Wild Cat

This weekend seemed to be dedicated to some great CDs I recently received, dedicated to two great jazz musicians Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti. I listened to the excellent CD-box Eddie Lang & Joe Venuti - The New York Sessions 1926 - 1935 remastered.

Most of the tunes presented belong to the 1920s and 1930s standards in jazz and I must have most of them archived on all kinds of CD reissues. This great box contains for the very first time all Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti recordings from those 10 years of intens cooperation together, now well transfered.
One of the tunes, titled Wild Cat is one of my favorites, as it belong to the best that was made in the late 1920s. A beautiful movie sound clip avant-la-lettre of this tune was used in the Paul Whiteman's film The King Of Jazz.

Mind that Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti with these Blue Four sides were pioneers in so-called chamber jazz. Richard Hadlock says: The Venuti-Lang quartet performances represent a pioneer effort to present chamber jazz with a minumum of unmusical effects or superfluous vocals and without any presense of its being anything but music to listening. In my opinion that's the strenghts of this tune - the fact that it is ageless.
The record Wild Cat ( don't mix it up with the tune Wild Cat Blues by Clarence Williams) was recorded in New York City the 21st of June, 1928, for Victor as the Joe Venuti's Blue Four (!) featuring Eddie Lang on guitar, Joe Venuti on the violin and Frank Signorelli piano ( a quartet of three musicians). All three musician came, orginally, from Italy. Joe Venuti was born in Philadelphia, PA on the 16th of September 1903, while Eddie Lang, who's real name sounded too Italian, was Salvatore Massaro, was born in Philadelphia in 1902. Both went to the same school while growing up in Philadelphia. Frank Signorelli was born in New York; his parents were Italian immigrants too. In March 1933 Eddie Lang goes to hospital for a routine tonsillectomy surgeon, but due to some complications Eddie passes away aged only 31 years old. Joe Venuti made still some recordings after Eddie passed away with his Blue Four, with Dick McDonough or Frank Victor in Eddie's place. The four CD-set ends with a duo of Joe Venuti and Russ Morgan from the mid 1930s. Russ Morgan plays the piano on that.

I love to finish this little tribute with a fragment of the Italian guitar player Michele Ariodante and violin player Andy Stein who perform Wild Cat. Andy Stein made several albums with his .... Blue Five and ..... Friends dedicated to Joe Venuti, his inspirator.

Dit weekend stond in het teken van een set schitterende CDs die ik onlangs ontving, gewijd aan de muzikale nalatenschap van Eddie Lang en Joe Venuti. De CD-box waarover ik het heb, is getiteld: Eddie Lang & Joe Venuti - The New York Sessions 1926 - 1935 remastered.

De meeste nummers, die in deze set te vinden zijn komen uit de laatste helft van de jaren twintig en eerste helft van de jaren dertig. De meeste titels heb ik al wel ergens op CDs, maar dankzij deze box staan ze nu allemaal overzichtelijk, mooi gerestaureerd, bij elkaar; een waardevol monument voor tien jaar intensieve samenwerking van het duo Eddie Lang en Joe Venuti.
Eén van de nummers, Wild Cat, behoort tot mijn favorieten en het behoort tot het beste wat eind jaren twintig gemaakt werd. Bovendien is het nummer terug te vinden als een film soundclip avant-la-lettre ( Het zou zo gebruikt kunnen worden door The Box of MTV) in de eerste geluidsfilm ( in kleur !) The King Of Jazz van Paul Whiteman.

Bedenk dat Eddie Lang en Joe Venuti met hun Blue Four opnamen gelden als pioniers in de zgn. chamber jazz, zeg maar kamer-jazz. Richard Hadlock zegt hierover: The Venuti-Lang quartet performances represent a pioneer effort to present chamber jazz with a minumum of unmusical effects or superfluous vocals and without any presense of its being anything but music to listening. ( = De opnamen van het kwartet van Venuti en Lang vormen het pionierswerk in de kamer-jazz met een minimum aan effecten of vaak overbodige zang, zonder ook maar iets dat de luisteraar zou kunnen afleiden van de muziek). En dat is, naar mijn bescheiden mening, dat wat deze muziek zo geweldig maakt - zo tijdloos.
Het nummer Wild Cat, niet te verwarren met de Wild Cat Blues van Clarence Williams, werd opgenomen op 21 juni 1928 voor Victor met de uit drie man bestaande Joe Venuti's Blue Four (!), te weten Eddie Lang op gitaar, Joe Venuti op viool en Frank Signorelli piano. Alle drie kwamen ze oorspronkelijk uit Italië, waar de gitaar en de viool behoren tot de volkscultuur. Joe Venuti werd geboren in 1903 in Philadelphia, op 16 september; Eddie Lang, wiens echte naam te Italiaans klonk ( Salvatore Massaro) werd geboren in Philadelphia in 1902. Beide gingen ze naar dezelfde school in Philadelphia. Frank Signorelli werd geboren in New York; zijjn ouders waren eveneens Italiaanse immigranten. In maart 1933 moet Eddie Lang opgenomen woren voor een onschuldige operatie aan zijn amandelen, maar dat pakt anders uit. Complicaties leiden uiteindelijk tot zijn dood op 31 jarige leeftijd. Joe Venuti gaat nog even door met opnamen maken onder de naam van de Blue Four, waarbij Eddie Lang's rol vervult wordt door Dick Mcdonough of Frank Victor. Deze opnamen staan niet op de CD; wel nog een opnamen van Joe Venuti met Russ Morgan op piano.
Ik vind het leuk om te eindigen met een fragment van de Italiaanse gitarist Michele Ariodante en de violist Andy Stein die het nummer Wild Cat uitvoeren. Andy Stein, geinspireerd door Joe Venuti, maakte verschillende platen ter herinnering aan dit geweldige gitaar-viool duo met zijn ..... Blue Five en ..... Friends.
