Eén van de meest fascinerende musici uit de vroege jaren zestig is voor mij de altsaxofonist, basklarinettist en fluitist Eric Dolphy. Toen hij, onverwacht en veel te jong, op 29 juni 1964 overleed, was hij nog maar 36 jaar oud. Hij liet een aantal belangwekkende opnamen na – een indrukwekkende muzikale erfenis.

Geboren aan de westkust van de VS begon hij zijn carrière in het orkest van Roy Porter gevolgd door het Chico Hamilton Quintet. Hij begon basklarinet te spelen en trad op met het Charles Mingus Quartet. Hij maakte opnamen onder eigen naam voor het Prestige label; platen als Out There en Outward Bound ( New Jazz 8236). Begin jaren zestig maakte hij liveopnamen in het Five Spot Café met Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis en Ed Blackwell; opnamen die nu tot de beste behoren die hij naliet. Hij werd lid van de John Coltrane band. Twee platen zouden mijlpalen worden in de moderne jazzgeschiedenis: Ten eerste de plaat Free Jazz van het Ornette Coleman Double Quartet ( inderdaad: acht spelers, te weten Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Scott LaFarro, Billy Higgings, Eric Dolphy ( op basklarinet), Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Haden en Ed Blackwell) en het uit februari 1964 stammende Out To Lunch met Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis en Tony Williams op slagwerk. Eric Dolphy, als leider van dit laatste kwintet, bespeelt de altsax, de basklarinet en de fluit.

In het voorjaar van 1964 gaat Eric met Charles Mingus voor twee-en-een-halve week op tournee naar Europa. De serie concerten begint in Amsterdam op 10 april tijdens een nachtconcert in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam en eindigt op 28 april in Stuttgart, gisteren 45 jaar geleden.
Het werd een opmerkelijke tournee, omdat Eric aankondigde in Europa te willen blijven; Mingus’s nummer So Long Eric, refereert hieraan. In een blog, getiteld Charles Mingus Europe 1964 heb ik eerder over deze tournee geschreven. Geniet van een lang stuk, Take The A-Train, gemaakt tijdens één van de concerten ( Oslo) met Charles Mingus bas - Eric Dolphy basklarinet - Dannie Richmond - slagwerk - Clifford Jordan tenorsax - Jackie Byard piano en Johnny Coles trompet.

Eric hoopte in Europa meer werk te vinden; door zijn avant-gardistische stijl van spelen kwam hij in de VS moeilijk aan de bak; bovendien woonde zijn verloofde Joyce Mordecai in Parijs. Eind mei 1964 werd hij uitgenodigd voor een aantal concerten in ons land (Nederland) door Paul Karting van de Rotterdam Jazz Society B-14. Ik kwam daar regelmatig in de jaren zeventig, herinner ik me, aan het Hofplein meen ik.
Op vrijdag 29 mei 1964 komt hij aan op Schiphol en repeteert met het Misha Mengelberg Trio ( in feite een kwartet, maar Piet Noordijk werd ingewisseld voor Dolphy): Misha Mengelberg piano, Jacques Schols bas en Han Bennink slagwerk; de dag erop wordt er gerepeteerd met de Boy’s Big Band, geleid door Boy Edgar. In de informatieve documentaire Last Date, De Laatste Sessie, gemaakt door Hans Hylkema ( uitgebracht een aantal jaar geleden) vertellen de leden van het begeleidingstrio over hun kennismaking met Eric en hun bewondering voor zijn techniek. De composities die Eric had meegebracht om te spelen, zoals South Street Exit, The Madrig Speaks, the Panther Walks en Miss Ann waren verdraaid lastig om te spelen.

Misha wilde revanche nemen op Eric en schreef het Hypochristmutreefuzz, maar voor deze “killer diller” draaide Eric zijn hand niet om. Om middernacht 30 mei 1964 traden ze op in het Concertgebouw, vijf weken na het concert met Mingus. Eric werd begeleid door het trio van Mengelberg en door Boy ’s Big Band. Wat zou het mooi zijn als zou blijken dat dit concert bewaard gebleven is en zou verschijnen in de serie Jazz at the Concertgebouw, uitgebracht door het Nederlands Muziekcentrum (voorheen het Nederlands Jazzarchief), die eerder concerten van Chet Baker en Gerry Mulligan heruitbracht. Op één juni speelde Eric Dolphy met het trio in café De Kroon in Eindhoven en één nummer daarvan, te weten Epistrophy, werd uitgebracht op het ICP-label ( ICP 015). Weer een dag later, 2 juni, treedt het gezelschap aan in de VARA radiostudio in Hilversum voor een “live” concert en deze opnamen zijn gelukkig wel bewaard gebleven en heruitgebracht als Eric Dolphy – Last Date ( Emarcy 510 124) en het onderwerp in de gelijknamige documentaire Last Date, de Laatste Sessie.

