes om er een paar te noemen. Terug in London formeerde hij zijn eigen orkest en daarmee was hij regelmatig te zien en te horen op de Engelse radio en TV, zoals op de fragmenten van vandaag voor Jazz 625. Genieten dus met de twee selecties, opgenomen op 5 mei 1964.

OSCAR ALEMAN: Tijdens zijn verblijf in Europa tijdens de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw maakte Oscar Alemán regelmatige deel uit van het Josephine Baker orkest en hij bracht het zelfs tot muzikaal leider van het uit zestien man bestaande orkest, de Baker Boys. Als hij niet met Josephine optrad, speelde hij als freelancer met andere muzikanten, zoals bijvoorbeeld het zangduo Jean, Jac & Jo ( met de Nederlander Henry Driessen), ook een onderdeel van de Josephine Baker revue. Verder speelde hij mee in optredens in en rond Parijs en nam deel aan optredens met anderen. Rond 1935 speelde Oscar Aleman een paar keer gitaar in het orkest van de Amerikaanse entertainer en orkestleider Freddy Taylor.

These Jazz 625 program were lost for some decades and became almost forgotten, until they were rediscovered again in the early 1990s. You can find all famous jazz musicians of the 1960s on these programs, like Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie or Ben Webster, but also some English musicians now almost forgotten. This week I shared with you the programs with Bill Le Sage and Victor Feldman.

This program was recorded in London on the 19th of December 1964 as The Johnny Scott Quintet. If haven't found much info about this sax player, also active on flute, then that he was active for TV and film. This Jazz 625 quintet has an unusual front line with Johnny Scott on flute and gives us a rare opportunity to hear Duncan Lamont on bass sax ( or is it a bass clarinet) in a small group setting with Arthur Watts, Barry Morgan on drums and instead of piano, David Snell on harp! - a really intersting combination. JAZZ 625: In de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw had de BBC een populair programma met live jazz, getiteld Jazz 625. Jarenlang waren de banden van deze opnamen kwijt en vergeten totdat ze begin jaren negentig weer boven water kwamen. Ze bevatten opnamen met de grote jazznamen van die tijd, zoals Ben Webster, Oscar Peterson en Dizzy Gillespie, maar ook opnamen met Engelse musici, die veel minder bekend zijn. Deze week wil ik wat minder bekende opnamen laten zien. Voorafgaand aan deze bijdrage liet ik het orkest van Duke Ellington zien, de opnamen met Bill Le Sage en Victor Feldman.

Vandaag ........ het Johnny Scott Quintet met het nummer Othello.

Dit programma werd opgenomen op 19 december 1964 in London.

Ik heb niet veel informatie over deze saxofoon- en fluitspeler kunnen vinden, behalve dan dat hij actief was voor de TV en de film. Dit Jazz 625 Quintet in ieder geval heeft een vrij ongebruikelijke frontbezetting met Johnny Scott op fluit en Duncan Lamont op bassax (of is het een basklarinet?), Arthur Watts op bas, Barry Morgan slagwerk en in plaats van een piano, David Snell op harp. JAZZ 625: In the 1960s the BBC had a very popular series of live jazz programs titled Jazz 625. For many years jazz fans in Britain thought that these programs were lost, until it was rediscovered again in the archives of the BBC. Most Jazz 625 programs are well preserved in the archives of the BBC - many of the later BBC Jazz programs, produces by Terry Henebery, like Jazz Goes To College (1966), Jazz at the Maltings (1968) and Jazz Scene ( 1969) are not so well preserved and most are lost. In the 1960s the BBC had a very popular series of live jazz programs titled Jazz 625. The producer was Terry Henebery, who started this series in 1963 with a test program featuring Alex Welsh. That program was recorded in November 1963, but it would last until April 1964 before the real first Jazz 625 program was sceduled, a program titled Duke Ellington In Concert, hosted by Steve Race.

Today a less known British musician who performed for Jazz 625 in June 1965, hosted by Humphrey Lyttelton, Victor Feldman.

Victor Feldman was born in April 1934 in Edgware, Middlesex (GB) and passed away in Los Angeles May 1987. He was already active on stage, discovered at the age of seven. His father had founded the Feldman Swing Club in London in 1942, where Victor Feldman performed. He started as a drummer in the family band the Feldman Trio with Robert Feldman on the clarinet and Monty on the accordion. In 1944 he played in the Glenn Miller AAAF band, billed as Kid Krupa, refering to Gene Krupa of course. He changed to vibraphone in the late 1940s and played this instrument in bands like Roy Fox's and the Ralph Dharon Sextet. After a short period in India he made some great recordings with Ronnie Scott's Orchestra, before he moved to the USA. There he worked with the Woody Herman Herd and the Buddy DeFranco band. Victor played and recorded with numerous US jazz men and his work at the piano in the Hollywood recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet are worth mentioning. The title tune Seven Steps To Heaven is his composition.
This program for Jazz 625, featuring Ronnie Scott was recorded in London on the 2nd of June 1965.

