Tony Scott
Today's treasure was found by accident, in a bunch of records I bought. I wouldn't have bought it if I had found it on its is own in a record shop, due to the fact that I don't like clarinet playing. Sorry, but I don't like the clarinet as an instrument as it reminds me to much to dixieland and swing music. This CD learned me not to judge to quickly - Tony Scott is a versatile clarinet player and singer that can play in all kinds of jazz styles.
This album was released by Giants of Jazz, normally an Italian record label with cheap productions sold at the Vroom & Dreesman shops, filled with compilations of antique recordings by artists or long forgotten concerts; this album was produced by Walter Gürtler and Vanni Moretto. Mario Rusca and his Trio ( with Tony Scott as special guest) made this album in Milan ( Italy) June 1996. The Mario Rusca Trio features Mario Rusca at the piano, Rosario Bonacorso on bass and Tony Arco on drums. This album was titled Tony Scott on his 75 Birthday - The Old Lion Roars ( Giants of Jazz CD 53301 )
You should expect that musicians aged 75 years old, play the music they played their whole life, but not Tony Scott. You could label him as a loner, an einzelgänger, a musical adventurer. In his long and fascinating career he was always inspired by foreign ( etnic music) or experimental jazz styles ( free jazz). In his biography his musical career starts in the 1940s when he started to play in the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Claude Thornhill and Ray Ventura; he played the bebop style and played for sometimes with Billie Holiday. I'm not going to list all musical adventures of Scott, but worth to mention are his trips to the Far East, where he learned about Zen Meditation and etnic music. In the 1960s he moved to Europe and lived and performed in Italy for most of the time. His clarinet playing is well worth listen to and on this record he also sings, like the scat song Scott Scat, a great surprise. The Giants of Jazz album labels him as a free, anti-conformist person, a Citizen Of The World. When you see pictures of him, with his profetic white beard, his eccentric clothing, he looks like an old hippie, but his music is fresh, modern and it swings.

De CD van vandaag vond ik bij toeval in een stapel platen die ik van iemand kocht - eerlijk gezegd had ik hem niet gekocht als het exemplaar in een platenzaak door mijn handen was gegaan - doodeenvoudig, omdat ik geen liefhebber ben van klarinet. De klarinet doet me vaak teveel denken aan dixielandbands of aan grote swingorkesten. Deze CD leerde me niet te snel klaar te staan met oordelen - Tony Scott is een uitzondering; deze ervaren klarinetist en zanger speelt en zingt met het grootste gemak in alle jazzstijlen. Dit album is uitgebracht op het Giants of Jazz label, dat normaal goedkope jazzcd's maakt, die verkocht worden bij Vroom en Dreesman, met historische opnamen van jazzartiesten of van lang vergeten concerten; dit album werd opgenomen door Walter Gürtler en Vanni Moretto. Je zou hem kunnen beschrijven als een eenling, een einzelgänger, een muzikale zwerver en avonturist. Tijdens zijn lange en fascinerende carriere heeft hij zich laten inspireren door allerlei muzikale stromingen van volksmuziek tot free jazz. Zijn muzikale loopbaan begon in de jaren veertig bij de grote orkesten van Tommy Dorsey, Claude Thornhill en Ray Ventura; hij speelde in de bebop stijl en was lange tijd begeleider van Billie Holiday. Ik ga hier niet al zijn muzikale uitstapjes en avonturen uit de doeken doen - daarvoor is zijn carriere te veel omvattend. wel is het goed te weten dat hij in de jaren zestig in het Verre Oosten verbleef, waar hij de Zen Meditatie bestudeerde en de oosterse muziekstijlen. Hij verhuisde eind jaren zestig naar Europa en verbleef voornamelijk in Italië. Zijn klarinetspel is gevarieerd en daardoor is het geen straf om er naar te luisteren - ook zingt hij en het nummer Scott Scat is een verrassing op deze plaat. De Giants of Jazz plaat schildert hem als een ongebonden, anti-conformist, een Man-Van-De-Wereld. De foto's van hem laten een overjarige hippie zien met een haast bijbelse uitstraling met een grote witte baard en excentrieke kleding; zijn klarinetspel is echter gewoon jazz - modern en het swingt. Wat wil je nog meer !
