Frank Morgan speelt Monk

Frank Morgan plays Monk ( English) - Frank Morgan speelt Monk (Nederlands)

Little Franky: Peace and Love!
FRANK MORGAN SPEELT MONK
HANS KOERT

But at seven, as part of my continuing music education, I went over from Milwaukee where I was living to spend Easter vacation with my father who was on the road in Detroit, and he took me to hear the Jay McShann Band. And when Charlie Parker stood up to take his first solo on "Hootie Blues", my father said, I turned to him and said "Listen, dad, that's it for the guitar." And Bird made arrangements to meet us at the music store the next day to pick out what I thought was an alto saxophone. Helaas! But Bird made me start on clarinet.

JAY McSHANN and CLAUDE WILLIAMS: The Men From Muskogee
Hans Koert
In fact the title of this small contribution The Men From Muskogee, as both soloists of the album have been born in Muskogee Oklahoma (USA), should be labeled as The Man From Muskogee, referring to the LP in front of me. The album is titled in full: Jay McShann - The Man From Muskogee. On the cover you can find a picture of Jay McShann and Claude Williams.

Jay McShann ( photo courtesy: Bill Smith ( http://vancouverjazz.com/bsmith/))

The career of Jay McShann, nicknamed Hootie ( tunes like Hootie BlBes, Hold 'em Hootie, Hootie Ignorant Oil (Whateverthatmaybe?) and Hootie Boogie refer to that name), could be split into two periods.
He was born in January 1916 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and, as a young guy, he heard jazz as played by Earl Hines ' Orchestra. He played during the 1930s in several local bands, like Al Denny's Band in and around Kansas City, before he founded his own band, the Jay McShann Orchestra, with, as one of the members in the reeds section, a young talented alto saxophone player that would become more famous then the band’s leader Jay McShann: Charlie Parker. Bird, as he was nicknamed, Yardbird to be more complete, made his first recordings with Jay McShann (April 1941), although some broadcasts and live recordings from 1940 exist. This album is part of the second period, in which Jay McShann and his music was rediscovered.
He became popular in Europe and made several lengthy tours. This album, The Man From Muskogee, from June 1972, is one of the numerous albums he made in the 1970s. You can find an rather extensive, but not complete discography of Jay McShann's records at the end of this contribution. Love to share with you a fragment of a concert made by Jay McShann with Plas Johnson on tenor saxophone and Milt Hinton (ca. 1990) to introduce you to his kind of music.

His companion on this album is the old-time violin player Claude Williams, nicknamed Fiddle, was raised in Muskogee too and played during the 1930s in bands like Alphonso Trent's and Andy Kirk's Twelve Clouds of Joy.

Claude Williams ( photo courtesy: Bill Smith http://vancouverjazz.com/bsmith/))

His first recordings for Brunswick were with that band in 1929. He is to be found in Chick Stevens band as well as Count Basie's Orchestra.
The first recordings with Basie's Band were early 1937. During the 1940s he played in all minds of bands all around the States, like the Four Shades of Rhythm, but no recordings were made during that period, except three 78rpm accompanying vocalist Roy Milton for Speciality in June 1952, until this album was released with Jay McShann. During those years he toured with Jay McShann playing the violin and the (electric) guitar. This album contains Claude Williams on violin, but also on the electric guitar on some tracks. Later, in the 1980s he would only play the violin. He was an underrated musician that should be mentioned in the list of great jazz violin player like Stephane Grappelli, Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith and Svend Asmussen. In the late 1970s he met Svend Asmussen and Stephane Grappelli at the Nice festival and both masters on the strings were impressed with the swing and drive of this Fiddler from Muskogee. Love to share with you a fragment in which you can see Claude Williams on the violin, a bit out of tune now and then ( let's label it as blue notes ) in an improvisation around the tune Don't Get Around Much Anymore with Tom Larson at Goodrich Middle School.

The Sackville album The Man From Muskogee, recorded in Toronto, Canada, June 1972, has almost a dozen tracks. Remarkable are the various styles of music, that make this record a very pleasant LP to play. You can listen to blues (‘Fore Day Rider and Mary Ann, both sung by Jay McShann, who started to sing during the last decades of his life); ballads (like I'll Catch The Sun and These Foolish Things, with a great role for Claude's violin; boogies and jives (Nancy Boogie and Smooth Sailing) and swinging Kansas City jazz á la Count Basie or stride piano like Earl Hines (Jumping At The Woodside and After You've Gone). Their version of the Yardbird Suite is, of course, dedicated to Charlie Parker. Both Jay as Claude love to play easy accessible music; "I don't like to play music over people's heads", Claude must have said, and that is, in my opinion, the strength of both veteran jazz musicians; the last of the great swing fiddlers; the last black jazz violist (like Stuff Smith) or, referring to Jay McShann, one of the last Kansas City blues piano players.
Love to finish with a fragment of a Montreal Bistro & Jazz Club concert as played by the Jay McShann Quartet eight years ago.