JAZZ 625: In de jaren zestig had de BBC met Jazz 625 een bijzonder populair live jazzprogramma op de Engelse televisie. De opnamen, die eerst verloren gewaand waren, zijn jaren geleden weer opgedoken vanuit de BBC archieven. De meeste Jazz 625 programma's zijn goed bewaard gebleven in de archieven van de BBC - veel van de latere BBC jazzprogramma's, eveneens geproduceerd door Terry Henebery, zoals Jazz Goes To College (1966), Jazz at the Maltings (1968) en Jazz Scene ( 1969) zijn minder goed bewaard en zelfs verdwenen; wat dat betreft is het in Nederland en België niet veel beter. Jazzprogramma's werden door desinteresse niet bewaard of de Ampexbanden werden voor hergebruik overgespeeld. Humphtrey Lyttelton, die de latere uitzendingen presenteerde.

In de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw zond de BBC het programma Jazz 625 uit, een erg populaire serie met live jazz. TIP: Kennen jullie Esther Groenenberg nog? Zij trad vorig jaar op bij Paul de Leeuw met het lied Zuurkool met Worst en wist daarmee zelfs Paul stil te krijgen. Ze schreef me: Hai allemaal, donderdag 20 maart ben ik tussen 18.00 en 20.00 te gast in het programma DeSmet Live dat wordt uitgezonden op Radio5 (de IKON). Ik ga daar 4 liedjes zingen die ik zelf heb geschreven, allemaal in het Nederlands. De vier liedjes komen verspreid over die twee uur voorbij. Ik word begeleid door Dirk Schreuders, Gertjan v/d Weerd en Rutger Hoorn. Voor mij een heel bijzonder optreden, voor het eerst écht in 't openbaar met eigen werk! HOERA!! Je kan het live via internet luisteren en via de radio: 747 AM. Mocht je het leuk vinden: je kan ook live aanwezig zijn in de DeSmet studio's om mij aan te moedigen. JAZZ 625: In the 1960s the BBC had a very popular series of live jazz programs titled Jazz 625. For many years jazz fans in Britain thought that these programs were lost, until it was rediscovered again in the archives of the BBC. Most Jazz 625 programs are well preserved in the archives of the BBC - many of the later BBC Jazz programs, produces by Terry Henebery, like Jazz Goes To College (1966), Jazz at the Maltings (1968) and Jazz Scene ( 1969) are not so well preserved and most are lost. Today ............. Bill Le Sage's Directions in Jazz Unit with the tune Time Two And A Half.

Bill Le Sage was a British bebop piano player. He was born in January 1927 and passed away in October 2001. In 1945 he had formed his own sextet and after his military service he played in the Johnny Dankworth Seven. He worked on transatlantic ocean liners between England and the USA to be able to follow the developements in new music. In 1950 he even took some piano lessons from the famous piano player Lennie Tristano.
In the 1950s you can find him in the Kenny Baker's Dozen and the Tony Kinsey trio, where he also played the accordion and vibes and made experiments with jazz and poetry. In the years preceding these Jazz 625 recordings Bill played with saxophone player Ronnie Ross and drummer Jack Parnell. He was a sought after accompanist for Americans in Europe like the great guitar player Tal Farlow. In 1964 he formed his ten-piece orchestra Directions in Jazz,the band to be heard in this Jazz 625 program.
This program was recorded on the 16th of June 1964.

De meeste Jazz 625 programma's zijn goed bewaard gebleven in de archieven van de BBC - veel van de latere BBC jazzprogramma's, eveneens geproduceerd door Terry Henebery, zoals Jazz Goes To College (1966), Jazz at the Maltings (1968) en Jazz Scene ( 1969) zijn minder goed bewaard en zelfs verdwenen; wat dat betreft is het in Nederland en België niet veel beter. Bill Le Sage was een Engelse bebop pianist. Hij werd geboren in januari 1927 en overleed oktober 2001. In 1945 had hij een eigen sextet en toen hij uit militaire dienst kwam ging hij spelen in de Johnny Dankworth Seven. Hij werkte op de transatlantische passagierschepen tussen Engeland en de Verenigde Staten en daardoor kon hij de ontwikelling van de "nieuwe" muziek op de voet volgen. In 1950 heeft hij zelfs privélessen van Lennie Tristano gehad.

