What Is This Thing Called Love en Cherokee werden beide in de Manhattan Tower studios in New York City opgenomen op 25 augustus 1957.

Heerlijke vette hammondklanken.

LUCKY THOMPSON live IN BELGIË

NEAL HEFTI ( 1922-2008)

A few days ago the composer, arranger Neal Hefti passed away. He started his carreer as a trumpet player, but soon he sold his arrangements and compositions to bands, like Nat Towles early 1930s.

In the 1940s he wrote music for Charlie Barnet, Harry James and Woody Herman Orchestras and for the short lived Charlie Ventura Big Band. In the 1950s he became a fulltime composer and arranger for film and tv and one of his most famous creations is, of course, the Batman theme.

In the 1950s he composed and arranged for the Count Basie band and one of his most impressive arrangements is Whirlybird and Li'l Darlin' which made him famous. I found a film fragment of a concert by the Count Basie band, featuring Sonny Cohn on trumpet and Freddie Green at the gbuitar, playing the tune Li'l Darlin' ( London - 1965). Count Basie is of course the piano player in the intro.

Neal Hefti was 85 years old and passed away in his house in Toluca Lake on Saturday 11th of October 2008.

DANNY ALTIER and his ORCHESTRA:
Muggsy Spanier cornet - Johnny Carsella trombone - Maurice Bercov clarinet - Danny Altier alto saxophone and leader - Phil Robinson tenor saxophone - Jess Stacy piano - Ray Biondi guitar - Pat Pattison tuba - George Wettling drums. Frank Sylvano vocals on the first tune.

I'm Sorry, Sally - C-2466
My Gal Sal - C-2467

Recorded in Chicago on the 22nd of October, 1928 for Vocalion.

This is the complete recorded collection by Danny Altier and his Orchestra: two tunes - one record. His orchestra, which was first known as the Midway Gardens band, played at the Triangle Café in Chicago. It was recorded 80 years ago by a pick-up band with musicians from other Chicagoan bands, like Muggsy Spanier, who did good work here on cornet; he was a regular player of the Ray Miller Orchestra.
The tune was reissued on The Chicago Hot Bands (1924-1928) by Timeless Historical ( CBC-1-041)

CONFIRMATION - JIMMY SMITH
The Blue Note CD album Confirmation by Jimmy Smith and his sextet is one of those little 1950s treasures in my collection I love to put into the spotlights today. The album contains three lenghty tunes recorded in 1957 and 1958, but the album itself was released in 1979.
The three tunes on the album were recorded at two sessions. What Is This Thing Called Love and Cherokee were both recorded at the Manhattan Tower studios in New York City on the 25th of August 1957. Present were: Lee Morgan - Curtis Fuller and George Coleman. Jimmy Smith on organ of course and Kenny Burrell and Donald Bailey in the rhythm section. Other tunes reorded on this one are release on the House Party and The Sermon album. The front line, Lee Morgan with some members of the front line; Curtis Fuller and George Coleman also recorded during that same date and place the Lee Morgan Blue Note album City Lights.
The second tune and title track is from the February 1958 session and titled Confirmation. Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson and Tina Brooks in the fron lines, Jimmy Smith on organ and Kenny Burrell and Art Blakey in the rhythm section. This tunes seems to be also a left over from the House Party and The Sermon albums. It puzzles me why these three tracks were rejected for twenty years as all three tunes, are excellent performances - no doubt ...... It is a fact that Jimmy Smith recorded a lot of stuff during these days and such lenghly tunes were maybe not suitable for a release; fact is that, when Blue Note released these three tunes Jimmy Smith was already a Verve artist for years.

I like the fact that the playing time is rather extended: from 10:31 minutes for Confirmation up to more then 20 minutes for Cherokee. This extensive playing time gives the possibility for lenghtly solos without the limit of the regular 3-minutes record.
Jimmy Smith - Confirmation. As far as I know this album was released on CD on a Japanese pressing; the album with the lady on the cover. Try to find a copy.

SPIKE HUGHES (1908-1987).
Some days ago we commemorated the English band leader Spike Hughes who was born 100 years ago. I received a message from John W. who wrote: Nice interesting Newsletter, as usual. The piece to remind us all of the 100 years anniversary of SPIKE HUGHES is valuable - not many people still remember the great work this man did for our music. I remember as a small boy, back in the 1930s, that Spike had a radio programme on the BBC on which he played the very first jazz records I had ever heard. He had a soft voice, and a very pleasant style. The programme was always introduced and finished with his orchestra's recording of "Sirocco" (Decca F2844) - which I still enjoy playing from time to time! But his "Negro Orchestra" was the hottest! NEAL HEFTI ( 1922 - 2008 ) OVERLEDEN

