The Complete Tony Bennett - Bill Evans Recordings have been reissued recently as a double album on the Fantasy label ( FAN-31281). Today I love to put these sessions in the spotlight.
Tony Bennett, vocalist, labels himself as an entertainer. He was born as Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Queens, New York City August 1926. He is one of the greatest crooners from the XXth Century, on a same level as legends like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. His almost 60 years career in music has brought us a lot of great recordings, which were honoured with a dozen of Grammy Awards.

The fact that this crooner, singer, interpreter of the American Song Book, got a place in this blog, is because he made some great recordings with jazz musicians too. Like the ones I have in front of me: The Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Album from 1975 and, because of its successes, a year later the album Together Again (1976). The first album was released on Fantasy and the latter on Improvisation. Tony Bennett, although not a jazz vocalist himself, recorded with dozens of jazz musicians, with orchestras ( like Count Basie's), but also with single piano players like Bill Evans and Ralph Sharon. He recorded two albums with the latter: The 1959 Tony Sings for Two and When Light Are Low from 1964. The June 1975 Tony Bennett sessions are different, because during this session, Tony was accompanied by the great piano player Bill Evans. Well, no, let’s make it clear – Tony Bennett and Bill Evans made this record as two equal partners – not the crooner with piano accompaniment.

Bill Evans, the introvert piano player, became famous because of his great trio albums like Waltz for Debby or his (short) cooperation with Miles Davis, with tunes like Blue in Green; an own composition in the famous Miles Davis classic -Kind of Blue album. Bill Evans was born in Plainfield NJ August 1929 and passed away September 1980.

They first met at a private party at the White House, organized by John F. Kennedy in 1962.
When this session was scheduled, they planned to make a vocal album with two piano players: Bill Evans and John Bunch, but the latter skipped the appointment because he felt, that Bill was not in his league. The June 1975 sessions, which filled the first record, were the best of the two. They were recorded without any preparations or rehearsals. They agreed about the selections and recorded it. I heard these songs for the very first time in a reissue made by Jazz Collectors, released last year, titled Tony Bennett and Bill Evans – The Legendary Sessions. ( JC 426). Well, as regular visitors of my blog should know, I’m not a fan of vocalists, because I believe that singers often make their presence very much felt. I liked these sessions because of Bill Evans piano playing. This reissue contained two previous unreleased recordings: Who Can I Turn To and Dream Dancing and especially the first tune became one of Tony Bennett hits when he recorded in the mid 1960s. For the fans of the music of Tony Bennett and Bill Evans it was great to learn that unreleased songs, recorded during this session, had survived. The new reissue, I love to put into the spotlight today, has more surprises: twenty previous unreleased alternative takes.

Nowadays it seems to become a trend to reissue “The Complete ………. Sessions “ by the officially record companies, with crumbs that kept on the shelves untouched and unhearded; treasures for those who want to hear it all.

For the true connoisseurs this The Complete Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Recordings is a must – for the average jazz fan – the ones, who like to listen to Tony Bennett's singing in an informal setting, the other reissue will do well too.

The Complete Tony Bennett - Bill Evans Recordings zijn onlangs op een Fantasy dubbelalbum heruitgebracht ( FAN-31281). Vandaag wil ik dit album in de schijnwerper plaatsen.

Tony Bennett, zanger, omschrijft zichzelf als entertainer. Hij werd geboren in Queens, New York City als Anthony Dominick Benedetto in augustus 1926. Hij is één van de grootste crooners van de vorige eeuw; te vergelijken met zangers als Bing Crosby en Frank Sinatra. Hij zit al bijna 60 jaar in het vak en maakte honderden schitterende opnamen, die met een tiental Grammy’s geëerd werden.