In de jaren vijftig zien we hem terug in de Kenny Baker Dozen en het Tony Kinsey Trio, waar hij ook wel de accordeon en vibrafoon speelde en experimenteerde met jazz en poezie. In de jaren voorafgaand aan deze Jazz 625 opnamen speelde Bill met saxofonist Ronnie Ross en slagwerker Jack Parnell. Hij was een veel gevraagd begeleider voor Amerikanen die in Europa op tournee kwamen, zoals de Amerikaanse gitaarvirtuoos Tal Farlow. In 1964 vormde hij een tienmans orkest genaamd Directions in Jazz; de band die je in deze uitzending van Jazz 625 hebt zien optreden. Het programma, overigens, dateerde uit 16 juni 1964.
TIP: Extra concert van het John Marshall - Ferdinand Povel Quintet op 26 april 2008 in De Werf in Brugge. Deze groep speelde een paar weken geleden, in nagenoeg dezelfde bezetting, in de Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen en ik was zwaar onder de indruk. Als je het concert toen gemist hebt, kun je nu in de herhaling.

Jazz 625 - Duke Ellington in Concert

JAZZ 625: Live Jazz is rare on television nowadays, even on radio ....... If you love to hear jazz on TV or radio, you must be at least unemployed or a night owl. In our part of the world, the French music channel, Mezzo, is the only TV station that brings daily live jazz programs, and now-and-then Dutch televison scedules, at the introduction to a jazz festival like North Sea, old fragments from the so-called Jazzkelders ( = Jazz Cellars) of the NPS, the Dutch Tv jazz archives.

In the past live jazz was hosted by Pim Jacobs, Cees Schrama or Han Reiziger each Sunday morning. Nowadays this kind of programs on public TV are rare; the only exception is VPRO TV.
In the 1960s the BBC had a very popular series of live jazz programs titled Jazz 625. The producer was Terry Henebery, who started this series in 1963 with a test program featuring Alex Welsh. That program was recorded in November 1963, but it would last until April 1964 before the real first Jazz 625 program was sceduled, a program titled Duke Elington In Concert, hosted by Steve Race.

I love to show you a fragment of that first program, featuring Johnny Hodges who plays the tune Isfahan.

The name Jazz 625 revers to the fact that BBC 2 ( new at that times), broadcast on the 625-line UHF system. The origianl BBC 1 progrmans still used the 405-line VHF system. The signature tune of the show was based on the 6th, 2nd and 5th note on the scale. Listen to the tune, used a the background music in a contemporary compilation of friends pictures.

Most Jazz 625 program are well preserved in the archives of the BBC - many of the later BBC Jazz programs, produces by Terry Henebery, like Jazz Goes To College (1966), Jazz at the Maltings (1968) and Jazz Scene ( 1969) are not so well preserved and most are even lost; like in Belgium and The Netherlands ........

JAZZ 625: Live Jazz is tegenwoordig zeldzaam op de televisie, zelfs op de radio .... en als er een keer wat uitgezonden wordt, moet je van nature werkloos of een nachtbraker zijn. In het zuidwesten van Nederland hebben we eigenlijk alleen de Franse muziekzender Mezzo op de kabel die regelmatig, elke dag, wel iets van jazz laat zien. En af en toe, meestal als opmaat naar het Northsea jazzfestival zendt ook de NPS oude fragmenten uit in programma´s als bijvoorbeeld Jazzkelders, opnamen uit de jazzarchieven. Vroeger was het misschien iets beter gesteld met live jazz op de radio en tv. Zo had je de programma´s van Pim Jacobs, Cees Schrama of Han Reiziger elke zondagmorgen: tegenwoordig kun je soms op de zondagmorgen alleen bij de VPRO terecht. In de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw zond de BBC het programma Jazz 625 uit, een erg populaire serie met live jazz. Ik heb een fragment gevonden van deze eerste uitzending, waarin Duke Ellington zijn stersolist Johnny Hodges aankondigt in het nummer Isfahan.

Genieten dus ......

De uit Middelburg afkomstige saxofonist Jasper van Damme heeft de Erasmus Jazz Prijs 2008 gewonnen. Vanaf deze plaats is dat natuurlijk een felicitatie waard. !!
