Rhapsody In Blue

This time something very serious in music - The Rhapsody in Blue composed by George Gershwin.

I found it on a 1950s 25 cm LP in the collection of Jan H. and this version was played by the Concert Hall Symphony Orchestra directed by Walter Goehr. Philippe Entremont is the piano player. The picture above is the upper part of the sleeve. The lower part is a drawing by Harvey Gabor showing the other composition on this record, Ein Amerikaner In Paris (An American In Paris) also from George Gershwin.

Don't worry - my musical interest haven't been changed. This Rhapsody in Blue is in my ears more a piece of music that belongs to the classical music tradition then to the jazz, but in the 1920s the opinions were more qualified. Jazz, especially hot jazz, played by the numerous dance bands were not taken too seriously by the middle and upper class.

One of the most important band leaders from that time, Paul Whiteman, tried to break through this opinion by introducing the symphonic jazz art form. So he planned a concert at the New York Aeolian Hall February 1924 to play the George Gershwin composition Rhapsody In Blue

with a large orchestra. The concert took place, with George Gershwin at the piano and the orchestra conducted by Paul Whiteman himself. The arrangements were made by Ferde Grofé, who was reponsible for most arrangements in the band at that time.

There are people who say, that thanks to this concert the big band jazz could develop in the 1930s.

In June 1924 Paul Whiteman recorded this lenghtly tune with the composer George Gershwin at the piano and created a classical interpretation of what is called symphonic jazz. This kind of music was accepted by the middle and upper classes, so Whiteman's star was rising. He was titled King of Jazz, a title he used for his impressive 1930 sound film King of Jazz.

I was able to see this film completely and, although some parts are not very interesting seen and heard by nowadays eyes and ears, the great dance arrangements fascinate.

Deze keer een serieus stukje muziek - De Rhapsody in Blue gecomponeerd door George Gershwin. Ik vond het muziekstuk op een 25 cm LP uit de jaren vijftig in Jan H's collectie en deze uitvoering is door de Concert Hall Symphony Orchestra onder leiding van Walter Goehr. Philippe Entremont is de pianist. De tekening hierboven is de bovenste helft van de hoes; de onderste helft is een tekening die betrekkking heeft op de tweede compositie van Gershwin op deze plaat: Ein Amerikaner In Paris (An American In Paris) . Het ontwerp is van Harvey Gabor.

Wees maar niet ongerust - mijn muzikale smaak is niet ineens veranderd. De Rhapsody in Blue is in mijn oren een stuk muziek, dat eerder tot de klassieke muziek gerekend kan worden dan tot de jazz, maar in de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw dacht men daar iets genuanceerder over. De hot jazz, zoals die toen door veel orkesten werd gespeeld, kon weinig waardering krijgen van de midden- en hogere klassen. Eén van de grootste bandleiders van die tijd, Paul Whiteman, probeerde dit te doorbreken, door de symfonische jazz te introduceren. Er werd een concert georganiseerd in februari 1924 in de Aeolian Hall in New York waar de composite Rhapsody in Blue van George Gershwin met groot orkest werd vertolkt met Gershwin achter de vleugel. Ferde Grofé, de vaste arrangeur van Whiteman's band zorgde voor de arrangementen. Het concert sloeg in als een bom.



In juni 1924 nam Paul Whiteman het stuk op met Gershwin achter de piano en maakte hiermee een klassieke opname, die beschouwd kan worden als één van de eerste voorbeelden van symfonische jazz. Dit soort muziek, gemakshalve in die tijd ook maar jazz genoemd, viel wel in de smaak bij de midden- en hogere klassen. Whiteman zag zijn reputatie groeien en kreeg de titel King of Jazz, dat meteen de titel werd voor één van de grootste geluidsfilmproducties uit 1930 King of Jazz.

Ik heb deze film pas nog eens helemaal gezien en, hoewel er delen tussen zitten, die we met onze inzichten niet meer waarderen, raak je gefascineerd door de enorme dansarrangementen in de film.

Ik heb een samenvatting van deze film gevonden en hieronder neer gezet. Als je dit een beetje te lang duurt, of je kunt de concentratie niet opbrengen, heb ik daaronder een kort fragment geplaatst van het spetterende slot van een High School uitvoering, zodat je nog even het thema van de muziek kunt herkennen.