Jimmy Smith

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
On the 25th and 26th of February 1958, Jimmy Smith recorded serveral sides for Blue Note at the Manhattan Towers studios in New York City. These 50 years old recordings are great to remember.
The recordings, made on the first day, are with an all star band, featuring Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks (these recordings were his tribute on Blue Note ) and a steady rhythm section featuring Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on two tracks on drums. No bass, as Jimmy Smith of course, was responsibile for the base with his Hammond. Art Blakey plays the percussion on the other four tracks. The recordings made on the 25th of February, 1958 were released on different albums, like Lover Man and Au Privave were released on Jimmy Smith - House Party. (On the Rudy Van Gelder Edition Confirmation has been added). The other tracks, The Sermon and Flamingo were released on Jimmy Smith album The Sermon.
The album The Sermon, which has a tune, titled J.O.S., recorded half a year earlier, contains three lenghtly tunes, rare for Blue Note records. The title tune The Sermon is more then 20 minutes and it filled an entire side of the record. Normally Alfred Lion didn't allow such an extended jam. It is straight-ahead music, with a lot of great solos by Lee Morgan, Tina Brooks and Lou Donaldson, but it seems as if the musicians, like Lee Morgan run out of inspiration at the end of the lenghtly marathon session.
The next day Jimmy Smith recorded six tracks, released on the album Softly As A Summer Breeze with his trio, featuring Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums. Mind that these recordings were released originally in 1965 for the first time, when Jimmy Smith already changed from Blue Note to Verve. On some tracks the rhythm section was replaces for Kenny Burrell on guitar and Philly Joe Jones on drums. It is remarkable that there were so many different rhythm sections used on these two Jimmy Smith recording dates. I count three different rhythm sections in two days. One of the tunes, One For Philly Joe is to be found on the Dutch compilation LP, Portrait of Jimmy Smith ( Blue Note 5C056.92655) and was renamed as Home Cookin'.
For me, both the 50 years old lenghtly track, The Sermon and its half year elder tune J.O.S. are great examples of Jimmy Smith's playing on the organ: 33-minutes of great jazz. Playing these tunes in my car yesterday, very loud, Jimmiy surprised me again - I was scared to death by some unexpected high blue notes played by Jimmy on the organ: You're warned !!

FATS was an easy one: a lot of people could give me the right answers: FATS NAVARRO (1923-1950) and FATS WALLER ( 1904-1923) and also FATS DOMINO (1928) was mentioned, although he's not a jazz musician. It is not so difficult to understand why Fats Waller and Fats Domino were nicknamed FATS, but FATS Navarro wasn't so plump at all. His FATS was derived from FAT GIRL, because he had a high-pitched voice. Today I introduced you to some music of JIMMY SMITH: One of his tunes is titled: J.O.S.
Where does this abbrevation stands for? Send your suggestions to: keepswinging@live.nl

Snowy morning blues

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

AT RANDOM:
BODY AND SOUL - DEXTER GORDON Quartet: Dexter Gordon tenorsax, Tommy Flanagan piano, Larry Ridley bas, Alan Dawson slagwerk.

Jimmy Smith

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Some weeks ago I found a copy of the Jimmy Smith Verve LP Any Number Can Win. A great recording with a great cover - six women out of different cultures are on the front. The liner notes on the cover reads, as written by Al Clarke from Radio Wook: Two of the lovely young ladies are Bunnies from the New York Playboy Club: Liz Yee, second from the left, and Sandy Lawrence, third from the left. Rather useless information, because now I wonder: What are the names of the other four? ......... Did Al Clarke knew these ladies personally? or should I read it as an attempt to fill the lines? To Try and tell you of the music here would be more than I am capable of doing, because it is all the finest jazz one could listen to. Well it's up to you !

It is one of Jimmy Smith first releases for Verve, after a long period under contract by Blue Note. The title Any Number Can Win refers to a French film of that name, released in the early 1960s with Jean Gabin and Alain Delon in the cast. The title song was recorded by Jimmy Smith and became a minor hit. You can find it as the last track on the A-side. To be honest - it's not one of my favorites. It sounds like a rhythm and blues soul pop tune, as if it wants to prove once more that real jazz never can become a hit or a hit can't be
jazz that hits you !. I'm glad there is more on this LP that can interest me, like What I'd Say and The Sermon, both played in a smaller group, a quartet featuring Jimmy Smith at the organ. Kenny Burrell on guitar, George Duvivier on the bass and Mel Lewis on drums.
Maybe it isn't so strange that the tunes I like most are with a small group; most of the ( Blue Note ) recordings I have with Jimmy Smith are with his trio. It seems as if Jimmy Smith, after his transition from Blue Note to Verve, takes the opportunity to make records with a big band. His first album voor Verve Bashin' was with a larger orchestra; so were The Cat, Got My Mojo Working and some later albums.
I also like some of the big band tunes; some are really swinging and great to have, like the ones arranged by Billy Byers: Blues For C.A. ( = Clarence Avant, Jimmy Smith's manager), The Ape Women and G'Won Train, but some other tunes arranged by Claus Ogerman, who directs the orchestra, I'd be better off without it. Jimmy Smith could have known that I hate the use of a background choir ........

Rhapsody in Blue Os Ingenuos

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
De hoestekst vertelt, geschreven door Al Clarke van Radio Wook: Two of the lovely young ladies are Bunnies from the New York Playboy Club: Liz Yee, second from the left, and Sandy Lawrence, third from the left. To Try and tell you of the music here would be more than I am capable of doing, because it is all the finest jazz one could listen to.