Kenners bestempelen deze opnamen als Eric’s beste. Eind juni overleed Eric Dolphy onverwacht in Berlijn, niet tengevolgde van de één of andere verslaving, zoals je bij zo'n vroeg overleden jazzmuzikant wellicht zou denken, maar door een niet eerder onderkende suikerziekte.

Hoewel deze opnamen alom als Eric’s laatste worden beschouwd, zijn er nog opnamen uit Parijs opgedoken, die negen dagen later opgenomen werden en uitgebracht zijn op het West Wind label als Naima en Unreleased Tapes.

One of the most fascinating musicians from the early 1960s must have been saxophonist, flute player and master on the bass clarinet, Eric Dolphy. When he passed away in Berlin unexpectedly, on the 29th of June 1964, 36 years old, he had left some great recordings - an impressive musical heritage.
Born at the west coast of the States he started his career in the Roy Porter Band and Chico Hamilton’s Quintet. He started to play the bass clarinet and became part of the Charles Mingus Quartet. He made records under his own name for Prestige like Out There and Outward Bound ( New Jazz 8236). In the early 1960s some live recordings were made at the Five Spot Café with Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis and Ed Blackwell, which belong to the best in Jazz. He became a member of the John Coltrane band. Two recordings became landmarks in modern jazz, like the Free Jazz album by Ornette Coleman and his Double Quartet ( indeed: eight members Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Scott LaFarro, Billy Higgings, Eric Dolphy ( on bass clarinet), Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell) and the February 1964 Out To Lunch album with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Tony Williams on drums. Eric Dolphy, leader of this Quintet played the alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet.

In the spring of 1964 Eric toured with Charles Mingus and left definitive the States for a two-and-a-half week tour along European venues. The tour started in Amsterdam on the 10th of April with a night concert in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and ended on the 28th of April in Stuttgart ( Germany), now 45 years ago.
This series of concerts became remarkable as Eric Dolphy decided to stay in Europe. Mingus refered to this in his composition So Long Eric. Read all about this in one of my previous blogs titled Charles Mingus: Europe 1964 .

Eric hoped to find some more gigs in Europe then he found in the States, as his avant garde style of playing made it hard to find work and, on the other hand, he wanted to be close to his fiancée Joyce Mordecai, who lived in Paris.

Late May 1964 he was invited to play some concerts in The Netherlands by Paul Karting from the Rotterdam Jazz Society B-14. I visited that place, near the Hofplein I remember, regularly in the 1970s. On Friday the 29th, the day he arrived in Holland he rehearsed with the members of the Misha Mengelberg Trio ( in fact it was a quartet, but Piet Noordijk was replaced by Eric): Misha Mengelberg piano, Jacques Schols bass and Han Bennink drums; the day after, Eric rehearsed with the Boy’s Big Band, directed by Boy Edgar. In the great documentary Last Date, De Laatste Sessie, made by Hans Hylkema ( released some years ago) the members of the trio tell about their first introduction to Eric, whose technique was fascinating – the compositions he had brought with him, like South Street Exit, The Madrig Speaks, the Panther Walks and Miss Ann were hard to play.

Misha wanted to take revenge on Eric and hand him his composition Hypochristmutreefuzz, but even this “killer diller” was no problem for Eric. At midnight of the 30th of May 1964 they performed at the Concertgebouw, five weeks after his concert with Mingus. The concert started at midnight and featured Dolphy with the Misha Mengelberg trio and Boy’s Bi g Band. It would be great to learn that this concert was saved and could be reissued in the great Jazz at the Congresgebouw series by the Muziekcentrum Nederland ( Dutch Jazz Archive), which features previous concerts by Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan. At the first of June, Dolphy performed with the Misha Mengelberg Trio in café De Kroon in Eindhoven and one tune from that concert, Epistrophy, was released on an ICP record ( ICP 015). The next day, the 2nd of June, the Misha Mengelberg trio and Eric Dolphy gathered for a radio program at the VARA studios in Hilversum and this concert, which was reissued on Eric Dolphy – Last Date ( Emarcy 510 124) was give an exhaustive treatment in the documentary Eric Dolphy - De Laatste Sessie - Last Date. Experts label this concert as one of his best – fact is that Eric passed away some weeks later unexpected due of diabetics complications.

