Sonny Stitt: Een Ondergewaardeerd Talent

SONNY STITT AT THE D.J. LOUNGE Deze keer een LP uit 1960 met een registratie van het John Board Organ Trio met als speciale gast Sonny Stitt ( die op de hoes alle credits krijgt) van een optreden in de D.J. Lounge in Chicago. De plaat heet dan ook simpelweg Sonny Stitt at the D.J. lounge. De plaat werd uitgebracht op het Argo label ( Argo LPS 683). De voorkant is bijzonder - een fraai, opvallend geschilderd portret van Sonny Stitt door Robert Trendler Jr.
Sonny Stitt, werd geboren in Boston in februari 1924 en overleed in juli 1982 in Washington. Hij begon zijn muzikale loopbaan begin jaren veertig in de big band van Tiny Bradshaw en werd later lid van het Billy Eckstine orkest, de broedkamer voor zoveel talentvolle bebopmuzikanten zoals Fats Navarro, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey en Gene Ammons. Midden jaren veertig stroomde hij door naar het Dizzy Gillespie Sextet.

 Vanaf de jaren vijftig leidt hij eigen kleine bezettingen en speelde in 1960 zelfs korte tijd bij Miles Davis, waar hij John Coltrane verving. In 1971 is hij één van de Giants of Jazz - de ultime all-star band, die een wereldtournee van twee maanden maakten. Deze plaat is een registratie van een optreden begin juni 1961 en bevat het John Board Organ Trio, met John Board op tenorsax, Edward Buster aan het orgel en Joe Shelton op slagwerk. Op deze plaat is Sonny Stitt als gastspeler in de club aanwezig. De leider van dit Organ Trio was John Board, tenorsaxofonist, die thuis hoort in het rijtje van Gene Ammons en de onlangs overleden Johnny Griffin. John Board, nu helemaal vergeten, was de leider van dit reguliere club trio uit de Disc Jockey Lounge in Chicago.

The Disc Jockey Lounge lag op de hoek van de East 63rd Street en South Cottage Grove Av. in Chicago en werd geleid door McKie Fitzhugh, die ook danspromotor was. Deze club kreeg vooral naam als plaats waar hele veldslagen werden uitgevochten tussen muzikanten ( uiteraard op hun instrumenten, niet met waterpistooltjes) en lange jamsessies gehouden werden. De club was in ieder geval actief gedurende de jaren vijftig en de eerste jaren van de volgende decade.
Deze plaat is één van de vele, die Sonny Stitt onder eigen naam opnam. Hij heeft met eigen groepen meer dan honderd LPs gemaakt op labels als Prestige en Roost tijdens zijn meer dan veertig jaar durende carriere. Er staan zes titels op, waarvan de helft eigen composities, zoals het "groovy" Free Chicken, met een schitterende solo van John Board en een nummer, genoemd naar de eigenaar van de zaak: McKie. Deze plaat is zeker niet zijn beste, maar ik luister er graag naar vanwege de prachtige duels tussen beide saxofonisten en de "vette" klank van het orgel van Edward Buster. Mijn exemplaar van de plaat is de mono-versie en die versie is, door serieuze verzamelaars, meer gezocht dan de stereo plaat. Gek toch eigenlijk? Zou het originele John Board Organ Trio ( met Sonny Stitt ) in de club ook mono te horen zijn geweest?
Aanplakbiljet van één van die sax-battles in de D.J. Lounge tussen Little Wash en Tom Garcia.
Ik vond een fragment, ongeveer uit deze zelfde periode met Sonny Stitt, J.J. Johnson en Howard McGhee, samen in het nummer Now's The Time.

The promising Dutch alto saxophone player Tineke Postma celebrates her 30th birthday today. She was born in Heerenveen, a small city in the northern part of The Netherlands and studied the Amsterdam Conservatory. After that, she visited the Manhattan School of Music in New York with David Liebman and Chris Potter. Last week she played with the Terri Lyne Carrington Group, featuring Geri Allen and Esperanza Spalding) at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat, Israel ! Her latest album is called A Journey That Matters was released this summer, in Europe, the US and in Japan. Gefeliciteerd, Tineke met je dertigste verjaardag !!

