Gene Ammons

Gene Ammons: when I had this album my hands, last night, I thought about my last blog about boogie-woogie piano players, like Albert Ammons. Well, not so strange, as I learned that Gene was Albert's son.
His name, Gene Ammons had been in a lot of 1950s line-ups, as I remember, but I had never hear him really play. I found this Prestige CD with 13 tracks titled: Gene Ammons - A Stranger in Town. ( Prestige 00025218526623 )
The CD is in fact a compilation of tunes made through his entire career. Gene started to play in the Billy Eckstine Band mid 1940s at the age of 19 and later moved to Chicago where he worked with his father. He was part of Woody Herman's band and co-led a septet with Sonny Stitt in 1952. During this early 1950s he was a sought after tenor player for all kinds of groups, but, like so many jazz musicians in those days, drugs kept him busy. It brought him in jail for drug offences between 1958 and 1960 and later from 1964 up to 1969. In 1973 he was in Europe but once, at the Montreux festival and died in 1974 due to pneumonia.
His tone is very direct and strong and remind me to Dexter Gordon and has elements of Lester Young and Ben Webster. His ballads are great and, as you can learn from the short biography above, he lived too short to become famous outside the US. The way he plays the tenor is labeled as the Chicago School and musicians like Johnny Griffin' and Clifford Jordan are influenced by his style of playing.
The CD contains music from three albums: Velvet Soul ( 1961 ) - Sock ( 1962) and Night Lights 1970 ) and in all kinds of different line-ups ( from quartets up to a complete big band ). I was surprised by the opening track The Song Is You, composed by Jerome Kern, played by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, where the saxes seem to battle out a fight. A great tune !! Also the tunes in smaller line-ups, like Stranger In Town with Mal Waldron, Wendell Marshall and Ed Thigpen are great !!

Gene Ammons: toen ik deze CD gisteren in mijn handen nam dacht ik meteen aan de blog van gisteren over boogie-woogie pianisten als Albert Ammons. Nog niet zo gek, want Gene Ammons was de zoon van Albert Ammons.
Gene is terug te vinden in allerlei bezettingen uit de jaren vijftig, maar ik had eigenlijk nog nooit goed naar hem geluisterd; dat kon ik gisteren goed maken met de Prestige CD: Gene Ammons - A Stranger in Town. ( Prestige 00025218526623 ) Deze CD is eigenlijk een verzameling van nummers uit zijn hele loopbaan. Hij begon midden jaren veertig als jonge tenorsaxofonist bij Billy Eckstine en speelde bij zijn vader in Chicago. Hij maakte onderdeel uit van de Woody Herman band en leidde samen met Sonny Stitt hun septet. Hij werd een graag geziene tenorist in allerlei bezettingen, maar, zoals dat vaak ging in die dagen, hij kon niet van de drugs afblijven. Hij belandde hierdoor twee keer voor langere tijd in de gevangenis ( 1958 - 1960 ) ( 1964 - 1969 ). In 1973 speelde hij in Europa tijdens het Montreux jazz festival ( zijn enige trip buiten Amerika) en overleed in 1974 aan longontsteking. Zijn tenorspel lijkt veel op dat van Dexter Gordon - die directe luide toon en zit ergens tussen Lester Young en Ben Webster in. Vooral in zijn langzame nummers lijkt hij erg op Ben Webster. Hoewel hij zo goed als onbekend bleef buiten Amerika wordt hij toch gerekend als één van de oprichters van de Chicago School en musici als Johnny Griffin' en Clifford Jordan zijn door zijn spel sterk beinvloed.
De CD bevat muziek uit drie wat onbekendere Prestige albums: Velvet Soul ( 1961 ) - Sock ( 1962) en Night Lights 1970 ) en in allerlei bezettingen ( van kwartet tot aan een complete big band ). Ik werd aangenaam verrast met het openingsstuk The Song Is You, geschreven door Jerome Kern, gespeeld door het Oliver Nelson Orchestra. Het lijkt alsof de saxen een soort onderlinge strijd uitvechten op het podium. Schitterend !! Maar ook het werk met kleinere groepen, zoals met Mal Waldron - Wendell Marshall - Ed Thigpen, klinkt geweldig ( Stanger In Town) Ik moet nog maar eens goed rondkijken of er meer van deze ondergewaardeerde Vreemdeling in de Stad te vinden is.