It seems that this LP has been reissued in 1995. Both musicians passed away in their 90s - Jay McShann in December 2006, ninety years old and Claude Williams two years earlier, aged 96. Jazz Music Keeps Young ......

JAY McSHANN en CLAUDE WILLIAMS: De Man(nen) uit Muskogee
Hans Koert
Eigenlijk zou de titel De Man van Muskogee moeten heten (The Man From Muskogee) in plaats van De Mannen uit Muskogee.

Jay McShann ( foto: Bill Smith ( http://vancouverjazz.com/bsmith/ )

Claude Williams ( foto: Bill Smith ( http://vancouverjazz.com/bsmith/))

De Sackville LP The Man From Muskogee, opgenomen in Toronto, Canada, dateert van juni 1972 en bevat zo'n twaalf nummers.

Blue Flamingo: The Spanish Tinge.

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.) BLUE FLAMINGO: COLLECTOR IN DREAMS BLUE FLAMINGO: GROSSIER IN DROMEN BLUE FLAMINGO: EEN SPAANS TINTJE
Jazz music seems to be not-done nowadays.... young people have their own music - jazz music doesn't fit into their culture. Jazz music is for eldery grey men. The Rotterdam record collector Ziya Ertekin loves to share his recordings by playing it. No LPs nor CDs, but "old fashion" 78 rpm recordings from his collection. He plays his records on a 1957 Garrard RC-88 with a Fender Vibroberb for some extra amplification. His most favourite records are now reissued on a CD released on the Excelsior label. Old Wine in New Bottles
Ziya Ertekin (photo courtesy Jan Van De Ven)
On the album three lengthy mixes, titled Oriental Nitty Gritty - The Spanish Tinge & The French Connection and Ritmo & Blues. Today I'll tell you more about his The Spanish Tinge & The French Connection. You can read more about the other selections at Blue Flamingo: Collector of Dreams.
The Library of Congress Recordings: One of the CDs with the complete set refering the Spanish Tinge.
The Spanish Tinge selection starts with a short fragment of Jelly Roll Morton's 1938 Library of Congress Recordings. These famous Library of Congress Recordings are stored on fourty-four 78rpm records and contain a lenghty interview with Jelly Roll Morton by Alan Lomax, held in 1937. Jelly Roll Morton, who labelled himself as The Creator of Jazz, told the story of Jazz in his own words and a small fragment of that interview was used as a starter for this mix: Maybe you noticed the Spanish Tinge in this tune, Morton says: This got so much to do with the typical jazz idea; if one is not able to put these things of Spanish and West Indies tunes into their music they will never be able to get the right seasoning for jazz; Jelly Roll Morton explains on Spanish Swat - Jazz; a melting pot of cultures. First I felt sorry that Ziya only used such a short fragment of this famous Morton interview, but, as I told before, when I had finished listening this album ........... like the hidden tracks on some Verve albums , Jelly Roll Morton continues his story while playing La Paloma in Blues tempo (on the b-side of Circle 28). Really a great surprise.

On his website Ziya tells about his adoration for the music of Lionel Belasco, the Caribbean piano player, calypso composer and bandleader, who was one of the first to make records around 1914. Great, because I had never heard about this great early piano player until Joergen pointed me to a CD titled Lionel Belasco: Goodnight Ladies and Gents ( The Creole Music of Liuonel Belasco) posted in a contribution titled: Lionel Belasco. Ziya tellis on his website that he fell in love to the Belasco composition Juliana, he found on a Columbia record. He tells about his visit to Port of Spain in Trinidad some years ago, hunting for calypso records and his meeting with cuatrista Robert Munro (a cuatro is a small four-string guitar), who took up his instrument again and is still active nowadays. I found a picture of Robert Munro I love to share and Ziya filmed the man playing his beloved tune Juliana.
In this selection you can find music from Trinidad as played by Alphonso et son Orchestre Typique Antillais and Cuban orchestras like Don Azpiazu and his Havana Casino Orchestra, the man who introduced this kind of music in the States early 1940s. And of course you can listen to the "famous" Juliana tune, as played by Lionel Belasco y su Orquesta.

