Lee Morgan belongs with Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard and Kenny Dorham to the great hard bop trumpet players of the 1950s and 1960s. Lee Morgan, born in Phildadelphia July 1938 passed away, too young, 34 years old, due to a crime of passion. While performing in a New York club he was shot by his female friend who found him with another woman. Four years before this tragic incident Lee Morgan made a record with a sextet, now fourty years ago, featuring himself on the trumpet, Benny Maupin on the tenor saxophone, George Benson at the guitar, John Hicks at the piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. What a great rhythm section !!
These recordings stayed in the Blue Note archives up to 1980 when they were released on LP. Lee Morgan, who started as a professional mid 1950s started with the Dizzy Gillespie orchestra and became a member of the Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. His trumpet playing developed from a style, best characterized by Nat Hentofff as machine-gunning quantities of notes for the pleasure of virtuosity only, to a more personal style thanks to the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers period. His best record was The Sidewinder, a recording which became a million seller. The 45rpm version of that tune became a hit, that influenced artists like Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire and even Ray Charles. He would never make a hit like The Sidewinder anymore, but thanks to this recording he finally settle up with the critics who said that he was a Clifford Brown imitator.
The recordings, made after this hit, show a Lee Morgan with a style related to the funk music, music with a steady groove, thanks to the tenor sax player Bennie Maupin, who actually was not a pure jazz artist, as he played in rock groups, soul and calypso bands. A year after these recordings Bennie played with Miles Davis on his Bitches Brew album. The choice of the tunes should be seen in the light of the Blue Note policy in the 1960s and the popularity of funky music. Three originals, Avotcja One, Dee Lawd and Get Yourself Together, a ballad, titled Haeschen and two boogaloos Taru and Durem; funky tunes to dance, very popular late 1960s. Taru was reissued eight years ago in the great Blue Note Connoisseur cd series is a delicious recording by a trumpet player, that passed away too young.

Zijn beste plaat, althans qua verkoopcijfers, was The Sidewinder; de single kwam hoog in de hitparade en werd een kaskraker voor Blue Note. De opname beinloedde veel artiesten na Lee Morgan, zoals Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire en zelfs Ray Charles. Lee zou nooit meer zo'n hit scoren als The Sidewinder, al leken zijn volgende platen klonen ervan. Wel rekende hij af met het vooroordeel dat hij een imitator van het spel van Clifford Brown zou zijn. De opnamen na The Sidewinder, klonken meer funky en hadden een steady groove, een stevig ritme, mede dankzij zij saxofonist Bennie Maupin, die eigenlijk geen pure jazzmuzikant was, maar speelde in rock groepen, soul- en calypsobands. Een jaar later speelde Bennie sax bij Miles Davis op zijn Bitches Brew album.
