't was fantastisch. (Hans Koert)

Ruud Jacobs, bass player andproducer for more then 55 years, was the Dutch represenative to be part of the International Youth Band that performe at the 1958 Newport Festival. Keep (it) Swinging. In several contributions, to be published next half year, this "adventure" of Ruud Jacobs wil be recollected .... Don't miss it. ... (Hans Koert)

He's in every piece of the place .... He's all over the place .... (Hans Koert)

Jazz on Film: Steve Wante (r) (photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Robert Veen ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

(Hans Koert)

Most of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker and Bill Evans early recordings have been reissued in cheap budget boxes, a grab bag for collectors, but stabbed the serious record companies to the heart ...... Limetree and Resonance recently released two excellent live albums by the Bill Evans Trio, recorded in the Top of the Gate in New York City (1968) and the Stadsschouwburg in Groningen ( The Netherlands) - both in an excellent sound quality. Two essentials! (Hans Koert)

In 1959 Oscar Alemán had schedulded a tour along Spain, Switzerland and Portugal, but after a few weeks and some disappointing concerts, the tour was cancelled. (Hans Koert)

(Hans Koert)

(photo  courtesy: Mike del Ferro)
Mike Del Ferro leads a busy life with concerts and work shops .. not only in his native country Holland, but all around the world; even in exotic and remote places, where they don't have a word for his kind of music ..... Like a 16th Century explorer, he visited and performed in almost 100 different countries where he loves to play and be inspired by local musicians. In a series of a dozen albums, to be released by Challenge Records, he loves to share these experiences ... This series is entitled The Journey and recently its first album was released - a preview ( or shall I say pre-ear)for the rest of the series: The Journey.  Keep an eye on this Dutch pianist .... (Hans Koert)

Woodwind instruments have been standard instruments in choro since the beginning. The flute was the lead melody instrument of the terno, the original (trio) choro ensemble consisting of flute, cavaquinho and guitar, while larger ensembles like the bands led by Anacleto de Medeiros also excelling in early choro were based on brass instruments. Pixinguinha started as a flutist, but already after his visit to Paris in 1922 with his Oito Batutas, he fell in love with the tenor saxophone, but was prevented from playing the instrument in public until much later, mainly because of national critics claiming the saxophone to spoil Brazilian music by Americanized jazzinfluence. A recently released cd by sax-player Flavio Sandoval, 'Vibrações Brasileiras' (Tratore, 2012), continues the focus on the saxophone as a lead voice in a repertoire of choro compositions. (Jørgen Larsen)

Bill Evans - The Radio Sesjun Shows

Jazz is not a "what", it is a "how" (Bill Evans)
Hans Koert

Bill Evans en de Sesjun radioprogramma's (Nederlands) Bill Evans - The Sesjun Radio Shows (English)

Jazz is not a what, it is a how. If it were a What, it would be static, never growing. The How is that the music comes from the moment, it is spontaneous, it exists at the time it is created. And anyone who makes music according to this method conveys to me an element that makes his music jazz (quote: Bill Evans) (source: billevans.nl)

Recently the third 2cd in the series The Sesjun Radio Shows has been released with piano player Bill Evans. Previous double-cds in this great series were radio programs with Chet Baker and Art Blakey, all to be heard during the 1970s and 1980s by the Dutch Tros Sesjun Radio Shows.
Bill Evans - The Sesjun Radio Shows ( PRCD2011005)
Bill Evans joined the Sesjun Radio shows three times and, as Cees Schrama, together with Dick De Winter, co-producer of the concerts, said that his playing was just gre
at. The first two concerts were scheduled at De Boerenhofstede in Laren the 13th of December, 1973 and the 13th of February 1975. Eddie Gomez on bass accompanied Bill at both concerts, and this duo was augmented into a trio during the February 1975 concert with Eliot Zigmund. Eddie Gomez was Evans bass player for twelve years and they can be heard for the first time together at a studio recording for the 1966 Verve album a Simple Matter of Conviction with Shelly Manne on drums. Eliot Zigmund, born in 1945 in The Bronx, played with Bill Evans since the mid 1970s and became a sought after accompanist in the New York jazz scene. He seems to be still active nowadays.
Bill Evans with his caracteristic stoop while performing. ( source: pianologist.com)
He replaced Scott LaFaro who was killed in a car crash. I specially liked the piano - bass duet in TTT ( Twelve Tone Tune) and TTTT ( Twelve tone Tune Two) in the second session; the lyrical Earl Zindars composition Sareen Jurer and the great ballad Blue Serge - all great compositions in the hands of the Bill Evans Trio.
Marc Johnson (1953) ( source: wommusic.com)
The third radio program for Sesjun was broadcasted at De Meerkoet in Lelystad, the new-founded city in the new polder Zuid-Flevoland in the IJsselmeer, in December 1979, a year before Bill Evans passed away. The trio of Bill Evans, which featured Bill Evans on piano, Marc Johnson at the bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums started with four great tracks; My Romance opens with a rather free Bill Evans intro at the piano, with changing tempos and whatsoever in a way only Bill Evans can do, until after 90 seconds the rhythm section sets the time. Both Nardis as Blue in Green remember Bill Evans participation in the Miles Davis band. Nardis fascinates me thanks to the fact that the three individual artists all three give each other a lot of space to show their music - solos by three equal talented individuals - in those days something less common then today.

Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez (source: baumgarten.nl)
Blue in Green, which was part of the famous Miles Davis Kind of Blue album, with Bill Evans as the piano player, opens with the harmonica of Toots Thielemans, who had just returned from a trip to Japan and who was a special guest during the second part of the concert. Toots and Bill knew each other well as they had made a record together in the last week of October the previous year. Toots also has fast reflexes when it comes to his instrument and his ability to react to anything what's going on around him, Cees Schrama is quote by Jeroen De Valk who wrote the liner notes.
Especially at the third session, the one from 1979, Bill Evans and his band members seem to be in incredible shape, Jeroen De Valk says.
Toots Thielemans (1922) (source: blog.seniorenweb.be)
Bill Evans once said to Bert Vuijsje, jazz journalist, that he didn't like to perform in public and that he preferred to play at home or in a studio at complete silence ( Bill Evans (in Jazzportretten)). This time he topped everything he did for us ...., Cees Schrama remembers: Everyone present, jazz buff or not, knew instinctively from the first few bars on: this is unbelievable. The has be to put on record. In 1979 Helen Keane, Bill's manager, wasn't interesting in releasing this concert, as a recording session had been scheduled for the next year ..... of course, no-one could foreseen Bill's sudden death eight months later.
This third double album is another great title in the series The Sesjun Radio shows, which has scheduled some more radio program featuring Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. Let's hope Cees Schrama and Beeld & Geluid ( Sound and Light) will soon release the 4th album, which features the Stan Getz programs.

Bill Evans is one of those legendary jazz piano players in post war jazz that influenced the scene. A lot of known and less known pianists like Michel Petrucciani and Enrico Pieranunzi were inspired by his music. Jazz is not a "what", it is a "how" seems to have been said by Bill Evans, a quote I found, which wants to express his meaning that Jazz music is made at the moment you play it - that improvisation is the most important element of Jazz. In de 1970s Bill performed three times at the Tros radio program entitled Sesjun and these concerts are now available on a great 2-cd album in the series The Sesjun Radio Shows.

Hans Koert

Bill Evans en de Sesjun radioprogramma's (Nederlands) Bill Evans - The Sesjun Radio Shows (English)

Jazz is not a what, it is a how. (= Jazz is niet een "wat", maar een "hoe" ). If it were a What, it would be static, never growing. The How is that the music comes from the moment, it is spontaneous, it exists at the time it is created. And anyone who makes music according to this method conveys to me an element that makes his music jazz.(= en iedereen die zo met muziek omgaat, maakt, volgens mij, zijn muziek tot jazz) (uitspraak: Bill Evans) (bron: billevans.nl)

Bill Evans - The Sesjun Radio Shows ( PRCD2011005)

Toots also has fast reflexes when it comes to his instrument and his ability to react to anything what's going on around him.

Toots Thielemans (1922) (bron: blog.seniorenweb.be)
( Bill Evans (in Jazzportretten - Bert Vuijsje).
Deze keer echter he topped everything he did for us .... (= overtrof hij zichzelf tijdens alle opnamen), herinnert Cees Schrama zich: Everyone present, jazz buff or not, knew instinctively from the first few bars on: this is unbelievable.(= Iedereen die er bij was, zowel de deskundigen als de leken op het gebied van de jazz, voelden na de eerste noten instinctief aan, dat er hier iets ongelooflijks gebeurde). This had be to put on record.