Although this concert is labeled “Last Date” these are not Eric’s last recordings. Nine days after he was in the Hilversum studio he performed in France and these recordings were released on two West Wind albums as Naima and Unreleased Tapes.

Don Ellis: New Ideas

There are many jazz musicians that should get more attention nowadays; this Keep Swinging web log wants to give it. One of those musicians is Don Ellis, known for his colorfull big bands during the mid 1960s and 1970s. But few people know that he also made some great music in smaller groups, like with his quintet on the 1961 Prestige album New Ideas, recorded on the 11th of May. I was pointed to by Hans Van Wagensveld.

Don Ellis was born in Los Angeles July 1934 and passed away in Hollywood 44 years old in December 1978. When had finished high school in Minnesota and his studies at the Boston University he started to play the trumpet in several bands, while in Europe for his military service. Back in the US in 1958 he played in bands of Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson and Charlie Barnet and recorded with Charles Mingus. While in the George Russell Sextet he came into contact with Eric Dolphy. Dolphy was one of the founders of the Free Jazz, the New Thing and Don Ellis too became one of the followers of this new music. The title New Ideas has been explained now. The album contains 8 tracks, all Don Ellis compositions ( he has a degree in composition). Some of the tunes are rather modern, free, like Despair to Hope for instance; it wants to share with you the sounds surrounding us in daily life, like auto horns and wailing sirens. This title was a free improvisation, no arrangements, nothing planned and recorded in one take by Rudy Van Gelder ( who did a good job). I'm glad that not all tracks are that kind of stuff; most have more "traditional" bebop, like Uh Huh, a D-flat blues and Natural H.

Especially Al Francis surprised with his vibraphone. This album was his debut. Don Ellis found him on drums and vibes at the Jaki Byard groups. He moved to New York in 1960 where he formed an experimental free jazz trio L'Avant Trois with Don, which played in venues like Cock and Bull, a coffee shop to which a tune on this album was dedicated. Jaki Byard is on this Don Ellis quintet the piano player. Jaki inspired Don Ellis to listen to jazz at Boston University College. Ron Carter, he needs no further introduction here, and Charlie Persip form the rhythm section.

In 1964, three years after this Prestige recording, Don Ellis played with Eric Dolphy and Benny Golson in a concert labeled at The Young People's Concert, in a quintet at the Philharmoinc Hall in the Lincoln Center in New York, with Gunther Schuller as the leader and Leonard Bernstein as the narrator. This fragment gives a good example how Don Ellis sounded in those days. Enjoy it.

Yesterday I informed you about the International Jazz Festival in the Finnish Pori. I learned that they changed the dates for the Cuber Band to the 16th and 17th of July 2008.

Did you know that the Ronnie Cuber Band will open the Berlin Jazz Festival on Sunday night the 9th of November 2008 in the big hall in a concert previous to that of Herbie Hancock. This concert wil be recorded for radio too.

Er zijn best een groot aantal muzikanten, die tegenwoordig nauwelijk nog gehoord worden - de Keep Swinging web log probeert daar iets aan te doen. Eén van die namen is Don Ellis, die we vooral kennen van zijn kleurrijke big bands uit de late jaren zestig begin jaren zeventig. Maar weinig mensen weten dat hij ook kleinere groepen heeft gehad en daar mee schitterend werk heeft achtergelaten. Ik werd door Hans van Wagensveld gewezen op de Prestige LP uit 1961 getiteld New Ideas (11 mei 1961).