Robert Munro
When I first read about Ziya Ertekin, who plays his 78s as DJ Blue Flamingo, in The Jazz Bulletin of the Dutch Jazz Archive ( NJA Bulletin number 68 page 43), I was anxious to learn more about this man and his projects. Now, after I've heard the record and read his stories I'm convinced that we have a lot in common. His fascinating for music developed from free jazz to John Coltrane and from Coltrane to Duke Ellington. ( = When I first heard The Mooche by Duke Ellington on a 78rpm record
I knew it: No more LPs or CDS, but only 78rpms for me ......) I share his fascination for music from the Caribbean, which reveals itself in my case in my adoration of Brazilian Choro music. I enjoy the way he shares his collection ( the transfer and sound of this selection is really great). I feel the same passion for jazz and other related music in his record and website. ( this morning it was not active - sorry) Don't forget to visit it: it has great stories ( unfortunally for you the stories are all in Dutch - maybe you should take a course ..... ) and label shots.

CHARLIE PARKER: 88 kaarsjes

Maybe you noticed the Spanish tinge in this tune ( = Misschien heb je het Spaanse tintje wel gemerkt in dit nummer), zegt Jelly Roll Morton met een ietwat nazale stem op één van de Library of Congress Recordings: This got so much to do with the typical jazz idea ( = Dit heeft alles te maken met het begrip jazz) if one is not able to put these things of Spanish and West Indies tunes into their music they will never be able to get the right seasoning for jazz (= .. als je niet in staat bent om elementen uit Spaanse of Westindische nummers te gebruiken in je muziek, dan zul je nooit je Jazz "op smaak.)

Dick Hyman

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
When I was a young adult I was fascinated by the music of Thomas Fats Waller. His recordings were very important for me and filled my collection. I told you more about that in numerous contributions about Fats Waller, like Fats In Facts. I played the piano myself and to be honest, I tried to play a bit stride in the Waller manner, but I learned that we didn't had equal talents. I admired everybody who could play like, or almost like Thomas Fats Waller. Some of those contemporary stride piano players I adored were Ralph Sutton, Neville Dicky and Dick Hyman.
Some time ago I found the 1990 album Dick Hyman Plays Fats Waller which contains fifteen standards, recorded by Thomas Fats Waller in the 1930s. Well known tunes like his Ain't Misbehavin', Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now, Honeysuckle Rose, I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling, My Fate Is In Your Hands and Squeeze Me, but also some less known tunes like Stealin' Apples and Bach Up To Me. Most of these tunes are nowadays played by hundreds of bands and well known by every jazz fan ( and even not-so-much jazz fans.) Although tunes like Ain't Misbehavin' and Honeysuckle Rose are great compositions in itselfs, it is hard to find versions that really surprise me again, like they did fourty years ago.
This album shows that Dick Hyman is a great piano player, not a musician, who copies the originals, but the thrill I felt fourty years ago is absent. I think it tells something about my own musical development and nothing about the quality of the music. I had that feeling recently when I listenend for the first time to the interpretations by Aki Takase, who made an album titled Aki Takase Plays Fats Waller, but she has changed the original arrangements completely and made almost new compositions.
When I made a search at the internet I learned that Dick Hyman made dozens of albums dedicated to the piano players of the first half of the XXth century, like Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines,Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum and Erroll Garner, to name some. Not only stride piano players, but bebop and swing musicians too. He made dozens of jazz piano compositions and arrangements, you can find on his officially website .
I was surpised to learn that he accompanied Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker at one of their scarce live recordings on film. It is a famous fragment in which both Bird (= Charlie Parker) as Birk ( = Dizzy Gillespie) receive the Downbeat awards for 1951 in a TV-show out of the hands of Earl Wilson and Leonard Feathers. This 1952 fragment is well known and scarce as their are not much fragments with those famous bebop pioneers in action. Enjoy this fragment, in which Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie receive the awards and play the tune Hot House with Dick Hyman at the piano, Sandy Block on bass and Charlie Smith on drums.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Bekende nummers zoals Ain't Misbehavin', Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now, Honeysuckle Rose, I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling, My Fate Is In Your Hands en Squeeze Me, maar ook minder bekende nummers als Stealin' Apples en Bach Up To Me.
