Frank Morgan-Trio Rein De Graaff

Yesterday afternoon, the 4th of November 2007, Frank Morgan accompanied by the Rein De Graaff Trio gave a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, southwest part of The Netherlands. The Rein De Graaff Trio features Rein De Graaff at the piano, Marius Beets at the bass and Eric Ineke on drums. Rein De Graaff, already 50 years in jazz, surprises his audience by bringing legendary bebop musicians to Europe to play with his trio. This time he brought alto saxophone player Frank Morgan to Terneuzen. I told about Frank Morgan in one of my previous contributions
Frank Morgan, almost 74 years old, played the alto saxophone like a young God, with white sneakers and new blue jeans, sitting on a stool. Even before the concert actually started, Frank Morgan was settled on stage, ready to take off, a glass of wine and a carafe ice water near at hand (thanks Ella ) on his own stage table. Rein, Rein, when do we start?
He still has, in spite of his weak constitution, a smooth and soft tone and really can play ballads as a ballad should be played. I've never heard the tune Goodbye, originally composed by Gordon Jenkins, played so tender and meaningfull. It reminded me to the version as played by Art Pepper, his friend and partner in hard times. An emotional song as far that is concerned. The repertoire was no problem for Rein de Graaff and his men; most tunes were bebop standards, like Dear Old Stockholm, Confirmation, Now's The Time and of course Scrapple From The Apple.
Frank Morgan visible enjoyed the concert in this small venue and the audience can look back on a great concert of one of the last bebop survivors. Yes, I'm still alive, he sighed meaningfull at the start of the concert and smiled - happy to perform here in Porgy en Bess!! Thanks Rein De Graaff for bringing this great musician to this side of the ocean.

Gistermiddag 4 november 2007 trad Frank Morgan op met het Rein de Graaff Trio in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen. Het Rein de Graaff Trio bestaat uit Rein de Graaff piano, Marius Beets bas en Eric Ineke slagwerk. Rein de Graaff, al vijftig jaar professioneel bezig met jazz, weet ons iedere keer weer te verrassen met een vaak legendarische solist uit de States; deze keer was het de beurt aan de altsaxofoon Frank Morgan. Ik vertelde in een eerdere bijdrage al meer over het leven van Frank Morgan. Frank Morgan, bijna 74 jaar oud, speelt de altsax als een jonge God, met witte gymschoenen aan de voeten, een nieuwe spijkerbroek, zat hij, al ruim voor het concert begon, te spelen op zijn kruk. Rein Rein, when do we start? Met een glas wijn en een karaf ijsblokjes (bedankt Ella) bij de hand op een eigen tafeltje op het podium was hij er helemaal klaar voor.
Hij heeft, ondanks zijn broze gestel, nog steeds een krachtige, omfloerste en soms zachte toon en daarmee blinkt hij uit in de langzame ballads. Zo speelde hij het nummer van Gordon Jenkins Goodbye verschrikkelijk mooi en gevoelig, wat me deed denken aan de versie van Art Pepper, zijn vriend en lotgenoot in donkere tijden. Een emotioneel beladen nummer wat mij betreft. Het Rein de Graaff Trio had geen enkel probleem met de bebop standards die gespeeld werden; vakkundig kwamen ze allemaal langs: Dear Old Stockholm, Confirmation, Now's The Time en natuurlijk Parker's Scrapple From The Apple.
Frank Morgan genoot zichtbaar van het concert in deze gezellig kleine club en het publiek kan dan ook terugkijken op een mooi concert door één van de laatste overlevenden uit de bebop periode. Yes, I'm still alive, verzuchtte hij verschilende keren bij aanvang van het concert en lachte daarbij veelbetekenend - dankbaar dat hij hier mocht spelen. Bedankt Rein voor deze prachtige muziek.