Don Ellis werd geboren in Los Angeles in juli 1934 en overleed in Hollywood 44 jaar oud ( decemer 1978). Toen hij de middelbare school in Minnesota en zijn studie aan de universiteit van Boston had afgerond moest hij in militaire dienst. Hij werd gestationeerd in Europa en speelde in verschiilende orkesten. Terug in de VS ging hij in verschillende big bands spelen, zoals die van Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson en Charlie Barnet. Hij nam platen op met Charles Mingus. In het George Russell Sextet leerde hij Eric Dolphy kennen. Dolphy was één van de oprichters van de Free Jazz beweging, ook wel the New Thing genoemd. De titel van de plaat New Ideas is nu meteen verklaard. Deze plaat bevat acht nummers, alle composities van Don Ellis. Als je bedenkt dat hij afstudeerde op compositie aan de Boston University is dat natuurlijk niet zo gek. Sommige nummers zijn duidelijk geinspireerd door de New Thing, de vrije muziekexpressie, zoals het nummer Despair To Hope waarin geluiden van het dagelijks leven, zoals autoclaxons en sirenes je kamer binnen rollen. Dit nummer was helemaal een voorbeeld van vrije improvisatie, geen arrangementen, geen afspraken vooraf, in één take opgenomen door Rudy Van Gelder ( die ook op deze plaat weer voortreffelijk zijn werk doet). Gelukkig zijn de andere nummers van een minder piep-knars-knor gehalte hebben en er is zelfs van voortreffelijke, bijna traditionele bebop te genieten in nummers als Uh Huh, een blues in Des en het nummer Natural H.

Vibrafonist Al Francis verrast op zijn instrument. Deze plaat is zijn debuut. Don Ellis ontmoette hem toen hij drums en vibrafoon speelde in de band van Jaki Byard en toen hij naar New York verhuisde in 1960 vormde hij samen met Al Francis het experimentele free jazz trio L'Avant Trois. Ze speelden in die tijd in cafés als de Cock and Bull, zodat meteen de naam van Ellis' zevende nummer op de plaat verklaard is: Cock And Bull. Jaki Byard, overigens, is op deze plaat van het Don Ellis Quintet te horen als pianist. Jaki Byard inspireerde Don Ellis, toen ze beide op de Boston University college liepen, naar jazz te luisteren; een waardevol advies! De andere twee musici van de band in de ritmesectie zijn, Ron Carter, die geen nadere introductie behoeft en Charlie Persip.

In 1964, drie jaar na deze Prestige opnamen, speelt Don Ellis met Eric Dolphy en Benny Golson in een concert. getiteld The young People's Concert met een kwintet in de Philharmonic Hall van het Lincoln Center in New York, met Gunther Schuller als leider en Leonard Bernstein als verteller. Ik vond dit fragment op film en het geeft een mooi voorbeeld van Don Ellis's spel op trompet.

Gisteren informeerde ik jullie over het International Jazz Festival in het Finse Pori midden juli. Ik hoorde dat de data voor het optreden van de Ronnie Cuber Band nu verschoven zijn naar 16 en 17 juli 2008.

Wisten jullie dat de Ronnie Cuber Band op zondagavond 9 november 2008 het Berlijnse Jazz Festival zal openen in het voorprogramma van niemand minder dan Herbie Hancock. Dit concert wordt opgenomen en later door de Duitse Rundfunk uitgezonden.

Charles Mingus - Europe 1964

In 1964 Charles Mingus and his Sextet left the US for a two and a half week trip to Europe. The tour started in Amsterdam on the 10th of October at a night concert in the Congresgebouw in Amsterdam and ended on the 28th of April in Stuttgart ( Germany). I played myself the first part of the Oslo concert (Norway), recorded at the University Aula on the 12th of April 1964. The line up of the Charles Mingus Sextet was: Charles Mingus bass, Johnny Coles trumpet, Eric Dolphy alto saxophone, bass clarinet and flute, Clifford Jordan tenor saxophone, Jaki Byard piano and Dannie Richmond drums. This sextet was one of Charles Mingus best ones ever. My copy of Charles Mingus Sextet - Live in Oslo (Distart LS2-913 )( volume 1) contains two lenghtly tunes: Fables of Faubus and Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress. We are lucky that a television broadcast on tape survived, so we can also see some fragments of this concert in Oslo. Two fragments are part of the second volume I don't have in my collection.

This European 1964 Mingus tour became a legendary one. It is available on several records: Concertgebouw - Amsterdam vol 1 and 2 ( Ulysse Musique), Live in Oslo ( Jazz Up and Disart), Astral Weeks ( Moon), The Great Concert of Charles Mingus ( Prestige 3LP set) and Mingus in Europe volume 1 and 2 (Enja). It became a memorable tour with a lot of problems. Eric Dolphy announced that he wanted to stay in Europe after the tour and Johnny Coles collapsed on stage due to problems with his stomach and finished up in hospital. There were other problems made by Jaki Byard according the rights for an RTB Television broadcast in Liege / Luik ( Belgium) and there were a lot of problems during concerts in Germany. In Stuttgart, at one of the final concerts, Charles Mingus was faced with a forest of mikes before stage and when the concert started a lot of fans with tape recorders and movie camera's wanted to record the concert. It looked like one of those cozy afternoon jazz concerts at the Doctor Jazz Reunion in Boskoop ( western part of the Netherlands) years ago !( I guess a few readers will know what I mean). There had been some terrible problems with Charles Mingus ( who had a rather fiery character ) extensively registrated in the news papers.