 Today another great album from the 1960s, played by Sonny Stitt and the John Board Organ Trio ( only Sonny Stitt is credited on the label and cover - he's the star !!) live at the D.J. Lounge in Chicago. This album, simply titled as Sonny Stitt at the D.J. lounge, was released by on the Argo label ( Argo LPS 683). It has a great cover by Robert Trendler Jr.

Sonny Stitt, was born in Boston February 1924 and passed away July 1982 in Washington. He started his career in the early 1940s in the big band of Tiny Bradshaw and became later a member of the Billy Eckstine Band, the breeding room for young bebop players like Fats Navarro, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey and Gene Ammons. In the mid 1940s he is to be found as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Sextet. From the 1950s onwards he has his own small groups and in 1960 he even plays for some times in the Miles Davis Quintet, replacing no one but John Coltrane. In the 1970s he is one of the members of the Giants of Jazz - the ultimate all-star band that toured for two months across te world. This album is a registration of a live recording early June 1961 and contains the John Board Organ Trio, featuring John Board on tenor saxophone, Edward Buster at the organ and Joe Shelton on drums. On this recording Sonny Stitt plays his alto and tenor saxophone as a guest in the club. John Board is one of those Chicago saxophone players that has been complete forgotten now, but belongs to the big-toned tenor saxophone players like Gene Ammons and Johnny Griffin', who passed away last month. John Board was the house band leader, who played in the club with his Organ trio.

The Disc Jokey Lounge was situated at the East 63rd Street and South Cottage Grove Av. in Chicago and was directed by McKee Fitzhugh, who was a dance promotor. It is said that the club became famous during the 1950s because of his battles between jazz men during lenghty jam sessions. The club stayed active at least until the early 1960s.

This record is one of the numerous LPs ( Sonny Stitt made more then 100 albums under his own name for labels like Prestige and Roost) Sonny Stitt released during his 40 years in jazz. It contains six tunes, half own compositions like the groovy Free Chicken with a great solo by John Board and a tune dedicated to the owner of the club: McKie. This album is not his best, but I like it because of the great saxophone duels between Stitt and Board and the groovy sound of Edward Buster's organ. My copy of the LP is the Mono version and as you might know real collectors prefer the mono versions ..... Isn't that strange? Did the original John Board Organ Trio ( featuring Sonny Stitt) played mono on stage?

JAZZ HOEILAART 2008

Van 24 tot en met 27 september 2008 vindt weer het jaarlijkse Jazz Hoeilaart Festival plaats. Op dit gerenomeerde festival dat vlakbij Brussel gehouden wordt in Jezus-Eik is ook nu weer van alles te genieten. Het festival wordt dit jaar gehouden voor de 30ste keer. Dit jaar overleed haar oprichter Albert Michiels. Het festival wordt geopend door niemand minder dan Toots Thielemans, still going strong, die al meer dan zestig jaar op de planken staat. Vier weken voordat dit festival van start gaat is dit openingsconcert helaas al helemaal uitverkocht.

Het Jazz Hoeilaar 2008 staat traditioneel in het teken van de Jazz Hoeilaart prijs, die jaarlijks wordt toegekend aan jong aanstormend talent. De twee finalisten zullen optreden tijdens dit festival. Andere optredens zijn van Tutu Puona, een van oorsprong Zuidafrikaanse zangeres, die momenteel in onze streken woont en optreedt. Ze treedt regelmatig op o.a. met het Brussels Jazz Orkest. Ze timmert de laatste tijd flink aan de weg. Verder een optreden van Lay Linn & her Magnificent Seven en als afsluiter de 65-jarige gitarist Philip Catherine, die zijn soloprogramma laat horen. Al met al weer genoeg redenen om volgende maand richting Brussel te trekken ....... Jazz Hoeilaart 2008.