Waarom deze crooner, bij uitstek vertolker van het American Songbook, een plaats in deze blog krijgt, is, omdat hij ook een flink aantal opnamen maakte met jazzmusici, zoals met Bill Evans in een opname sessie uit 1975 voor The Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Album, dat een groot succes werd en haar opvolger Together Again van een jaar later. Het eerst genoemde album werd uitgebracht op Fantasy en het tweede op Improvisation. Tony Bennett nam, hoewel zelf geen jazzmuzikant, tientallen nummers op met jazzmusici; met bands ( zoals dat van Count Basie) en met alleen pianobegeleiding, zoals met Bill Evans of met zijn vaste begeleider Ralph Sharon. Met laatst genoemde nam hij twee platen op; te weten: Tony Sings for Two uit 1959 en When Light Are Low van vijf jaar later. De sessies van Tony Bennett uit juni 1975 zijn van een geheel ander kaliber, omdat Tony hier begeleid werd door niemand minder dan pianist Bill Evans. Nee, ik zeg het eigenlijk niet goed: Tony Bennett en Bill Evans traden hier aan als twee gelijkwaardige partners. – geen zanger begeleid door een pianist dus.

Bill Evans, de in zichzelf gekeerde pianist, die liever alleen in zijn studeerkamer speelde dan op een groot podium (zoals hij zelf eens zei tegen Bert Vuijsje) werd vooral bekend om de opnamen met zijn beroemde trio, zoals Waltz for Debby en vanwege zijn korte verblijf bij Miles Davis. Luister maar eens naar zijn spel in zijn eigen compositie Blue in Green op de Miles Davis' jazzklassieker Kind of Blue. Hij werd geboren in Plainfield NJ in augustus 1929 en overleed september 1980.

Ze ontmoetten elkaar voor het eerst in 1962 op het Witte Huis tijdens een informeel partijtje georganiseerd door John F. Kennedy.

Toen deze opnamen gepland waren, was er nog sprake van Tony Bennett, die begeleid zou worden door twee pianisten: Bill Evans en John Bunch, maar laatstgenoemde trok zich voor de opnamen terug toen hij hoorde wie de andere pianist was – daar kon hij niet aan tippen. De opnamen van juni 1975 werden zonder voorbereiding of repetitie gemaakt – er werd alleen even afgesproken welk nummers ze zouden spelen ( wel zo makkelijk, volgens mij).
Ik hoorde deze nummers voor het eerst op een heruitgave van Jazz Collectors, die afgelopen jaar verscheen, getiteld Tony Bennett and Bill Evans – The Legendary Sessions. ( JC 426). Als je deze blog regelmatig bezoekt, weet je dat ik meer van instrumentale muziek hou, dan van zangers en zangeressen, omdat die, naar mijn bescheiden mening, vaak te veel extra aandacht naar zich toe trekken. Dat geldt ook voor deze dubbel CD, die ik dan ook het meest waardeer door het pianowerk van Bill Evans. Deze heruitgave bevat twee nooit eerder uitgebrachte nummers: Who Can I Turn To en Dream Dancing en vooral het eerste nummer werd een hit door Tony Bennett, die het midden jaren zestig uitbracht. Luister naar een uitvoering van hem ( niet met Bill Evans maar met een andere pianist en orkest).

Voor de kenner onder ons en fans van de stem van Tony Bennett of het pianospel van Bill Evans is het natuurlijk prachtig als blijkt dat er toendertijd twee nummers op de plank zijn blijven liggen. De heruitgave op Fantasy, die vandaag in de belangstelling staat, biedt heel wat meer onuitgebrachte takes en nummers ……….

Het is tegenwoordig een trend om heruitgaven iets extra's meet te geven, waardoor het voor verzamelaars aantrekkelijk wordt om “oude” heruitgaven te vervangen. “The Complete ………. Sessions “ wordt dan zo’n heruitgave meestal genoemd.

Voor de echte kenners is dit smullen geblazen, omdat er op deze alternatieven vaak iets “losser” gspeeld wordt; wel eens een foutje gemaakt wordt, een blue note noemen ze dat dan in de jazz; of een couplet wordt gewoon helemaal vergeten; voor de echte liefhebbers is deze dubbelaar, The Complete Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Recordings een must – voor de gewone luisteraar, het soort dat muziek draait als muzak, als achtergrondmuziek, kan de “reguliere” heruitgave volstaan.