The sound quality of the Charles Mingus Sextet - Live in Oslo 1964 is not at his best ( I think the sound from the film has been used), but the music is great. You can hear it and see it on the two fragments I love to share with you: Take The A Train and So Long Eric, a tune title that refered to the announcement of Eric Dolphy some days earlier that he would stay in Europe. He died two month later in Berlin.

In 1964 begon het Charles Mingus Sextet aan een twee-en-een-halve week durende tournee door Europa. De serie optredens startte in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam op 10 oktober tijdens een nachtconcert en eindigde in Stuttgart op 28 april 1964. Gisteren heb ik het eerste deel van het concert in Oslo opgezet, een registratie van hun optreden van 12 april 1964 in de aula van de universiteit daar. De bezetting van het Charles Mingus Sextet was: Charles Mingus bas, Johnny Coles trompet, Eric Dolphy altsaxofoon, basklarinet en fluit, Clifford Jordan tenorsax, Jaki Byard piano en Dannie Richmond slagwerk. Dit sextet is één van Charles Mingus beste groepen gebleken. Op mijn CD: Charles Mingus Sextet - Live in Oslo (Distart LS2-913 ( volume 1)) staan twee lange nummers: Fables of Faubus en Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress. Een gelukkig toeval is, dat er een schitterende TV uitzending op band bewaard gebleven is, zodat we, behalve naar geluid ook naar beelden van dit concert kunnen kijken. Twee beeldfragmenten, die ik gevonden heb, bevatten delen van dit concert; uitgebracht in volume 2 van de Distart CD.

Deze Europese tournee van Charles Mingus zou uitgroeien tot een memorabele. De opnamen gemaakt tijdens deze serie concerten zijn overal verkrijgbaar: Concertgebouw -Amsterdam vol 1 en 2 ( Ulysse Musique), Live in Oslo ( Jazz Up en Disart), Astral Weeks ( Moon), The Great Concert of Charles Mingus ( Prestige 3LP set) en Mingus in Europe volume 1 and 2(Enja). Het werd een gedenkwaardige tournee met een heleboel problemen. Ten eerste kondigde Eric Dolphy aan dat hij niet mee terug zou gaan naar de VS en dus werd het een soort afscheidstournee en Johnny Coles stortte halverwege de serie concerten op het toneel in elkaar tengevolge van een maagprobleem en moest worden opgenomen in een ziekenhuis. Er waren miscommunicaties tussen Jaki Byard en Charles Mingus over een TV registratie in Luik ( België) van de RTB ( Franstalige Belgische TV-zender) en de optredens in Duitsland veroorzaakten allerlei wrijvingen. In Struttgart, tijdens één van de laatste concerten, werd Charles Mingus geconfronteerd met een woud aan microfoons en toen ze wilden gaan spelen stonden er tientallen fans met bandrecorders en filmcamera's klaar om het concert op te nemen als ware het zo'n gezellige Doctor Jazz Reunie middagconcert in Boskoop jaren geleden. ( Een aantal lezers zullen dit herkennen). Deze en andere problemen gaven Charles Mingus aanleiding genoeg om af en toe flink te keer te gaan; waarmee hij uitgebreid de kranten haalde. Charles Mingus stond bekend om zijn, zoals we dat nu vaak horen omschrijven, korte lontje.

De geluidskwaliteit van de opnamen van het Charles Mingus Sextet - Live in Oslo 1964 is niet altijd even goed ( ze komen m.i. direct van de beeldband af ); de muziek is fantastisch. Ik heb twee fragmenten geselecteerd: Take The A Train en So Long Eric, een nummer, dat refereert aan het aangekondigde vertrek van Eric Dolphy. Eric Dolphy overleed, overigens, twee maanden later in Berlijn tengevolge van zijn suikerziekte.

De eerstvolgende Doctor Jazz Reunie vindt plaats op zaterdag 20 oktober 2007 in het WICC-gebouw in Wageningen. Vergeet niet te komen !!