SONNY STITT: EEN ONDERGEWAARDEERD TALENT

De altsaxofonist Sonny Stitt is één van die bebopmuzikant die naast Charlie Parker onderbelicht gebleven zijn. Hij kon schitterend soleren op zowel alt- als tenorsax, eerst nog sterk onder invloed van Bird, maar al snel in een geheel eigen stijl. The Giants of Jazz: heavenly music

The album I played last week, titled The Bop Fathers is one of those jazz records that should be in every collection. It has been recorded at one of the numerous concerts by the succesfull formation, labelled as The Giants of Jazz, which made a lenghty tour all around the world, from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Israel to Europe, finishing in London on the 14th of november 1971.

The idea for such a tour was made by George Wein, producer and organisator of jazz concerts ( he started the Newport Jazz Festival.) He wanted to organize a series of concerts with the last surviving great names in bebop for a world tour that lasted two months. He invited Dizzy Gillespie to play the trumpet ( who else?) Sonny Stitt on the saxophone, Kai Winding on the trombone, Al McKibbon on bass, Art Blakey on drums and Thelonious Monk on piano.

A perelous undertaking; not only because these "Giants of Jazz" were all skilled band leaders and jazz musicians, who were used to rule the roost - what would happen when they had to play all six together in one band - for forty-two ( 42 !!) concerts? And what about the weak health of musicians like Thelonious Monk? To make a long story short - there were no major problems.

It was exciting to see how those six individuals were rehearsing each other's tunes. Dizzy learning Monk's music - Monk listening to the Parker and Gillespie tunes that the group played. Listening, listening, Alyn Shipton writes in his book Groovin' High about Dizzy's life. There was no leader, although Dizzy would do the speaking. Dizzy wouldn't introduce the musicians individual when on stage, so there would be no order of appearance. I do have the CD mentioned above, titled The Bop Fathers which is a registration of the Milan, Italy concert from the 20th of October 1971. Another album is titled The Giants of Jazz and is from the Belgrade concert, the 2nd of November 1971.

The fragment I found is from one of the European concerts in 1971. Can someone inform me where and when this was recorded? If you search on internet you can find a fragment of the Rotterdam concert, but the sound and film have a poor quality.

No problems with Thelonious Monk during this two-month tour - he even made some great recordings after the tour, on the 15th of November 1971 - while in London, which were released by Black Lion in a series of CDs titled Thelonious Monk - The London Collection.


JAZZLAB SERIES ALLSTARS BAND:
De JazzLab concerten zijn al vijftien jaar lang een begrip in België. Vijftien jaar lang werden er concerten georganiseerd voor onbekende startende, maar ook reeds gesettelde meer ervaren Belgische jazzmusici. Dit jaar wordt haar vijftiende verjaardag gevierd met o.a. een serie concerten door de Jazzlab Series Allstars Band. In deze band vinden we Bart Defoort op tenorsax, Frank Vaganée op alt, Nathalie Loriers op piano, Peter Hertman op gitaar, Nicolaas Thys op bas en Felix Simtaine op slagwerk. Volgend weekend zijn ze voor het eerst te horen tijdens Jazz in't Park in Gent en daarna nog op acht podia door heel Vlaanderen. Zie hun website voor meer informatie.

GIANTS OF JAZZ: HEMELSE MUZIEK:

Een all-star band is vaak niet meer dan een door toeval bijeengebracht groepje musici. Toch droomt iedere Jazzliefhebber er wel eens van om zijn ideale all-star band bij elkaar te brengen - soms een onmogelijkheid als uitverkoren musici allang overleden zijn. George Wein kreeg die kans wel - in 1971 bracht hij zes musici bij elkaar die stuk voor stuk hun sporen in de bebop hadden verdient en nu, in 2008, vast allen een plaatsje hebben verworven in het Heaven All-Star Jazz Ochestra hierboven.