The Complete Tony Bennett - Bill Evans Recordings

Alle Tony Bennett en Bill Evans opnamen ( Nederlands) The Complete Tony Bennett - Bill Evans Recordings ( English)

All Tony Bennett - Bill Evans recordings

The Tony Bennett-Bill Evans Album and Together Again
THE COMPLETE TONY BENNETT and BILL EVANS RECORDINGS
Hans Koert

The Complete Tony Bennett - Bill Evans Recordings have been reissued recently as a double album on the Fantasy label ( FAN-31281). Today I love to put these sessions in the spotlight.
Tony Bennett, vocalist, labels himself as an entertainer. He was born as Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Queens, New York City August 1926. He is one of the greatest crooners from the XXth Century, on a same level as legends like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. His almost 60 years career in music has brought us a lot of great recordings, which were honoured with a dozen of Grammy Awards.

The fact that this crooner, singer, interpreter of the American Song Book, got a place in this blog, is because he made some great recordings with jazz musicians too. Like the ones I have in front of me: The Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Album from 1975 and, because of its successes, a year later the album Together Again (1976). The first album was released on Fantasy and the latter on Improvisation. Tony Bennett, although not a jazz vocalist himself, recorded with dozens of jazz musicians, with orchestras ( like Count Basie's), but also with single piano players like Bill Evans and Ralph Sharon. He recorded two albums with the latter: The 1959 Tony Sings for Two and When Light Are Low from 1964. The June 1975 Tony Bennett sessions are different, because during this session, Tony was accompanied by the great piano player Bill Evans. Well, no, let’s make it clear – Tony Bennett and Bill Evans made this record as two equal partners – not the crooner with piano accompaniment.
Bill Evans, the introvert piano player, became famous because of his great trio albums like Waltz for Debby or his (short) cooperation with Miles Davis, with tunes like Blue in Green; an own composition in the famous Miles Davis classic -Kind of Blue album. Bill Evans was born in Plainfield NJ August 1929 and passed away September 1980.

They first met at a private party at the White House, organized by John F. Kennedy in 1962.
When this session was scheduled, they planned to make a vocal album with two piano players: Bill Evans and John Bunch, but the latter skipped the appointment because he felt, that Bill was not in his league. The June 1975 sessions, which filled the first record, were the best of the two. They were recorded without any preparations or rehearsals. They agreed about the selections and recorded it. I heard these songs for the very first time in a reissue made by Jazz Collectors, released last year, titled Tony Bennett and Bill Evans – The Legendary Sessions. ( JC 426). Well, as regular visitors of my blog should know, I’m not a fan of vocalists, because I believe that singers often make their presence very much felt. I liked these sessions because of Bill Evans piano playing. This reissue contained two previous unreleased recordings: Who Can I Turn To and Dream Dancing and especially the first tune became one of Tony Bennett hits when he recorded in the mid 1960s. Listen to a ragment of this tune by Tony Bennett ( with another piano player and orchestra):

For the fans of the music of Tony Bennett and Bill Evans it was great to learn that unreleased songs, recorded during this session, had survived. The new reissue, I love to put into the spotlight today, has more surprises: twenty previous unreleased alternative takes.
Nowadays it seems to become a trend to reissue “The Complete ………. Sessions “ by the officially record companies, with crumbs that kept on the shelves untouched and unhearded; treasures for those who want to hear it all.

For the true connoisseurs this The Complete Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Recordings is a must – for the average jazz fan – the ones, who like to listen to Tony Bennett's singing in an informal setting, the other reissue will do well too.

The Tony Bennett-Bill Evans Album en Together Again
ALLE TONY BENNETT en BILL EVANS OPNAMEN
Hans Koert

( JC 426).

“The Complete ……….

Bossa Nova Stories
ELIANE ELIAS: Tribute to 50 Years of Bossa Nova
Hans Koert

Today I love to point you to a great new album by the US - Brazilian piano player and vocalist, the
always charming Eliane Elias. The album is titled Bossa Nova Stories and her latest one in a series of almost two dozens of great releases. At the bottom of this blog you'll find a list of records made by Eliane Elias during the past twenty-five years.

This album wants to be a tribute to the Bossa Nova - the music style born in 1958 with the tune Chega de Saudade ( also known by its English title No More Blues), recorded by Elizete Moreira Cardoso, the famous Brazilian singer and actress discovered in the 1930s by
Jacob do Bandolim. Bossa Nova means in Portuguese, in fact, "new trends". In 1958 she was invited to sing on an album titled Canção do Amor Demais, with Bossa Nova compositions made by Vinícius De Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim, with João Gilberto at the guitar. It is a fact that the tune Chega de Saudade ( No More Blues) was already recorded for Victor by the Kentucky Jazz Babies ( 1929) and a few years later by Eddie South, but, okay, both Jobim as De Moraes gave it that Bossa Nova groove, a mixture of the Brazilian ( Samba) and the US (Jazz) music cultures. This style of music became extremely popular for a dozen years and then it was passed by new hypes; the Bossa Nova tunes, however, became standards in the jazz repertoire.
Eliane Elias was born in Sao Paolo (Brasil) around that same period (Yes she is !!) and grew up in a musical family with her mother being a classical piano player. Her mother loved to play the jazz- and Brazilian music too. When Eliane was a young girl she was already fascinated by the jazz and she admired especially the music of Bill Evans. She learned to play the piano and worked with big bands before she moved to New York in the early 1980s, where she maried Randy Brecker ( their daughter Amanda recently made her debute album Here I Am) and recorded for his band Steps Ahead. Up to now she made a lot of recordings and I heard her singing for the very first time on the soundtrack of the film Calle 54. On that great film, a tribute to the Latin American music, she sings Samba Triste ( a Baden Powell composition) with her trio, featuring Marc Johnson and Satoshi Takeishi. Love to share with you a fragment from that film Calle 54, featuring Eliane Elias singing Samba Triste.

I heard her for the very first time live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam last year; by accident, only a quarter of an hour I guess, to be honest, because her performance overrunned its time and I was in time to hear the great Ron Carter in concert. In those 15 minutes I learned what a great vocalist and piano player she is. At the Bol.com stand on the central square of Ahoy in Rotterdam she gave an interview that I love to share with you.

She tells about her fascinating for the music of Bill Evans. Her latest album titled Something For You and her concert in Rotterdam were dedicated to him. Her husband, she divorced Randy Brecker, Marc Johnson, bass player in her stage trio, was the last bass player in the Bill Evans Trio before he passed away September 1980. Thanks to a tape that Marc received from Bill Evans they decided to make a tribute to this great piano player, who, as I wrote at the beginning of this blog, was her first introduction to jazz. In August she will be, for a whole week, one of the guests at the Bill Evans 80th Birthday Tribute in the Iridium in New York City.
She also tells about her new project, a tribute to the Bossa Nova. This great record has been released some months ago and contains 14 well known Bossa Nova tunes, traditionals like Jobim's The Girl From Ipanema, Chega de Saudade of course and Desafinado and tunes like Marvelous For Words, The More I See You and Day By Day that have become standards in jazz. A special one is Superwoman, a Stevie Wonder composition with our own Toots Thielemans on his Muziekske, his harmonica. The tunes, no suprise, are all well known - some with a large orchestra, using strings, rather common for this kind of music and a quartet featuring Oscar Castro-Neves on the guitar, Marc Johnson on bass and Paulo Braga on drums.
I found a fragment of a concert, recorded some years ago, at the San Javier jazz festival in Spain with Eliane Elias at the piano, Gustavo Saiari on guitar, Marc Johnson on bass and Satoshi Takeisha on drums. Eliane Elias had released the album The Dreamer, dedicated to the music of A.C. Jobim. The tunes are Ipanema and Doralice.

This lovely vocalist has fascinated me with her latest recording and made me anxious to hear more of her, like the Bill Evans tribute Something For You. Love to finish with a short interview with Eliane on the Bloomberg channel. Hope you like it

I grew up in Sao Paulo in the 1960s, hearing the Bossa Nova which was all around us. It was the popular music of our day, with its infectious rhythm and poetic lyrics. It was romantic, cool, jazzy, sensious. I lived and reather this music. It's in my DNA. (Eliane Elias)
